Well, love is the most prevailent themes in most all songs, so I do have some of that, but also random stuff and the world. See poems&songs thread if you’re really that interested.

Most likely b or c. I often listen to music in the background while doing homework, but sometimes I just listen to music without my attention on anything else.

    2. Do you play an instrument, or write music?
I play violin. I also play percussion, but not nearly as seriously. Yes, I compose music. I’m seriously considering that as a career option.

    D. Definitely D.

    2. Do you play an instrument, or write music?
    Yes; I play piano.

    3. If you said “yes” to #2, what kind of music?
I am forced to play classical: for example, this week is Bach Week and next is Rachmaninoff and the week before last was (I think) Schumann Days. I like jazz better, though. Especially twenties jazz. Not that I have the finger separation for it.

    4. What is the general subject of the words (if there are any in your type) in the music you listen to/write?

The LingLing Brothers (these 3 silent, stony Chinese triplets who all have ‘Ling’ in their names, who never talk to us or make mistakes) won’t do anything, but I have plans to get up there with my Shostakovich and start playing William Gillock’s jazz style (which sounds BEAUTIFUL).

98 – PEDANT ALERT – I assume you’re usng the modern vague and sloppy definition of “medieval”?

The printing presses hadn’t got going by 1485, so only one or two medieval ballads have survived. Monks weren’t inclined to preserve pop tunes. The only slightly morbid medieval song I can think of is

Miri it is while sumer ilast, with fuweles song
Oc, nu neheth windes blast and weder strong
Ei, ei! what this night is long,
And ich, with wel michel wrong,
    Sorew and murn and fast.

(sorry for the modernised spelling – I don’t know how to do thorn and yogh on Museblog).

There are lots of Tudor and Stuart ballads, but they’re mostly about sex, violence, religion, crime and freak events. Much like the modern press, actually. There’s the Death of Essex, of course, and Three ravens – that’s pretty miserable. We could have a thread to discuss those, but everyone would get depressed.

I changed my mind. The one I really like a) probably isn’t medeival, and b) isn’t really morbid. Except I noticed the other day when I was listening to it that somebody burns. So i’m officially in love with pandora…i’d heard of it, but i didn’t actually use it until a few days ago…actually it’s probably been about a week or so. but yeah. it’s pretty sweet.

    k, fun polling stuff

    1. What genre of music do you listen to the most?
    classic rock

    2. What band(s)/composers do you listen to the most?
Dire Straits, The Who, The Beatles, The Doors, The Police, Billy Joel, Styx, most recently Phish

    3. Do you have an iPod/mp3 player? What kind is it?
shuffle. looking into getting something else cheap and refurbished with more space (preferably a mini), if i make enough money this summer

    4. What is your favorite song?
Yeah right. Like i can pick one of those. Um…the one i have stuck in my head right now is something from Titanic (the musical, not the movie). i don’t remember which song it is. Being in pit is really annoying because you don’t know the words to anything.

    1. How much time do you spend a week listening to music
d, over six hours. most weeks anyway

    2. Do you play an instrument, or write music?
I play trumpet, used to play violin and piano, want to play bass guitar, but that requires a bass guitar, which i don’t exactly have. i should probably get one…

    3. If you said “yes” to #2, what kind of music?
Band music (marching band stuff like sloopy, tear it up, the hey song, chameleon, sir duke, etc and boring concert stuff like miss liberty and whatever else we’re playing now (i don’t remember the names)), full orchestra music (carmina burana), pit music (titanic)

    4. What is the general subject of the words (if there are any in your type) in the music you listen to/write?
Usually vaguely depressing ones. But meaningful, or at least with some appearance of meaning. At least something that will easily succumb to my overanalyzation skillz. I especially like songs that tell a story of some kind, even if it’s not a story that makes much sense.

Karl Sanders plays a lot of egyptian scales and is extremely talented, and George Kollias is one of the best drummers out there. But you might be scared. Be careful.
Otherwise, definitely go with Korpiklaani, Battlelore and Kamelot. Korpiklaani are finnish folk metal, great for drinking (the first track on Tales Along This Road is called Happy Little Boozer- subtle, eh?). Naturally, there’s nothing wrong with believing that some music is terrible, but that doesn’t mean the person who enjoys the music has horrific taste. I’ve had a lot of people roll eyes when I tell them my favorite artist is Kelly Clarkson (my dad is probably still mourning that I am not big on classical music. It’s good, but it’s not for me). Maybe I have bad taste. It doesn’t really matter as long as I enjoy listening to her.

