so basically, i spent the evening soaking wet, freezing, and kneeling in cow crap.

And I am the worst fencer ever. The guy with whom I was sparring completely killed me. Many times over.
The gifted teacher is trying to get us to prepare for the Scholastic Scrimmage. We watched the tape from last year. I knew the answers to over half of the questions, which was bueno. And I tried so hard not to laugh when the people introduced themselves. Because two of them were in the same room. But one sounded completely asleep and the other used the word “jammin'” in relation to a guitar. Which is always pathetically hillarious.
And I will actually work now. I’ve been getting more studious. Which is so totally weird.

My huge social studies assignment(which I got back today, the best one my teacher has read so far, a 99%) kept me from museblogging for over two weeks, but I’ll try to be on more. Museblog is good for my sanity; earlier this week, I was typing on an imaginary keyboard a ranting post about my lack of time. I’m completely out of touch and I still don’t have time to post that often. Apologies if I don’t read all the posts.

Band concert tonight! w00t! Then tomorrow night the jazz band gets to see the chuck mangione concert free (w00t! i love jazz band…) and meet everybody afterwards and fun stuff like that. Then the next morning we get to go to the radio station and play on the radio!!! Everybody-101.1, i think it’s around 7 or 7:30? I’ll find out so y’all can stalk our fight song. Or something. Not sure what exactly we’re playing. But it’s gonna be good. XD Then middle skool play on saturday night, and soccer game sunday. Homework? Yeah right. Speaking of which, i have a whole chapter of history notes to due. The ones that were due today. And i totally failed the binder thing in latin. Why? I didn’t have dividers. Somebody shall die. Haven’t figured out who yet. Oh, and i might have mentioned how andy wiped all my games again? well i finally managed to steal his and get them all back, plus another app that has puzzley type things. One of them is called block dude and is now my life. It’s really easy once you figure it out, but it’s still my life. XD I decorated my hand today. It was pwettyful. little triangles. And a red smiley face in the middle, because i only got one q wrong on the chapt. 11 quiz in history. Which is good, because i need all the points i can get. I just found out that the point sheet was worth 10 pts. Who grades how you record your points? Honestly, isn’t that what centerpoint’s for? I hate these lame, end-of-semester trivial point grubbing things. Mostly because i rarely do them.

All chocolate! I meant to write yesterday, but my dad set it so my internet goes off at 10:30 because I would stay up all night playing games on the internet. The washington team is the “Redskins”, and I’ve always wondered why our nations capital doesn’t have a more politically correct football team.

40- I’ve skipped 2 grades in math (a lot of people at my school skip 1 grade in math, but there are only 3 people in my grade who have skipped 2 grades in math). I could have skipped 3 grades in math, but then I never would have had one of the best teachers at my school, and my school didn’t want to let me because of “social issues”. I haven’t skipped a grade in all the subjects though.

Nah, they don’t let people skip grades here, most just take advanced classes. I only know of 2 people who’ve skipped, my friend lydia and some other kid in 2nd grade.

Why should we be so careful about “politically correct”? People are offended by things, such as native american mascots, which come from a different era, or are not meant to offend. If people don’t reveal their inner bigots when they say “politically incorrect” things, then they still have inner bigots. I think that people should try to understand where that kind of stuff comes from instead of asking everyone to step really lightly around their feelings.

Wow. I don’t have a life anymore. Literally, this whole week I have only had two hours of spare time, most of which I spent sleeping or reading. I’m actually posting this roughly ten minutes before I have to leave for school.
BUT THE MATISYAHU CONCERT WAS AWESOME!

And I have pictures of the man himself, because I was situated only about 5 feet away from the stage!
However, he came 2 hours late. Which wouldn’t have been so bad, if not for the facts that (a) they were playing really bad music the entire time he failed to show up (b) it was a full house and (c) it was a standing concert.

Never skipped a grade, but i started preskool a year early. Sort of. It’s rather confuzzling. All because i’m born in october. Sheesheroonies.
Chuck mangione concert tonight! matt, leo and cheese are going (w00t jazz band!), but i don’t think anybody i know from regular band is…
speaking of leo, oh man. Some kid was taking videos of him during study hall, so leo asked him to stop, and the kid starts choking him! so leo grabbed his head and banged it against his knee, and apparently he got cut. So then leo was sent to the office, but he didn’t get in trouble (whew) because it was in self-defense. So anyway, that was the topic of skool today.
Oh and hunter brought a frisbee, so we played frisbee during lunch. twas fun. andy’s really good at it! that’s surprises me. it was kind of windy though, so it went all over. XD
Leeny got her braces off. she’s had them on for ages…i think she said since like 6th grade or something? anyway, i gave her gum.
I had so much choklit today…i had half a hershey bar at midnight last night (which counts, so deal with it ) and then two packs of m+m’s this morning (these career ppl came in to talk to us about tech skool or whatev and they gave out m+m’s. I was like asleep, so then she asked “who knows anything about this skool? I’ll give you m+m’s” and i was mad b/c i didn’t know anything about the place, i mean i’d only just moved last year! but i wanted m+m’s! Correction: I needed m+m’s! So everybody else was like “yeah, i knew a chef, yeah, my friend’s brother went there, blahblah” and i was like “I know absolutely nothing, but i’d like some m+m’s” So everybody laughed and she said something about how good of me it was to admit it and gave me m+m’s. I’m usually not smart-aleck like that but i didn’t care, i was SOOOO happy to have choklit!!! Anyway…this is all in parentheses, isn’t it? yeah, i was going through the choklit i had. ok) and i had reese’s after skool. And i owe ellison a dollar. He actually talks now! it’s incredible. Even though i still can’t hear half of what he says cuz he’s so quiet.
Math was SO boring today! We have a sub, and something about her voice just puts everybody to sleep. Calks were popping up all over and i had to give lucy games again because she accidentally deleted them. Speaking of which, if i haven’t mentioned, andy finally gave back my cord! w00t! Oh and he’s done a randnum binary version. it’s pretty sveet.
I have to colour a map, do a chapter of notes (yeah, the one due wednesday ) write a story for journalism, do a page of math, and finish a chart for science. Oh and study for the vocab test which i’m taking friday at lunch because i’m going to be on the RADIO!!!! wheee! Schneids said we should just sleep on the bus since we’re going to be at the concert tonight really late and then the radio thing’s at like 6:15 the next morning.
I showed doc the article on schliemann cuz he had just got done teaching that to us and he threw his arms up very dramatically and was like “SEE?! HE’S FAMOUS!” and i was like “wow…”

SQUEE!!!!! My Chem average is a 95.58, which will round up to a wonderfully even 96. Huzzah! It’ll make up for my dismal Calc average.
But at least asking the teacher to keep the kids quiet resulted in silence! [during the quiz] Maybe I did okay?

I love my aerobics teacher. Even though she scares me. We’re all stressed out because quarter exams are coming up, and so she lets us do yoga. My new favorite sport. Soooo relaxing. Even on the grody mats. Which should really be labled as a biohazard. Two girls fell asleep, one was snoring, the other didn’t get up when we were finished, it was very funny. Now I am very relaxed. Zen. 5 more minutes, then I’ll stress out on homework. Now, I am enjoying being calm for the first time in weeks.

I really dislike the idea of pushing kids ahead a grade, but then I also really don’t like gifted programs in elementary schools. The idea that some kids are ‘gifted’ or ‘smart’ enough to be moved ahead just sounds really, really pretentious to me. If a kid is having an easy time in school and is obviously bored, give them harder assignments. Let them work at their own pace. Skipping grades is less about the academic level, I think, and more about the social aspect. If a kid skips a grade he/she will miss out on all the social lessons of that grade. Even if he/she is smart enough, they (probably) won’t be ready emotionally or socially to skip the grade and end up with the bigger kids. All of the kids who’ve been moved ahead who I’ve met seem like they needed that extra year in grade-school or what have you. They seem like they’re constantly reminded of how much younger they are than everyone else and have to overact to make up for it. So, yeah, pushing kids ahead is a v. bad idea, unless their birthday is a conflict. Even then, keeping them back seems like a good idea to me. An extra year of preschool never hurt anyone.
Keep in mind, this is my perspective coming from a Montessori environment, where EVERYONE worked at their own speed, so it was really not practical to move a kid up. We had three or two grade levels per class, as well, which also factors into my opinion.

