  1. Maybe it should be . . .

    Time Travel!

    Musical instruments!

Clothes! (Not as weird as it sounds. There was a clothes Muse once, wasn’t there?)

  2. OK, how about intelligent clothing? Clothes with built-in sensors, heating, cooling, video displays, colour and shape changing facilities. It’s not here yet, but it’s coming. What would you like to see?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  3. 2- That sounds good! I would want my clothes to have a built-in EMP ray, so whenever someone’s talking loudly on a cell phone, ZAP!! The cell phone is fried!!

  4. i want a shirt thas gots a flexi-plasma display in the arm, and comes with asensor that you adhesive to one temple and it would be virtual reality, it wouldnt be in front of your face actually, but the electric impulses sent by the sensor make it like that

  5. Hmm…..I’d like a shirt that can tell me when I’m having an asthma attack, because I never seem to notice that I’m having one until it’s full-blown.

  7. 5- You have asthma?

    Weird word. Asthma.

I cannot think of a single piece of intelligent clothing that I would like to have. Is something wrong with me?

    Pie 0

  8. 7 – No, nothing’s wrong with you, your just a country parson. j/k. Yes, I have asthma. Annoying thing, it is.

  9. 10~ wouldn’t that also prevent breathing? I don’t think that would help very much…
I don’t know about intelligent clothes. For the moment I think they’re okay in Sci-Fi, and I don’t read that sort of thing, so you can see where I’m coming from. I like historic costumes as much as jeans and a t-shirt, so I’m sorta lost on this topic!
Another cool thing is organic clothes. You can actually get some nice and good looking organic clothes. I’m going to get some tie-dye socks. and shirts. [plain shirts…] *laughs as everyone else recoils at the thought of tie dye socks*

  14. the graphic equalizer shirt has vertical bars that rise and fall in a pattern corresponding to whatever sound is in your environment.
Koko du Pelle (17): I NEED that shirt. I’m always late for everything.
Bird Kid? No, i don’t believe i’ve seen such a youngster. Sounds cool, though.

  15. I want the Ultimate towel. The one with a built in compas, mp3player with headphones/speakers, secret pockets that no one can see, a calculator, phone/instant messaging-email thingy, a see-through pocket for my current Muse, and the ability to choose the patern/design/picture on the towel whenever I want. And it would all be waterproof. And not flamable, so you’d be semi-fireproof. Ish.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  16. 8~ I’d like that too.
22~ And the ultimate towel should be able to have an adjustable heating/cooling unit like in post 8. I want that so badly now.

  19. Are you new, Musicman841? *pies* Now you really need a shirt that destroys stains!

How is this clothing intelligent? I would like a shoe that I could converse with.

  20. If the towel is waterproof, doesn’t that kind of defeat the original purpose of a towel? All those features are great, but if you can’t even dry yourself with a towel, it’s useless.

  24. intelligent clothing? strange idea. how about an indestructable shirt so that no matter how many times i fall and scrape myself, my shhirt will never be destroyed. and make it stain proof also. like one of those speedo thingys.
33-how will the n00bs learn then? they need expirience, don’t they? we can teach them as they go along.

  25. LOCKE! Be nice, please! he was actually on topic for the first post, then people started to pie him! If you pie a no0b on this thread, how about you also have to say something on topic?

I just want shoes that grow to match my feet perfectly, shirts that aren’t too/big/in/certain/areas, pants that actually fit skinny people so I don’t have to wear belts, and all of these would be stain free, have tons of pockets, remind me when I need to get off the computer, and can grow extra arms for when I need a hand with something.

  26. 12- i love historical clothing. If it wouldn’t be that I’d get arrested for escaping from the local ren festival, I’d wear large skirts, corsets, and sleeves that hang down. *dreams*

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  27. 37- I have a pair of indoor soccer shoes that somehow did grow with my foot. When I bought them, they were too small, but now I have about another centimeter of toe room to go. Shoes don’t have to be intelligent to grow with your foot, I guess.