Okay, my rant is over. Anyways, I spend a lot of my time trying to record songs on the radio on a terrible tape recorder. My boombox used to have a tape recorder built in, but my two-year-old sister got into it and broke it. If you put a tape in it now it breaks it. :(

154: soloing is easy, man. As long as your not going for the ultra-virtuosic stuff, like I do, then all you need to do is learn a few scales to play over the chord progression. For example, if it’s a I-IV-V progression (the simplest in rock), and the root note (I) is E, then play a few notes in the scale of Em. Or Emaj. Or G, as it’s the same scale.

The Else came out today on iTunes! I of course downloaded it and am editing song themes on the wiki.
My reactions: Overall, not very TMBG-like. Some songs more so than others. I’m Impressed, Take Out The Trash, and Feign Amnesia almost sound like normal rock. I’ve been comparing them to Relient K without the religion. But I like them anyway. I can’t choose favorites. Of course it’s worth it, any TMBG is worth it.

  207. curious and questioning says:

185- I’m getting the regular CD in addition to the iTunes one. It’s supposed to have a second disc with more stuff. And it’s supposed to have pictures. I’m hoping for a big one I can put on my wall. Ideally, I’d want one like those boy bands used to do with pictures of the faces and signatures. I know that’s hopeless because only the boy bands with adoring fans ever do that, but my relationship to TMBG is equivalent to one of the adoring fangirls.

I will now post my overview of The Else:

    Track 1: I’m Impressed
Not a bad song, just not identifiably(sp?) TMBG. At first I hated it for not sounding like Them. Now I’ve become used to it and it’s acceptable. I’m even starting to like it as one of Their songs.

Track 2: Take Out The Trash
A normal song that only is special at all because They did it. Not bad, just not TMBG.

    Track 3: Upside Down Frown
It sounds like Them. The clever title and ideas expressed. Not the best song on the album. Not bad, though. Just an average song.

    Track 4: Climbing The Walls
It gets stuck in my head sometimes, which is a good indicator. It sounds kind of normal rock-ish at first listen, but the lyrics had some thought put into them and on a second or third listen you notice the subtle harmony.

Track 5: Careful What You Pack
Average. Originally supposed to be in the background of a movie, which explains the beginning. It was rejected, though, from the movie. It has my favorite line ever. “She thinks she’s smart, she’s just curious”. Otherwise the lyrics aren’t exceptionally good. It can get stuck in my head, though.

    Track 6: The Cap’m
A fairly standard TMBG theme- the person who thinks they’re the center of the world. Better tham some of the others with this theme, though. Best tune of them, the lyrics are not as good as Only Think Of Me (that’s on youtube)(Your apparent nonchalance belies the fact that you can only think of me!) but they’re not bad just because they’re not the best, and the tune makes up for it. Average for Them.

    Track 7: With The Dark
Three very different parts. Not my favorite. There are some songs I just don’t like as much as others. It’s not bad because of it. And it’s better than tolerable. The lyrics aren’t bad, I guess.

    Track 8: The Shadow Government
I didn’t really like this one at the concert. Another one that grows on you. See I’m Impressed.

Track 9: Bee Of The Bird Of The Moth
Finally another TMBG song! Almost reminds me of Birdhouse. Not as good as Birdhouse, but nothing is. Gets stuck in my head. I like starting with it when I’m listening in the bus in the morning. The beginning of a stretch of good songs. The end is joy, both voices out of sync with each other.

    Track 10: Withered Hope
One of my favorites. I want to call it my favorite on the album, but I can’t quite justify it when I hear some of the other songs. Frequently stuck in my head. As nonsensical as any good song. Love the harmony. It wasn’t understandable at the concert, which really disappoints me, because now that I can hear the words it’s great.

    Track 11: Contrecoup
Words I’d never know otherwise. The bridge, which wasn’t in the demo version from Clock Radio/the podcast, is a good addition. Another of the better songs.

    Track 12: Feign Amnesia
Bonus points for a clever title. A little better then I’m Impressed, but I’d give it the same rating because the normal tune makes up for the slightly better lyrics.

    Track 13: The Mesopotamians
Another song which is love. Immediately recognizable. The reason I can’t say Withered Hope is my favorite song without guilt. The harmony in the chorus is enough to make me forgive them for all the imperfect songs on the album.