78 — i toooootally agree. i have a friend who skipped kindergarten and she is really annoying and always announcing to the world whne she gets good grades or whatever. my mom told me its because she feels like she has to make up for being younger than everyone else. i think thats right because my friend is kind of immature. of course, my other friends who never skipped are also immature, so i dunno. but i dont think skipping is a good idea.

Zallie- I went to a very good preschool when I was 3, so when I moved at age 4, the new preschool decided to move me up to kindergarten because I was ahead of the rest of the kids my age. When I transferred to public school for first grade, they saw my age and said I had to take kindergarten AGAIN. This year was boring and I’m not very social, so I didn’t talk much. This lead the teacher(whom everyone, including adults, who have met her agree she was not ment to teach kindergarten, everyone hated her) to believe I was dumb when in reality I was just really bored. Plus, I didn’t know how to read yet, so they put me in all the lowest classes for first grade. Within half a year, I could read better than most kids in the highest class, and I was always pretty good at math, just shy. They moved me up one reading level, but I am still angry that I was held back when I really didn’t need to be. Granted, I would never have had the friends I have now, but nonetheless I think if a child is accademically capable of doing the work, he/she should be moved up a grade if they and their parents want it. I consider myself to be very mature for my age, always understanding much more than my peers. I had no real friends at school until I went into a gifted program for 4th and 5th grades. I know it sounds bad, separating the the “brighter” children, aka those who score better on standardized tests, but I was finally put with kids whom I could relate to. I met almost all of my best friends in that gifted program. I don’t regret it for a minute. Since then, I’ve kept in touch with almost all my friends, even though we’re all in high school now. Plus, we got great experiances, including a science fair, model UN, and performing a shakespereian play. I remember going to my best friend Molly’s 5th grade play, the wizard of oz, in which she played a munchkin, and the next night she came to see Love’s Labour’s Lost, where I played lady-in-waiting Maria to my friend Kate’s princess. And unlike the Wizard of Oz, where they had two kids play the same part so everyone could participate, those who weren’t actors got to do other things, like lighting, stage crew, my friend nicole was the stage manager, claire did costumes, set designers, and we had two different shows with different casts and tech so we would all have something we alone could do. Those differences really matter, and I think it really shaped who I am. Sorry for the long post, but I just felt I had to say it. Before you go talking about how kid’s shouldn’t be put with other kids under a lable, like in a gifted program, you have to realize that most of these kids never fit social groups at their old schools, and are finally accepted by people who understand them, whom they never would have even met, had it not been for the gifted program. Sorry, lots of memories. Happy events, but I’m sad. I don’t want to go back to highschool.

83 – i don’t have a problem with giving kids harder work or allowing them to take more difficult classes, but seperating the kids into gifted and ‘regular’ seems to me like it’s just asking for rivalry, not to mention the fact that the gifted kids tend to think a lot of themselves because of they are always identified as ‘the bright ones.’ Especially if both programs are in one building, that just seems to be asking for rivalry. I mean, ask yourself this: if you were a ‘regular’ kid in school and they moved your best-friend up to the ‘gifted’ program, how would you feel? Probably not great, right?
After middle-school, I have less of a problem with kids being in academically accelerated programs, especially if the kids are able to chose for themselves whether or not they want to attend a more accelerated highschool. People want to follow all different career paths, so I think giving them the choice to pick their path in highschool makes all the sense in the world.
So basically, my point is this: if a kid is not challenged enough in grade-school give him/her harder work and encourage him/her to participate in outside classes. Do whatever it takes, but don’t classify the kids into ‘smart’ and ‘not smart’ because, really, that’s kind of manipulative.
Did you consider that the problems you encountered in kindergarten/1st grade were related to the school you attended and not the fact that you were too clever? You yourself mentioned that you had a bad teacher. That might be a big part of it.

After I become fluent in French I’m going to start Arabic. I’m giving myself two years to learn French, so I can leave two for Arabic before I graduate. I need to know Arabic because I’m going to be a translator for the IDF and although I’m pretty much fluent in Hebrew, nowadays it pays to know Arabic as well.
Two of my friends speak Spanish fluently. One of the two also speaks Hebrew and English fluently. She’s kinda scary. But yeah…so if anyone is familiar with the song “El Condor Pasa (If I Could)” by Simon and Garfunkel, I wanted to know if el condor pasa really meant “If I could”. So I asked the other friend, Dafna, who is from South America and doesn’t speak English fluently but manages pretty well, what “el condor pasa” means. And she said it means “the car passes” and you yell it at drivers who pass on the right. I thought that was pretty funny.

83-meh. how do you remember this? i agree w/ zallie on this 1. but what about being in a class w/ stupid people? my solution is: go to a more academically accelerated skool. but i can see how that isnt possible in most (if not all exept NYC) parts of the country. o vells. each case would be considered, so if they had freinds, they wouldnt be moved up. or, they could be moved upp very early, before they had freinds. allthough i can see how it would be difficult to see who was gifted or not at that age.

86- That is what our grade school gifted class was, though. For Reading(3rd and 4th grade), we’d go into anothe rlittle room and have a class with about 6 people. It was called PATS, not gifted, and no one really knew what it ment(I still can’t remember what it stands for). For math, we only met twice a week and would sit in the corner working on harder packets. We would still talk and participate with the others in class and stuff, but we wern’t really ahead of everyone, we just had a different learning style. More discussion and less teaching. We were mainly there because we could understand what to do faster, so we would spend less time on learning each unit and go into a bit more detial, such as why you do things instead of just how to do them. Anyway, my point’s done now. Bye.

40/78/80/83/86/88- I’m born right before the cutoff date for going into the next lowest grade, but I’m in the higher grade of the two near me, and I skipped a grade in math (taking math 2H) and I’m taking regents earth science in 8th grade, but I’ve never skipped a complete grade, although I come as close to doing it without actually as you can get. I was never challenged in the least until middle school and honors classes. If you can handle it and you want to, by all means skip a grade. There’s this one guy I know who thinks I’m the smartest person in the middle school and should skip to 9th, but then I’d miss all my friends, some of who are a grade below me, some in my grade, so I won’t. And I hate in elementary school when they think misbehaving people are bored and smart and try to put all the “smart” kids in one class because I’m always in the class full of misbehaving kids. Only having all the smart kids in one class kind of happened by accident this year because there’s only one configuration of classes for people in regents earth science who have to have health/tech 8th period and leave early to go to the high school for math. We’re all smart and nice and have known each other for years, though, so it’s OK. And I hate when schools try to put people in classes with different people each year to try to make friends because it can separate friends, but 4th and 5th I had the same students in the class and they formed cliques and it was ugly only I had my friends with me and friends in the class below still. So I’m ambivalent. And I had one teacher preschool-3rd, a 4th and 5th grade class where the 4th and 5th classrooms were connected and you could take 4th, 5th, or 6th(5th graders only)level classes, changing classes each subject 6th-now. I go to an average (I think)public school. Those are all my school-related opinions for now.

I was in a “gifted” after school my school invited some kids to in 4th and 5th. It was called MORE(more opportunities for a (something, I forget) education). At least 3 people who were in MORE(me and two others) are in grade-ahead math, and at least 5 that I can think of are in regents earth science, but science is much more common than math(60ish people in science vs. 14 in math) and science is held at the middle school and practically expected.

I just got back from the fall choir concert. OMG we got a standing ovation!! The first standing ovation of the year! And *snort* I actually thought this was a bit funny, b/c every time we practiced, all of us agreed that we sounded horrible! The highlight of the concert was when Men of Note did this thingie from Monty Python (Holy Grail) – They entered from the back (We were in a church), wearing robes. They were doing a Gregorian chant, and hitting themselves on the head w/ folders. I nearly died laughing.