    Mmm! More pies.

    Pie 0

  28. 33 – Do not insult the n00bs. They might leave if you do that.

Intelligent clothing I want? Clothes with built-in air conditioners so I’d never get too cold or hot.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  29. 22- Egad, yes!

    33- Be nice to newbies…!

    37- Agreed!

    38- Me too! Huzzah for Ren Faires and Rennie garb! Let us found a nation of Ren Faire goodness. Except with electronics, of course. Not historically accurate, but still awesome. I STILL HAVE OVER A MONTH UNTIL THE REN FAIRE OPENS. I also told, like, 345139 people I’d go with them on the opening weekend, haha. I get overly excited at the prospects of such wonder and glory! But then I get jealous because guys can wear kilts and look totally awesome, but I’d look like a Catholic school girl in one. Urgh, I’m so cross-dressing this year! Okay, shutting up…. ^^;

Heh, Vixen, we are indeed kindred spirits.

I would like the idea of a tye-dye shirt. That swirls and changes colour. It would be soooo trippy. Also, the idea of a skirt that fits at my knees. Or maybe of adjustable length. Seriously, I’m too short…

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  30. 41- Indeed. I am even jelous of your name. There is a summer long ren village here, not twenty kilometers from my grandma’s house. Sadly, it is not acceptable to wear ren clothes to visit it. I’d love to get a job there. I’m looking forward to next year!

  31. 33- That’s mean.
34- And that’s meaner. You just said “keep the noobs off” because they might not know what they were doing, but then you posted completely off topic.
37- Yes! I have lost so many gorgeous shoes to my ever-growing feet. *sniff*
38- Corset = ouch. But I agree completely.
41- Can I join the nation?

A tie-dye skirt would indeed be cool.

  32. I think locke might have just been fooling around, and to show he was not being mean then put a random comment next. If so, locke is forgiven.

What about a shirt that has a small computer screen and keyboard on the sleeve you can post to museblog with?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  33. 43- I say you would be able to join our nation. Oh, I don’t tie the corsets that tight unless I’m at the fair. At home, when I dress up, I cheat a little.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  34. 46- Oh good.

Here’s a thing: When you go to Ren fair, (something I have wanted to do for ages) aren’t there an awful lot of “upper-class” people?

Are any of you part of the SCA?

  37. What do you guys where to Ren festivals? I wear a costume that I made that is the costume of an english Lady in Waiting to the queen. It’s a black skirtthat I attached to a brown soft shirt with silk sleeves and and a black corset on top of it all. The corset is one that overweight people use underneith their clothes to looke slimmer, and i bought it at this boutique, and the check out lady looked extremely concerned. Oh, then I wear a hat with a veil. No, it is not a cone hat.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  38. 51.- what do you plan on wearing? Any ideas? If you dress like royalty, expect being treated as such., I mean, random people will bow down to you. I suggest wearing a Lady in Waiting or lesser service job dress until you get the hang of things.

  39. Intelligent clothing? odd that this should be the subject for this thread, seeing as my sister and i were just talking about clothes. it seems kinda weird that girls have so many different options for clothing while guys just wear t-shirts and jeans (mostly). argh. my sister is poking me. it’s really, really annoying.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  40. 53- I agree. kilts seem slightly deflated next to a prom dress. However, the tide may be changing. I was at a design show where colledge students had created clothes with common objects. Mostly, prom dresses mad out of wire, but a wedding dress made out of fortune cookies, fortune cookie wrappers, and fortune cookie fortunes was rather neat. And then came this guy strutting the cat walk with a button up shirt and a skirt! The audience was kind of stunned as the announcer read, ” kilt made completely out of _____________!” I can’t remember what it was made of though. It looked very neat.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  41. 38- Corsets? Those seem rather uncomfortable….