    Overall album thoughts
Not as many songs as a lot of the other albums. :( The beginning doesn’t make me like it, but the end is enough to justify the album. I’d say, out of five, rating it against the TMBG I’ve heard it gets a 3, rating it compared to everything in my iTunes library, a 4.25, and any TMBG is a 4.95 at least comparing it to every song I’ve ever heard (the bus plays the worst radio stations. I dislike the current popular music.)
I don’t rate anything in iTunes, though, because they don’t offer decimals.

208- Well, you can’t exactly categorize TMBG. Apparently, they’re rock or alternative rock, but I wouldn’t believe iTunes. I also wouldn’t believe the evil TMBG-haters at my school (they exist just to provoke me into violence, I swear) who, without hearing a full song, claim that it’s country. I would suggest listening to a song to determine what they’re like. There are videos on YouTube for a lot of their songs. Completely ignore the videos, though, and just listen to the song. The videos are weird and have absolutely nothing to do with the song. My favorite song is Birdhouse In Your Soul, a search should be able to find it fairly quickly. Or you could try Ana Ng, or Experimental Film, or lots of other songs that I can’t think of right now. This Might Be a Wiki is useful.

What do you use to get scratches off your iPod? I just got a new battery addition thing and case, and when I took it out of the old case, it was disgusting. The case really hurt it. It took a while to get the thin bits of melted plastic off with a lint-free cloth, and there are some spots where stuff inside the case created these little circles of matte and abrasion, especially on the front, that make it look bad. Around the sides of the screen especially, which is a problem. And there’s a big circle on the back where the clip attached to the case. And the bottom I don’t want to think about.

239- I was probably exaggerating a little. The new case is small enough that the battery clips on over it. It’s rubber-plastic-like and it shouldn’t do anything to it except maybe protect it from such abuse in the future. There’s no screen protector, though. The old one almost fits under the edges right. I need a solution for that eventually. The old case was supposed to protect it against drops, and it’s the same rubber-plastic kind of thing, only a lot thicker, and it was too big for my iPod and let lots of paper dust (these fibers, almost) in, which scratches it. And I left it in the sun once or twice with the case on. But now I’ll find a way to fix it and all will be well.

Alternative, that’s alternative rock, I think. Whatever it is, I have a lot of it, it’s the label most They Might Be Giants stuff is given, and I therefore like it.

Ok, so today we went to the musical Tomfoolery, which is a whole bunch of Tom Lehrer songs that doesn’t have a plot. But that’s OK. It was cool. Weird hearing other people sing the songs, but cool nonetheless. In these last five weeks I’ve been to live performances of my top three favorite music artists. I’m the luckiest person on Earth. Can you believe that was filed under R&B?! Gah. The only newer artist I can recommend in that genre would be Alicia Keys.

So, anyone else know of Ted Leo and the Pharmacists? A friend made me aware of them and I enjoy them greatly. And there’s Jefferson Airplane, my running addiction.

I also desperately want sheet music for The Dresden Dolls. It’s really simple, yet sounds really cool. Anyone listen to them? They’re punk cabaret ^_^

And I’d have to agree with FS about the power chords and such. Whenever I’m subjected to non-internet radio, I end up pointing out chord patterns. There’s too much Em, C, G, B, Em, C, G, B, and occasionally Em, C, G, D. Of course I annoy people by muttering the names of the chords… but it’s mostly because I like to do so.

I once managed to walk my dad through the chords for a TSO song after going to one of their concerts. [He plays guitar; I was listing the names of the chords at him ^_^]

The Ark is banned from playing in the USA. That’s so depressing.

The third movement of Moonlight is absolutely killing me. I still can’t play it properly. Or, at least, the way I’d like to play it, because I’d rather play songs the way I think they sound best, not according to the written dynamics… So then I just make stuff up when I get annoyed with it, which is all the time. Cool!

Someone around here is giving lessons in hammered dulcimer. ‘Twould be cool to learn. But I’m not very musical, so it would probably all be lost on me.

Especially the one called Phantom of the Opera, that’s a great song. :D (and yes, i’m talking about the musical-ish opera or the opera-ish musical or whatever you want to call it, not a band called phantom of the opera)

fridgey-i went to wikipedia and read their article on Rush and yes, they are indeed classified as rock/metal. in that case, i love metal. but they are not as hardcore as like metallica.incidentally Rush greatly influence bands such as metallica, dreamtheatre and more. fun. do you know any other bands similar to Rush regardless of genre?