From the perspective of a gifted student who has been suffering for many years from extreme lack of intilectual stimulation, I think that the “categorization” of students brings more benefits than problems. I have heard several arguments for keeping gifted kids in general ed classes, such as that they can help those less smart than them and that seperating out smart kids reduces the self esteem of those left behind. When gifted kids are bored, they start causing problems. Some push the teacher for more information on a given topic. Others read under the table (me). Others cause trouble for entertainment. Nobody wants to explain trivial things over and over again to students who will probably never understand them and don’t care anyway. Most people (including myself) in my experience are aware of the fact that there are other people who are more inteligent than them, and will have to learn to cope eventually. Lying to them will do no good. Julieb is incredibly lucky to have a gifted program which sponsors activities like he or she (which?) describes. The gifted program at my school does very little, figuring that students needing extra challenge will enroll in advanced classes. Even advanced classes have done very little for me. They are usually full of people who are not interested, but whose parents expect them to take said classes. The teachers tend to accelerate rather than to go into more depth in interesting topics. I see what you mean about segregation probably being a bad thing, but school is not the only venue for friendship, and classes are not the only place in school where socialization takes place. I am extremely sorry for this rant. It belongs on the complaints thread. I also apologize if I sound conceited and like I am better than everyone else.

the concert was pretty incredible. The guitar player was amazing!!! and the trumpet was so good! and the flugelhorn of course! w00t w00t! Pwn4g3!
So we sat in the balcony, front row. Free. Yay for free stuff! Anyway, the balcony at the southern’s kind of freaky. You go up the steps inside, and then to get to the front row you go back down more steps which are incredibly steep, and you walk along a really narrow space next to an extremely low railing. Hardly any leg room either, but we couldn’t really complain cuz hewitt’s legs are five times longer than everybody else’s. First half was just the columbus jazz orchestra. At intermission, we all went out and stood in a circle and talked about freaky teachers. Like pretty much the whole science and history depts and brendell. Then carolynn asked if i would go get skittles from the concessions with her, and i said i didn’t have any money, and she’s like “i’ll buy you skittles if you come with me” so i said “yes omg you rock!” So i got more sugar. Second half chuck mangione came on and played lotsa fun stuff, the only two i recognized being Children of Sanchez and Feels So Good. Then we got to meet everybody! chuck mangione shook hands with everybody and asked their name+instrument. He calls the trumpets “honkers”. Then the trumpet guy, byron stripling, gave an inspirational speech about sticking with it and stuff. We also got to say hi to the guitar player (who did i mention was incredible?) and the drummer and the piano player (who was also incredible) Carrie took some pics for the torch, then we all left. Now we get to go on the radio in 8 hrs, w00t. busy busy. I have so much hw left too. So much for sleep.

Re: gifted – Aah, but how do you decided who’s intelligent and who’s just a regular kid? Especially so young, I think classifying kids into ‘smart’ and ‘not-smart’ is ridiculous. What if a kid is an amazing writer and reader, but is still having trouble with math facts, is that reason to keep them in the ‘stupid’ room? In many cases, probably yes.
Also, standardized tests are often used to admit kids into gifted programs, which just irks me. Standardized tests measure nothing more than how good you are at taking tests. Decided whether kids are smart or not based on a test seems pretty stupid. Intelligence isn’t so easily defined as that.
So, I think in most schools, letting kids take advanced classes, while keeping them in the same grade is the best path. Let them learn faster, if that’s what they really want, but don’t segregate them into ‘intelligent’ and ‘not intelligent’ because, again, that’s manipulative.

96 and every other comment about it – I don’t have any experience with “gifted” programs, (my school doesn’t have one) but I thought they worked differently. I thought that if you were good at English but bad at math, you went to the gifted class for English but not for math. But I don’t know, and maybe it’s different depending on where you go. And yes, your last comment is what is probably right. But isn’t that basically what you do with gifted classes? It’s “intelligent” and “a different, faster type of intelligent,” too, I think…

I was at snack with my friends and pumpkin cream cheese was out. I had never tried cream cheese before, and thought it was probably terrible. My friends badgered me to try it. I took the tiniest bit of it on my spoon, held my cup up high in case i needed to wash away the taste, and…….I was in heaven! I liked it os much i kept trying to steal some from my friends. I had a huge fight with my friend today, but we made up right away. Behold!! I am back!!!! The skool trip would’ve been great, but it was freezing, raining, and freezing. On a scale of 1 to 10, probably a 7.

40- Meh… I almost skipped kindergarten (that counts as a grade), but my mom decided I shouldn’t ‘cuz I didn’t have many friends. As a matter of fact, I made most of my friends in kindergarten.
78- There’s two kids in my class who skipped a grade. In my skool, with kids they think could skip a grade, they move them up for a portion each day and test the waters. With me, I’m not doing that, but I get my own spelling, my own science and social studies. I’m also in High Math with the strict-o Mrs. Margolis. Not saying she’s mean, actually she’s quite nice sometimes.

Just put up halloween decorations while putting off doing review for math exam on monday. Going to town parade tomorrow with best friend who makes a gold fish look like it has a superb attention span. And I’m the one with ADD. Very fun. Boy/Girl scout troops, people in really old cars throwing candy, fire trucks, tee shirts(and occasionally popovers) thrown from tops of trucks, tiny fair rides for little kids, free cider, insurance lectures. It’s tradition, and I can’t wait!

I like mulled cider. It tastes so good! i have had my guinea pigs for a year and a day. Their names are Wolverine and nutmeg and they are both girls but we pretend wolfy is a boy and they eat a lot oand they really like hay and cat grass and they eat the seeds of cucumber but not the outside and wolfy needs his toenails clipped but everyone in my family hates clipping his toenailsand nutmeg had a baby but she died and that was a long sentence! We’re discussing that right now over on Stupid Senseless Smiley Stories. The short answer is that you shouldn’t do it, because the blog software uses green to indicate links. Pirates pwn vikings and ninjas
I slept for 12 hours last night. Sooo goood…i was seriously sleep deprived. My right eye hurts from rubbing it so much over the past couple days.
We lost the football game. :'( No playoffs for us. Idk what happened, we just played terribly. It was raining really hard. We didn’t even wear uniforms, just jeans and parkas. Everybody took their glasses off for the first half, because believe it or not we could actually see better without them. (as in-without them i could see danny a row ahead of me only slightly blurred. with them, i could just make out the blurry outline of my hand. Yep, no-glasses wins)
Oh and this should probably go in complaints, but i’ve been really annoyed at sarah lately. i don’t know if she’s getting more self-centered or if it was just my lack of sleep or whatever but it seems to me she’s been really shoving people out and trying to get into the middle of everything lately. she always needs to put the attention on herself. But i’m not really mad at her, mostly because i utterly fail at being mad at people.
I have to go, middle skool play, w00t! we’re gonna sit in the balcony. Good ol’ guys and dolls flashbacks. Jacob and i are totally ushering balcony for titanic this year again. XD

Yay! VERY HYPER AND PROCRASTINATING! BUZZED OUT ON CANDY THROWN BY 8 YEAR OLDS IN UNIFORMS! YAY! Feeling very old. Apparently, some of the little scouts didn’t realize we’re ONLY 14, and didn’t throw us candy. My friend actually yelled “WE’RE NOT TO OLD FOR CANDY!” at the very shocked old people riding in cars built in the 20’s. We covered her in political stickers. Every one. I literally ran to the other side of the street during the middle of two “floats” (there aren’t really any floats, everyone just sort of marches or rides in cars) to grab a sticker for a candidate we hadn’t gotten yet. In the end, there was not a space left on her front and there was a bumper sticker on her back that said “Got Pilk?” 2 tee shirts, a boatload of junk(including a jar opener, frisbee, nailfile, and wet wipe) and lots of candy thrown later, we had pizza&burgers and went home. Now I’m depressed because I really do have tons of work to do. Oh well, thats what sunday’s are for.