Hmmmmm…… I think smart shoes wouls be cool. They could change from tennis shoes, to flip-flops, to flats, to highheels!

ren festivals sound awesome! Where do you get costumes?

  44. I’d like clothing that could change depending on what I felt like I should be wearing. And clothing that could change its fit to be more comfy (like when you’re sitting or laying down instead of standing)

  45. 42- Wow, though, that’s so awesome. The Ren Faire nearest my house is too far away for me to work there…alas.

43- w00t, we now have a population of three!

46- Heh, same here. Gotta love the poofy shirts, too…

47- Yeah. And also many pirates with varying degrees of pirateyness.

50- A poofy tannish blouse underneath a green and black corset. I got it at Hot Topic, actually, because it dawned on me that they’d probably have some and I just might be able to find one that looks mostly time-period-appropriate. It was the least gothy of the ones there, and had removable straps. So as not to bother the poofy sleeves. And then a long skirt. Usually whatever dark earth tone I can find in my closet. It matches enough to look the part [that is, someone who probably is a very distant relative of someone upper-class, and still rather well-off, just with a not-so-important family with a not-so-important title]. This is all with my trusty pair of black pleather boots… They’re comfortable, but still look the part. I’m working on constructing my own peasanty sort of costume, but I’m rather unskilled… I do think I’ll try looking for a slimming-type-corset, though. Hadn’t thought of that… You’re brilliant! ^_^ I’m also considering getting elf ears and going as an elf, just for the heck of it, but that may be overdoing it. It’s always so awesome how everyone in costume just acts it, too! I love the atmosphere. The one nearest me also has a mud faerie. Who is this lady in a faerie costume who makes amazing sculptures out of mud. Truly, that is the greatest ever job.

55- Either online, at the festival itself, you make them, or you shop around for ages for something that works for the time period.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  46. Also, Alice and biblioRose: What Vixen said. It’s even really easy to modify modern clothing to fit the time period. Also, look for thrift shops and old lady clothing shops. It’s remarkable what you can find, provided you’re looking for it.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  47. OK, for intelligent, read reprogrammable. Suppose you had a shirt, trousers, skirt, whatever, that could change colour and shape? You’d use a PC (or by then, probably an expanded iPhone) to design what you wanted for the evening, hit “upload” adn the garment would assume the required shape and colour. Oh, it would self-clean, too. None of this entirely sci-fi, folks. It’s all being worked on.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  48. 55- Goodwill. My mom found this shirt that looks like a died potato sack shirt. It’s awesome. I found my blouse there.

Guys, ren fair shoes- what to where? I have worn sandal or tennis shoes and hid them beneath a long skirt, but I want a real pair. Also, the elf ears are not overdoing it. You might what to change your dress to be a bit more flowy.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  49. I like the idea of your renaissanice fairs. Over here, re-enactment has all gone dreadfully serious. If the stitiching on your doublet’s wrong, you don’t get into the “best” companies. It’s all very worthy, and a well turned out bunch of re-enactors is a glorious sight to behold, but I do rather hanker after the days when it was just a bit of fun, and people would turn up in their old curtains and with a handbag on their head, because it bore some vague and largely imaginary resemblance to a 15th century hat they’d seen in a bad photocopy of a Burgundian painting. It was all such FUN. I have some sympathy with the much-maligned Tolkien re-enactors, who turn up in elf costumes, wielding plastic swords, and stage mock fights, complete with as much magic as a cheap box of fireworks will produce.

  52. 28- I was thinking more of a waterproof barrier between the sides. Like if you sewed a tarp between two towels, only not aas bulky. Then all your electronic stuff wouldn’t get soggy.

I em extreemly jelous of all of you who have Ren Fairs near you. The closet thing we have is Medieval times, which isn’t the same and you can’t just grab everyone and go there on a whim, and it’s expensive.
Hmm, maybe there’s some near the wisconsin border?