Hi guys, I’m back, and I just skimmed through about 300 posts and thought of a bunch of responces, but I’d be here all night if I wrote them all down. I was only gone for 4 days.
Anyway, I went somewhere awesome that I can’t even describe so anyone could understand completely. It was the FFA national convention in Indianapolis, IN. It is the largest gathering of students in the nation and the largest gathering of anyone second to the democratic and repuglican conventions. There were about 50,000 FFA members there, just a tenth of all FFA members in the country. We heard Terry Bradshaw and Clark Kellogg speak and the national officers who acted comfortable giving 1/2 hour long speaches to 40,000-50,000 people without notes and they are only about 20 years old. Everyone was in official dress, consisting of a jacket with the person’s state and town. It was so cool to look around and see a group from Iowa there and some from Florida and Texas and Hawaii and Alaska and Puerto Rico and Oklahoma and Colorado… Every state was represented.
Is anyone here in FFA? y’all don’t seem the type from what I’ve read on the posts but I could be wrong. The name Future Farmers of America usually turns people off, but FFA is more about learning leadership skills and public speaking and exploring careers and getting teenagers motivted to get up and do things that they want to know more about.
Unfortunately, now i have a week’s worth of homework to do tonight and tomorrow to be ready on Monday and I just noticed that I forgot my math book which I need… and I got no sleep on the bus last night so I am in a complaining mood *goes off to do some more complaining where I don’t annoy the other MBers*

As you know, I just moved to Canadia and I go to a girls’ school, so the only boys I know are my friends’ brothers, and they don’t count. I am reading John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, and it is one of the worst books ever written. Kino drinks pulque for breakfast. I don’t know if you’ve ever had pulque, but it’s a thick alcoholic drink made from fermented agave leaves. Disgusting. And really, really, potent. I am surprised he is able to walk, let alone crush scorpions and dive for pearls. Also, Kino and Juana don’t talk to each other AT ALL. Which is weird. And Steinbeck obviously hates all physicians EVER. Oh, and somebody should have told him that La Paz is on the Gulf of California, NOT the Gulf of Mexico. [Bastard.]

Have you ever heard the story of the man who tried to get himself classified as a planet back when the only requirements were that it was a large piece of matter orbiting a celestial body?
Well, the guy was fat, and he orbited the sun, so why not? I thought it was really funny at the time. Thinking about it, I’m glad that they didn’t decide to make all those other rocks planets, otherwise how would the sixth graders remember them? But now, somebody’s going to have to think of a new pnuemonic device! My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas doesn’t work anymore, and My Very Excellent Mother Just served Us Nine isn’t as catchy. What could replace Nine? I call for suggestions.

(225) Queenie J, I feel your pain. We not only had to read The Pearl, we had to act it out in class (which unintentionally rendered it a comedy). As far as I was concerned, the book’s only virtue was its brevity in comparison to other Steinbeck novels. Which was still no excuse for making students read it. I spent much of my time in English designing my own ideal curriculum. What we had in place clearly was intended to make people despise literature.

In my personal opinion, the only thing that would make The Pearl even partly readable would be the introduction of SCUDs at word 1, line 1, page 1 and consequently the obliteration of the rest of the book. Figuring out the Biblical allusions is killing me. Ow, ow, ow. Actually, a readers’ theater with the book would be fun.

I think that JK Rowling is going to kill off Harry. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I have a friend who identifies the Golden Trio as Hermione, Idiot #1, and Idiot #2. It’s fairly accurate.
I’ve read the original Mary-Sue litmus test. I now use it for all my writing, to make sure I have no Sues. I’ve never come out with anything past a borderline. If I got borderline, I scrapped the charecter–I only use non-Sues.

The only reason I can forgive my 8th grade english teacher for making us read the pearl is that he is Mr. O and he let us read animal farm(which I had read in 2nd grade) and explained the difference between “communism(utopian)” and “communism(china+russia)” I can not forgive 9th grade teacher though because she dislikes me and I can’t figure out why.

wow, haven’t been on here in a day, and there’s already nearly a hundred more comments!
yesterday, we went to cedar point which was really fun. we had a hard time convincing this one friend to go on this upside down ride called the corkscrew, but once she went on it, she thought it was really fun and we all went on it again. there was another upside down ride we went on, it was really fun too. we also went in this egyptian haunted house thing… it wasn’t that scary though.
yesterday i also had a horse show! i got 1st, 2nd 3rd and 6th place. yay for me!
now, i must go and do homework… *grumble grumble*

**The Choir Trip to MSU**
After being on the road for ten minutes, we stopped at a random convienience store to stock up on Bawls and Red Bull. Actually, I just got one little thingie of Bawls, b/c I usually can’t stand carbonated stuff – but the other three ppl I was with got like…maybe four energy drinks apiece…and drank them ALL within fifteen minutes…So there I was, just listening to musik, watching everyone else bounce off the walls…It was kinda funny.
The Marriott was def TEH PWNXOR!! It’s probably the fanciest hotel I’ve ever stayed at. OK, it had:
-Seven floors, as well as an underground parking lot
-Those glass elevators that go reely reely fast
-ESCALATORS!! Have you ever tried to talk w/ someone on one of those…when you’re going one way, and they’re going the other way? It’s fun.
-A winery (But they wouldn’t let us inside…)
-A spa
-A “roofie thing,” quoting my dear friend, who must have forgotten what a balcony was or something…XD
– (FREE!!) B&BW stuff – I tooke the orange/ginger aromatherapy lotion stuff…
-A pool, of course
-As well as the B&BW stuffins, our room also had a shoe mitt (gigglegiggle), sewing needles, mouthwash, Internet connection (But no compy, for some reason…), a coffeemaker, down pillows + comforters…Oh goode ness, it was soooo neat.
After checking out the room, I joined a bunch of random ppl for dinner – Man, there are like restaurants every two feet in Lansing, I swear. And of course, you know how indecisive we teenagers are…After we checked out a ton of restaurants, we settled on this one that had a ton of neon thingies on it…You know that thing about kids + shiny things…Yeah. LOL Jeesh, I don’t even remember what the place was called, but I had the best hummus I’ve ever tasted there.
After dinner, we met at a piano on the second floor to practice – The second floor had this big open square in the middle of it, where you could looke down and see the lobby. So we stood around it and sang…It was so fun. Unfortunately, the ppl working there were already kinda annoyed w/ us (…I can kind of see why…) – This waitress came out of the restaurant (Yeah, the place actually had a restaurant too) and said that the ppl inside were complaining. I mean, jeesh…We weren’t THAT bad…What’s wrong w/ a little musik while you eat?
Sometime later, I was back in the room…and my friend comes running in, yanks open the nightstand drawer, pulls out The Book of Mormon, and runs back out of the room – Then she went running down the hall, shoving the book in ppl’s faces and “healing their souls”…OMG it was absolutely hilarious.
We actually got to bed before midnight.
…But then we had to wake up at six. We came downstairs to breakfast, only to find that, for some reason, they had decided to not let us have the real food…so we had the continental. It wasn’t that bad…The only thing I didn’t like was that they didn’t have any coffee set out. I had to hunt around for a waitress and aske for it. When they came to the table w/ the coffee pot…It was so funny…The lady just plunks this coffee cup down in front of me, and fills it up…While standing like four feet away from the table!…Like I was a filthy street urchin or something – I thanked her, and she didn’t even acknowledge that I did…Oh well, I thought it was kinda funny.
We got to the Union at 8…and it turned out that we weren’t singing until 2:30! We were the second to last choir! And we couldn’t even leave the performance hall…Well actually, I did – to go to the bathroom – and this lady got angry w/ me. Honestly…
But we did very well…The judge guy seemed to really like us (The judges at these things seem to always be sort of cracked-out happy/enthusiastic, but he seemed esp hyped-up after we finished…LOL). Well…w00t for that then!

Guy: Well, if you happen to…wake up…soon, I’ll still be up there.
Me: Alrighty then. *Goes to hide out in room for awhile*
We had this conversation at least three times…I don’t hate him or anything; he’s just starting to creep me out a bit.

i am having an attack of lethargy.
these jerkasses on my bus were annoying me this afternoon. this one guy was like will you go out with my friend (who lives on my street) and i was like no and the friend was like hes the one who likes you not me and then they started arguing. it was really funny and a little flattering
im going trick or treating with my friend who ive never gone with before and she just moved into a new neighborhood but my other friend who i usually go with was expecting me to go with her and so she gave me this whole lecture about it, just randomly out the blue. i was like, hey, glad to see you too, omg leave me alone! also my mom is mad that i didnt ask if this one girl who sits at our lunch table could go with us because shes new and she doesnt live in a big development or anything. what? i’m just supposed to say, oh, can i bring this girl youve never even met and who probably wouldnt even like you very much? i ask you. we probably wouldnt have very much fun if i did bring her cause my two friends would be talking about their own stuff and id be trying to get the other girl into the conversation and it wouldnt work i dont think cause im bad at that kinda stuff . . . gawd, what a nightmare!
i dont feel like dressing up today. im too lazy. oh well i guess ill feel better after im high on sugar. i had a lollipop this morning in history class and i started feeling really bad, like i started getting a headache and then i felt all like you do when you get a fever. it was really weird.

We had a Halloween parade at my skool today, and the straps of my shirt kept falling down(I was wearing a leotard). Yes, we have a parade. My skool is grades 1-5.
My friend’s birthday party is the 10th, and I’m so hyped up b/c we get to make our own Ology books. As in Egyptology, Wizardology, etc.

we had an impromptu costume contest thing at lunch today and my friend dressed up as a hiker/backpacker and entered into it. so when they called her name, they called her a “backpack”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :shock::lol::razz: then they were like, oops, i meant backpackER! a kid dressed up as osama bin laden. it was really funny!!! he almost one . . . but instead this girl did who dressed up as a peapod . . . it wasnt nearly as good a costume though . . . i voted (aka clapped and screamed) for osama.

The gifted teacher is trying to get us to prepare for the Scholastic Scrimmage. We watched the tape from last year. I knew the answers to over half of the questions, which was bueno. And I tried so hard not to laugh when the people introduced themselves. Because two of them were in the same room. But one sounded completely asleep and the other used the word “jammin'” in relation to a guitar. Which is always pathetically hillarious.
And I will actually work now. I’ve been getting more studious. Which is so totally weird.

Band concert tonight! w00t! Then tomorrow night the jazz band gets to see the chuck mangione concert free (w00t! i love jazz band…) and meet everybody afterwards and fun stuff like that. Then the next morning we get to go to the radio station and play on the radio!!! Everybody-101.1, i think it’s around 7 or 7:30? I’ll find out so y’all can stalk our fight song. Or something. Not sure what exactly we’re playing. But it’s gonna be good. XD Then middle skool play on saturday night, and soccer game sunday. Homework? Yeah right. Speaking of which, i have a whole chapter of history notes to due. The ones that were due today. And i totally failed the binder thing in latin. Why? I didn’t have dividers. Somebody shall die. Haven’t figured out who yet. Oh, and i might have mentioned how andy wiped all my games again? well i finally managed to steal his and get them all back, plus another app that has puzzley type things. One of them is called block dude and is now my life. It’s really easy once you figure it out, but it’s still my life. XD I decorated my hand today. It was pwettyful. little triangles. And a red smiley face in the middle, because i only got one q wrong on the chapt. 11 quiz in history. Which is good, because i need all the points i can get. I just found out that the point sheet was worth 10 pts. Who grades how you record your points? Honestly, isn’t that what centerpoint’s for? I hate these lame, end-of-semester trivial point grubbing things. Mostly because i rarely do them.

30. What is the American dream, acording to your teacher? I heard that it was for everyone to own the land they lived on and to have a family with kids. I don’t think it’s such a great dream though. I could imagine better goals for a culture.

40- I’ve skipped 2 grades in math (a lot of people at my school skip 1 grade in math, but there are only 3 people in my grade who have skipped 2 grades in math). I could have skipped 3 grades in math, but then I never would have had one of the best teachers at my school, and my school didn’t want to let me because of “social issues”. I haven’t skipped a grade in all the subjects though.
Nah, they don’t let people skip grades here, most just take advanced classes. I only know of 2 people who’ve skipped, my friend lydia and some other kid in 2nd grade.

Why should we be so careful about “politically correct”? People are offended by things, such as native american mascots, which come from a different era, or are not meant to offend. If people don’t reveal their inner bigots when they say “politically incorrect” things, then they still have inner bigots. I think that people should try to understand where that kind of stuff comes from instead of asking everyone to step really lightly around their feelings.
The average age for a Museblogger is currently just under 14.
So, if you want your age factored in there, tell me how old you are!

speaking of leo, oh man. Some kid was taking videos of him during study hall, so leo asked him to stop, and the kid starts choking him! so leo grabbed his head and banged it against his knee, and apparently he got cut. So then leo was sent to the office, but he didn’t get in trouble (whew) because it was in self-defense. So anyway, that was the topic of skool today.
Oh and hunter brought a frisbee, so we played frisbee during lunch. twas fun. andy’s really good at it! that’s surprises me. it was kind of windy though, so it went all over. XD
Leeny got her braces off. she’s had them on for ages…i think she said since like 6th grade or something? anyway, i gave her gum.
I had so much choklit today…i had half a hershey bar at midnight last night (which counts, so deal with it
) and then two packs of m+m’s this morning (these career ppl came in to talk to us about tech skool or whatev and they gave out m+m’s. I was like asleep, so then she asked “who knows anything about this skool? I’ll give you m+m’s” and i was mad b/c i didn’t know anything about the place, i mean i’d only just moved last year! but i wanted m+m’s! Correction: I needed m+m’s! So everybody else was like “yeah, i knew a chef, yeah, my friend’s brother went there, blahblah” and i was like “I know absolutely nothing, but i’d like some m+m’s” So everybody laughed and she said something about how good of me it was to admit it and gave me m+m’s. I’m usually not smart-aleck like that but i didn’t care, i was SOOOO happy to have choklit!!! Anyway…this is all in parentheses, isn’t it? yeah, i was going through the choklit i had. ok) and i had reese’s after skool. And i owe ellison a dollar. He actually talks now! it’s incredible. Even though i still can’t hear half of what he says cuz he’s so quiet.
Math was SO boring today! We have a sub, and something about her voice just puts everybody to sleep. Calks were popping up all over and i had to give lucy games again because she accidentally deleted them. Speaking of which, if i haven’t mentioned, andy finally gave back my cord! w00t! Oh and he’s done a randnum binary version. it’s pretty sveet.
I have to colour a map, do a chapter of notes (yeah, the one due wednesday
) write a story for journalism, do a page of math, and finish a chart for science. Oh and study for the vocab test which i’m taking friday at lunch because i’m going to be on the RADIO!!!! wheee! Schneids said we should just sleep on the bus since we’re going to be at the concert tonight really late and then the radio thing’s at like 6:15 the next morning.
I showed doc the article on schliemann cuz he had just got done teaching that to us and he threw his arms up very dramatically and was like “SEE?! HE’S FAMOUS!” and i was like “wow…”

Did I get a double post? absolutley no idea how to tell. My brother is doing his great books homework, which is this absolutely inane thing he has to do and moans about every week. My brother’s favorite chocolate, by the way, is white choklit. i think he has gone mad. i think if we all write 5 comments a day, we can get a thread 5, even if it is tiny.
I thidk i have a cod. No, seriously, i feel all stuffed up. I want to change my username, because this one is stupid, but I don’t know how.
I really dislike the idea of pushing kids ahead a grade, but then I also really don’t like gifted programs in elementary schools. The idea that some kids are ‘gifted’ or ‘smart’ enough to be moved ahead just sounds really, really pretentious to me. If a kid is having an easy time in school and is obviously bored, give them harder assignments. Let them work at their own pace. Skipping grades is less about the academic level, I think, and more about the social aspect. If a kid skips a grade he/she will miss out on all the social lessons of that grade. Even if he/she is smart enough, they (probably) won’t be ready emotionally or socially to skip the grade and end up with the bigger kids. All of the kids who’ve been moved ahead who I’ve met seem like they needed that extra year in grade-school or what have you. They seem like they’re constantly reminded of how much younger they are than everyone else and have to overact to make up for it. So, yeah, pushing kids ahead is a v. bad idea, unless their birthday is a conflict. Even then, keeping them back seems like a good idea to me. An extra year of preschool never hurt anyone.
Keep in mind, this is my perspective coming from a Montessori environment, where EVERYONE worked at their own speed, so it was really not practical to move a kid up. We had three or two grade levels per class, as well, which also factors into my opinion.

Zallie- I went to a very good preschool when I was 3, so when I moved at age 4, the new preschool decided to move me up to kindergarten because I was ahead of the rest of the kids my age. When I transferred to public school for first grade, they saw my age and said I had to take kindergarten AGAIN. This year was boring and I’m not very social, so I didn’t talk much. This lead the teacher(whom everyone, including adults, who have met her agree she was not ment to teach kindergarten, everyone hated her) to believe I was dumb when in reality I was just really bored. Plus, I didn’t know how to read yet, so they put me in all the lowest classes for first grade. Within half a year, I could read better than most kids in the highest class, and I was always pretty good at math, just shy. They moved me up one reading level, but I am still angry that I was held back when I really didn’t need to be. Granted, I would never have had the friends I have now, but nonetheless I think if a child is accademically capable of doing the work, he/she should be moved up a grade if they and their parents want it. I consider myself to be very mature for my age, always understanding much more than my peers. I had no real friends at school until I went into a gifted program for 4th and 5th grades. I know it sounds bad, separating the the “brighter” children, aka those who score better on standardized tests, but I was finally put with kids whom I could relate to. I met almost all of my best friends in that gifted program. I don’t regret it for a minute. Since then, I’ve kept in touch with almost all my friends, even though we’re all in high school now. Plus, we got great experiances, including a science fair, model UN, and performing a shakespereian play. I remember going to my best friend Molly’s 5th grade play, the wizard of oz, in which she played a munchkin, and the next night she came to see Love’s Labour’s Lost, where I played lady-in-waiting Maria to my friend Kate’s princess. And unlike the Wizard of Oz, where they had two kids play the same part so everyone could participate, those who weren’t actors got to do other things, like lighting, stage crew, my friend nicole was the stage manager, claire did costumes, set designers, and we had two different shows with different casts and tech so we would all have something we alone could do. Those differences really matter, and I think it really shaped who I am. Sorry for the long post, but I just felt I had to say it. Before you go talking about how kid’s shouldn’t be put with other kids under a lable, like in a gifted program, you have to realize that most of these kids never fit social groups at their old schools, and are finally accepted by people who understand them, whom they never would have even met, had it not been for the gifted program. Sorry, lots of memories. Happy events, but I’m sad. I don’t want to go back to highschool.
83 — yeah, a lot of my closer friends are either in the gifted program, not in it but smart enough to be, or are good at english like me.
78 and 83 – I don’t like it only because the people have to be with people older than them. My mom skipped a grade, but my mom made her repeat it so that she could be with her friends.
83 – i don’t have a problem with giving kids harder work or allowing them to take more difficult classes, but seperating the kids into gifted and ‘regular’ seems to me like it’s just asking for rivalry, not to mention the fact that the gifted kids tend to think a lot of themselves because of they are always identified as ‘the bright ones.’ Especially if both programs are in one building, that just seems to be asking for rivalry. I mean, ask yourself this: if you were a ‘regular’ kid in school and they moved your best-friend up to the ‘gifted’ program, how would you feel? Probably not great, right?
After middle-school, I have less of a problem with kids being in academically accelerated programs, especially if the kids are able to chose for themselves whether or not they want to attend a more accelerated highschool. People want to follow all different career paths, so I think giving them the choice to pick their path in highschool makes all the sense in the world.
So basically, my point is this: if a kid is not challenged enough in grade-school give him/her harder work and encourage him/her to participate in outside classes. Do whatever it takes, but don’t classify the kids into ‘smart’ and ‘not smart’ because, really, that’s kind of manipulative.
Did you consider that the problems you encountered in kindergarten/1st grade were related to the school you attended and not the fact that you were too clever? You yourself mentioned that you had a bad teacher. That might be a big part of it.

After I become fluent in French I’m going to start Arabic. I’m giving myself two years to learn French, so I can leave two for Arabic before I graduate. I need to know Arabic because I’m going to be a translator for the IDF and although I’m pretty much fluent in Hebrew, nowadays it pays to know Arabic as well.
Two of my friends speak Spanish fluently. One of the two also speaks Hebrew and English fluently. She’s kinda scary. But yeah…so if anyone is familiar with the song “El Condor Pasa (If I Could)” by Simon and Garfunkel, I wanted to know if el condor pasa really meant “If I could”. So I asked the other friend, Dafna, who is from South America and doesn’t speak English fluently but manages pretty well, what “el condor pasa” means. And she said it means “the car passes” and you yell it at drivers who pass on the right. I thought that was pretty funny.

86- That is what our grade school gifted class was, though. For Reading(3rd and 4th grade), we’d go into anothe rlittle room and have a class with about 6 people. It was called PATS, not gifted, and no one really knew what it ment(I still can’t remember what it stands for). For math, we only met twice a week and would sit in the corner working on harder packets. We would still talk and participate with the others in class and stuff, but we wern’t really ahead of everyone, we just had a different learning style. More discussion and less teaching. We were mainly there because we could understand what to do faster, so we would spend less time on learning each unit and go into a bit more detial, such as why you do things instead of just how to do them. Anyway, my point’s done now. Bye.
40/78/80/83/86/88- I’m born right before the cutoff date for going into the next lowest grade, but I’m in the higher grade of the two near me, and I skipped a grade in math (taking math 2H) and I’m taking regents earth science in 8th grade, but I’ve never skipped a complete grade, although I come as close to doing it without actually as you can get. I was never challenged in the least until middle school and honors classes. If you can handle it and you want to, by all means skip a grade. There’s this one guy I know who thinks I’m the smartest person in the middle school and should skip to 9th, but then I’d miss all my friends, some of who are a grade below me, some in my grade, so I won’t. And I hate in elementary school when they think misbehaving people are bored and smart and try to put all the “smart” kids in one class because I’m always in the class full of misbehaving kids. Only having all the smart kids in one class kind of happened by accident this year because there’s only one configuration of classes for people in regents earth science who have to have health/tech 8th period and leave early to go to the high school for math. We’re all smart and nice and have known each other for years, though, so it’s OK. And I hate when schools try to put people in classes with different people each year to try to make friends because it can separate friends, but 4th and 5th I had the same students in the class and they formed cliques and it was ugly only I had my friends with me and friends in the class below still. So I’m ambivalent. And I had one teacher preschool-3rd, a 4th and 5th grade class where the 4th and 5th classrooms were connected and you could take 4th, 5th, or 6th(5th graders only)level classes, changing classes each subject 6th-now. I go to an average (I think)public school. Those are all my school-related opinions for now.

I was in a “gifted” after school my school invited some kids to in 4th and 5th. It was called MORE(more opportunities for a (something, I forget) education). At least 3 people who were in MORE(me and two others) are in grade-ahead math, and at least 5 that I can think of are in regents earth science, but science is much more common than math(60ish people in science vs. 14 in math) and science is held at the middle school and practically expected.

I just got back from the fall choir concert. OMG we got a standing ovation!! The first standing ovation of the year! And *snort* I actually thought this was a bit funny, b/c every time we practiced, all of us agreed that we sounded horrible! The highlight of the concert was when Men of Note did this thingie from Monty Python (Holy Grail) – They entered from the back (We were in a church), wearing robes. They were doing a Gregorian chant, and hitting themselves on the head w/ folders. I nearly died laughing.

From the perspective of a gifted student who has been suffering for many years from extreme lack of intilectual stimulation, I think that the “categorization” of students brings more benefits than problems. I have heard several arguments for keeping gifted kids in general ed classes, such as that they can help those less smart than them and that seperating out smart kids reduces the self esteem of those left behind. When gifted kids are bored, they start causing problems. Some push the teacher for more information on a given topic. Others read under the table (me). Others cause trouble for entertainment. Nobody wants to explain trivial things over and over again to students who will probably never understand them and don’t care anyway. Most people (including myself) in my experience are aware of the fact that there are other people who are more inteligent than them, and will have to learn to cope eventually. Lying to them will do no good. Julieb is incredibly lucky to have a gifted program which sponsors activities like he or she (which?) describes. The gifted program at my school does very little, figuring that students needing extra challenge will enroll in advanced classes. Even advanced classes have done very little for me. They are usually full of people who are not interested, but whose parents expect them to take said classes. The teachers tend to accelerate rather than to go into more depth in interesting topics. I see what you mean about segregation probably being a bad thing, but school is not the only venue for friendship, and classes are not the only place in school where socialization takes place. I am extremely sorry for this rant. It belongs on the complaints thread. I also apologize if I sound conceited and like I am better than everyone else.

the concert was pretty incredible. The guitar player was amazing!!! and the trumpet was so good! and the flugelhorn of course! w00t w00t! Pwn4g3!
So we sat in the balcony, front row. Free. Yay for free stuff! Anyway, the balcony at the southern’s kind of freaky. You go up the steps inside, and then to get to the front row you go back down more steps which are incredibly steep, and you walk along a really narrow space next to an extremely low railing. Hardly any leg room either, but we couldn’t really complain cuz hewitt’s legs are five times longer than everybody else’s. First half was just the columbus jazz orchestra. At intermission, we all went out and stood in a circle and talked about freaky teachers. Like pretty much the whole science and history depts and brendell. Then carolynn asked if i would go get skittles from the concessions with her, and i said i didn’t have any money, and she’s like “i’ll buy you skittles if you come with me” so i said “yes omg you rock!” So i got more sugar.
Second half chuck mangione came on and played lotsa fun stuff, the only two i recognized being Children of Sanchez and Feels So Good. Then we got to meet everybody! chuck mangione shook hands with everybody and asked their name+instrument. He calls the trumpets “honkers”. Then the trumpet guy, byron stripling, gave an inspirational speech about sticking with it and stuff. We also got to say hi to the guitar player (who did i mention was incredible?) and the drummer and the piano player (who was also incredible) Carrie took some pics for the torch, then we all left. Now we get to go on the radio in 8 hrs, w00t. busy busy. I have so much hw left too. So much for sleep.

Re: gifted – Aah, but how do you decided who’s intelligent and who’s just a regular kid? Especially so young, I think classifying kids into ‘smart’ and ‘not-smart’ is ridiculous. What if a kid is an amazing writer and reader, but is still having trouble with math facts, is that reason to keep them in the ‘stupid’ room? In many cases, probably yes.
Also, standardized tests are often used to admit kids into gifted programs, which just irks me. Standardized tests measure nothing more than how good you are at taking tests. Decided whether kids are smart or not based on a test seems pretty stupid. Intelligence isn’t so easily defined as that.
So, I think in most schools, letting kids take advanced classes, while keeping them in the same grade is the best path. Let them learn faster, if that’s what they really want, but don’t segregate them into ‘intelligent’ and ‘not intelligent’ because, again, that’s manipulative.
96 and every other comment about it – I don’t have any experience with “gifted” programs, (my school doesn’t have one) but I thought they worked differently. I thought that if you were good at English but bad at math, you went to the gifted class for English but not for math. But I don’t know, and maybe it’s different depending on where you go. And yes, your last comment is what is probably right. But isn’t that basically what you do with gifted classes? It’s “intelligent” and “a different, faster type of intelligent,” too, I think…

I was at snack with my friends and pumpkin cream cheese was out. I had never tried cream cheese before, and thought it was probably terrible. My friends badgered me to try it. 40- Meh… I almost skipped kindergarten (that counts as a grade), but my mom decided I shouldn’t ‘cuz I didn’t have many friends. As a matter of fact, I made most of my friends in kindergarten.

Just put up halloween decorations while putting off doing review for math exam on monday. Going to town parade tomorrow with best friend who makes a gold fish look like it has a superb attention span. And I’m the one with ADD. Very fun. Boy/Girl scout troops, people in really old cars throwing candy, fire trucks, tee shirts(and occasionally popovers) thrown from tops of trucks, tiny fair rides for little kids, free cider, insurance lectures. It’s tradition, and I can’t wait!

Hello again! This is my fourth post in a row. i wonder if I am going to get a quintuple post or something! stranger things have happened. My mom is mulling cider for my halloween party at karate. I like mulled cider. It tastes so good! i have had my guinea pigs for a year and a day. Their names are Wolverine and nutmeg and they are both girls but we pretend wolfy is a boy and they eat a lot oand they really like hay and cat grass and they eat the seeds of cucumber but not the outside and wolfy needs his toenails clipped but everyone in my family hates clipping his toenailsand nutmeg had a baby but she died and that was a long sentence! I slept for 12 hours last night. Sooo goood…i was seriously sleep deprived. My right eye hurts from rubbing it so much over the past couple days.
We lost the football game. :'( No playoffs for us. Idk what happened, we just played terribly. It was raining really hard. We didn’t even wear uniforms, just jeans and parkas. Everybody took their glasses off for the first half, because believe it or not we could actually see better without them. (as in-without them i could see danny a row ahead of me only slightly blurred. with them, i could just make out the blurry outline of my hand. Yep, no-glasses wins)

Yay! VERY HYPER AND PROCRASTINATING! BUZZED OUT ON CANDY THROWN BY 8 YEAR OLDS IN UNIFORMS! YAY! Feeling very old. Apparently, some of the little scouts didn’t realize we’re ONLY 14, and didn’t throw us candy. My friend actually yelled “WE’RE NOT TO OLD FOR CANDY!” at the very shocked old people riding in cars built in the 20’s. We covered her in political stickers. Every one. I literally ran to the other side of the street during the middle of two “floats” (there aren’t really any floats, everyone just sort of marches or rides in cars) to grab a sticker for a candidate we hadn’t gotten yet. In the end, there was not a space left on her front and there was a bumper sticker on her back that said “Got Pilk?” 2 tee shirts, a boatload of junk(including a jar opener, frisbee, nailfile, and wet wipe) and lots of candy thrown later, we had pizza&burgers and went home. Now I’m depressed because I really do have tons of work to do. Oh well, thats what sunday’s are for.

Hi guys, I’m back, and I just skimmed through about 300 posts and thought of a bunch of responces, but I’d be here all night if I wrote them all down. I was only gone for 4 days.
Anyway, I went somewhere awesome that I can’t even describe so anyone could understand completely. It was the FFA national convention in Indianapolis, IN. It is the largest gathering of students in the nation and the largest gathering of anyone second to the democratic and repuglican conventions. There were about 50,000 FFA members there, just a tenth of all FFA members in the country. We heard Terry Bradshaw and Clark Kellogg speak and the national officers who acted comfortable giving 1/2 hour long speaches to 40,000-50,000 people without notes and they are only about 20 years old. Everyone was in official dress, consisting of a jacket with the person’s state and town. It was so cool to look around and see a group from Iowa there and some from Florida and Texas and Hawaii and Alaska and Puerto Rico and Oklahoma and Colorado… Every state was represented.
Is anyone here in FFA? y’all don’t seem the type from what I’ve read on the posts but I could be wrong. The name Future Farmers of America usually turns people off, but FFA is more about learning leadership skills and public speaking and exploring careers and getting teenagers motivted to get up and do things that they want to know more about.
Unfortunately, now i have a week’s worth of homework to do tonight and tomorrow to be ready on Monday and I just noticed that I forgot my math book which I need… and I got no sleep on the bus last night so I am in a complaining mood *goes off to do some more complaining where I don’t annoy the other MBers*

I am reading John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, and it is one of the worst books ever written. Kino drinks pulque for breakfast. I don’t know if you’ve ever had pulque, but it’s a thick alcoholic drink made from fermented agave leaves. Disgusting. And really, really, potent. I am surprised he is able to walk, let alone crush scorpions and dive for pearls. Also, Kino and Juana don’t talk to each other AT ALL. Which is weird. And Steinbeck obviously hates all physicians EVER. Oh, and somebody should have told him that La Paz is on the Gulf of California, NOT the Gulf of Mexico. [Bastard.]

(225) Queenie J, I feel your pain. We not only had to read The Pearl, we had to act it out in class (which unintentionally rendered it a comedy). As far as I was concerned, the book’s only virtue was its brevity in comparison to other Steinbeck novels. Which was still no excuse for making students read it. I spent much of my time in English designing my own ideal curriculum. What we had in place clearly was intended to make people despise literature.

I think that JK Rowling is going to kill off Harry. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I have a friend who identifies the Golden Trio as Hermione, Idiot #1, and Idiot #2. It’s fairly accurate.
I’ve read the original Mary-Sue litmus test. I now use it for all my writing, to make sure I have no Sues. I’ve never come out with anything past a borderline. If I got borderline, I scrapped the charecter–I only use non-Sues.
The only reason I can forgive my 8th grade english teacher for making us read the pearl is that he is Mr. O and he let us read animal farm(which I had read in 2nd grade) and explained the difference between “communism(utopian)” and “communism(china+russia)” I can not forgive 9th grade teacher though because she dislikes me and I can’t figure out why.

wow, haven’t been on here in a day, and there’s already nearly a hundred more comments!
yesterday, we went to cedar point which was really fun. we had a hard time convincing this one friend to go on this upside down ride called the corkscrew, but once she went on it, she thought it was really fun and we all went on it again. there was another upside down ride we went on, it was really fun too. we also went in this egyptian haunted house thing… it wasn’t that scary though.
yesterday i also had a horse show! i got 1st, 2nd 3rd and 6th place. yay for me!
now, i must go and do homework… *grumble grumble*

Hmm…I can feel a long, long entry coming.
**The Choir Trip to MSU**
After being on the road for ten minutes, we stopped at a random convienience store to stock up on Bawls and Red Bull. Actually, I just got one little thingie of Bawls, b/c I usually can’t stand carbonated stuff – but the other three ppl I was with got like…maybe four energy drinks apiece…and drank them ALL within fifteen minutes…So there I was, just listening to musik, watching everyone else bounce off the walls…It was kinda funny.
The Marriott was def TEH PWNXOR!! It’s probably the fanciest hotel I’ve ever stayed at. OK, it had:
-Seven floors, as well as an underground parking lot
-Those glass elevators that go reely reely fast
-ESCALATORS!! Have you ever tried to talk w/ someone on one of those…when you’re going one way, and they’re going the other way? It’s fun.
-A winery (But they wouldn’t let us inside…)
-A spa
-A “roofie thing,” quoting my dear friend, who must have forgotten what a balcony was or something…XD
– (FREE!!) B&BW stuff – I tooke the orange/ginger aromatherapy lotion stuff…
-A pool, of course
-As well as the B&BW stuffins, our room also had a shoe mitt (gigglegiggle), sewing needles, mouthwash, Internet connection (But no compy, for some reason…), a coffeemaker, down pillows + comforters…Oh goode ness, it was soooo neat.
After checking out the room, I joined a bunch of random ppl for dinner – Man, there are like restaurants every two feet in Lansing, I swear. And of course, you know how indecisive we teenagers are…After we checked out a ton of restaurants, we settled on this one that had a ton of neon thingies on it…You know that thing about kids + shiny things…Yeah. LOL Jeesh, I don’t even remember what the place was called, but I had the best hummus I’ve ever tasted there.
After dinner, we met at a piano on the second floor to practice – The second floor had this big open square in the middle of it, where you could looke down and see the lobby. So we stood around it and sang…It was so fun. Unfortunately, the ppl working there were already kinda annoyed w/ us (…I can kind of see why…) – This waitress came out of the restaurant (Yeah, the place actually had a restaurant too) and said that the ppl inside were complaining. I mean, jeesh…We weren’t THAT bad…What’s wrong w/ a little musik while you eat?
Sometime later, I was back in the room…and my friend comes running in, yanks open the nightstand drawer, pulls out The Book of Mormon, and runs back out of the room – Then she went running down the hall, shoving the book in ppl’s faces and “healing their souls”…OMG it was absolutely hilarious.
We actually got to bed before midnight.
…But then we had to wake up at six. We came downstairs to breakfast, only to find that, for some reason, they had decided to not let us have the real food…so we had the continental. It wasn’t that bad…The only thing I didn’t like was that they didn’t have any coffee set out. I had to hunt around for a waitress and aske for it. When they came to the table w/ the coffee pot…It was so funny…The lady just plunks this coffee cup down in front of me, and fills it up…While standing like four feet away from the table!…Like I was a filthy street urchin or something – I thanked her, and she didn’t even acknowledge that I did…Oh well, I thought it was kinda funny.
We got to the Union at 8…and it turned out that we weren’t singing until 2:30! We were the second to last choir! And we couldn’t even leave the performance hall…Well actually, I did – to go to the bathroom – and this lady got angry w/ me. Honestly…
But we did very well…The judge guy seemed to really like us (The judges at these things seem to always be sort of cracked-out happy/enthusiastic, but he seemed esp hyped-up after we finished…LOL). Well…w00t for that then!

…Okay, I’m back.
I managed to avoid that guy I was talking about the other day. It was so funny though…
Me: *Roaming around hotel*
Guy: Hi.
Me: Ahllo.
Guy: Well, I’m hanging out on the balcony.
Me: *Immediately realizes that he might be leading up to something* Bleh…Must be kind of cold up there.
Guy: Ah…No. It’s fun!
Me: Well, that’s good that you’re having fun. I’m going to go ah, take a catnap now…
Guy: Well, if you happen to…wake up…soon, I’ll still be up there.
Me: Alrighty then. *Goes to hide out in room for awhile*
We had this conversation at least three times…I don’t hate him or anything; he’s just starting to creep me out a bit.
Hello Everyone! I haven’t been onh here since Friday morning so I’m really behind. Oops! Since itis now officially Oct.31 then I am going to ask if my muse contest thinghas arrived yet. I was relly stupid and waietd until Oct.27 to mail it off. My costume was really cool though! I was a fly! Buzzzzzz!
You know what’s really annoying?! People have already started getting ready for Christmas and it’s Halloween! Grrrrrrrrrr!

these jerkasses on my bus were annoying me this afternoon. this one guy was like will you go out with my friend (who lives on my street) and i was like no and the friend was like hes the one who likes you not me and then they started arguing. it was really funny and a little flattering
im going trick or treating with my friend who ive never gone with before and she just moved into a new neighborhood but my other friend who i usually go with was expecting me to go with her and so she gave me this whole lecture about it, just randomly out the blue. i was like, hey, glad to see you too, omg leave me alone! also my mom is mad that i didnt ask if this one girl who sits at our lunch table could go with us because shes new and she doesnt live in a big development or anything. what? i’m just supposed to say, oh, can i bring this girl youve never even met and who probably wouldnt even like you very much? i ask you. we probably wouldnt have very much fun if i did bring her cause my two friends would be talking about their own stuff and id be trying to get the other girl into the conversation and it wouldnt work i dont think cause im bad at that kinda stuff . . . gawd, what a nightmare!

We had a Halloween parade at my skool today, and the straps of my shirt kept falling down(I was wearing a leotard). Yes, we have a parade. My skool is grades 1-5.
My friend’s birthday party is the 10th, and I’m so hyped up b/c we get to make our own Ology books. As in Egyptology, Wizardology, etc.
we had an impromptu costume contest thing at lunch today and my friend dressed up as a hiker/backpacker and entered into it. so when they called her name, they called her a “backpack”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :shock::lol::razz: then they were like, oops, i meant backpackER! a kid dressed up as osama bin laden. it was really funny!!! he almost one . . . but instead this girl did who dressed up as a peapod . . . it wasnt nearly as good a costume though . . . i voted (aka clapped and screamed) for osama.