Man, after the first big Kokonvention with everyone that we willeventualy have, we should have a Ren-themed one. Paul can come and wear curtains and a handbag and play fun instruments for us too.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  58. 26- There’s already something called NanoPants which does that. Nanobots woven into the pants make liquids and stuff rool right off (or so the manufacturers claim.) We tested it and it repels everything EXCEPT mustard, for some reason. :???:

The thing is, I don’t have one near me. Unless, of course, I can convince my parents that I AM serious, and get them to drive me to a Ren fair. *goes to dig out old emails with Ren fair links*

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  62. Okay, I sort of helped bring this about, so here’s what I do in costume. I do French and Indian war [1750s] mostly. And I volunteer at Jamestown Setlement.
About your Renassiance Faires. [Prepare for a rant] They are indeed fun, but they can be a grave misinterpretetion of historical fact. You’d be surprised how many people really don’t have a clue about history, and when they see folks dressed up in corsets, bathrobes and elf ears it can really confuse them. Truly. It doesn’t seem like anyone would really fall for some of the zany things they do at the fairs, but they do. And unfortunately, I’ve had to set some people straight about the fact that not everybody in days of yore were yahoos that went about belly dancing and toting HUGE styrofoam “pints” while flirting with Johnny Depp-ized
pirates. I’m sure that you all have a different veiw on it, but from the veiw of trying to be as correct as possible, Ren. Fairs are sort of disappointing. Fun, yes, but if you put a bit more effort into being a bit more historically correct, it would help. End of rant.

Kilts: Yes, they are very cool. I have several friends that wear them. [all boys] and it does take some getting used to. The downside is that you can’t run in them. My friend would walk. Slowly. NEVER run. Actually, I was glad about that. But never mind….

And once again, at least consider doing things a bit more historically correct. It makes the job a lot easier on the rest of us. And correct clothes are no less comfortable or stupid looking than fantasy outfits, so give it a try with good material and use primary resorces when you can.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  63. Okay, I realize how much of a stick in the mud I sound like. Please don’t think I don’t like the Fairs, I do, but I don’t like that people are so clueless about history that they don’t understand that it’s just for fun, not real. I get to deal with the folks that ask which ship is the “Ninia” at Jamestown…. Yeah, no kidding. It’s true.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  64. 58: I caught the reference. *feels special*

Now I really want to go to one of these Ren Faires. There’s one at Ohio State, according to Google. But I don’t think I could convince people I know to go with me teehee.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  65. 80- Not be accurate? *dies of horror* Of COURSE I would be accurate! Well, maybe minus the really uncomfortable undergarments. (i.e., corsets. Ouch ouch ouch. I wouldn’t wear it very tight.) I love history, and I try to be as accurate as possible with the available materials, even if it doesn’t work all the time.

81- I don’t get it. The Ninia? I guess they could just look on the hull, right?
Okay, to my credit, I don’t know anything about Jamestown.

I have a plaid wraparound skirt that might almost count as a kilt, maybe. It’s really nice. It’s a Stuart plaid, though honestly I ought to wear my own. (MacFadden. Don’t worry, you won’t find me by googling MacFadden plaid, and I don’t even know if I spelled it right.) But it’s kind of hard to find, not to mention expensive.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  66. Some Ren fairs are terriblely dissapointing festivals where people get the time periods mixed up and come dressed as ninjas and stuff, and it’s all an excuse to get drunk, but the ones I have been to are really good.

Ren fair shoes, people. What to cover thou ugly feet?

  69. 73 – “Thee” and “thou” are actually quite simple, but people always confuse them, for some reason. They’re fmailiar forms – if you’ve learned a bit of French or German, you’ll have come across something similar.

    Thou is a subject :

    I say
Thou sayest (used for mates, social equals or inferors)
You say (Polite form, used when addressing superiors or for formal situations)
    He sayeth
    She sayeth
    We say
    They say

(shortened forms : thou saist, he saith)

    Thee is an object :
No man shal thee harme while I live, nor do thee ill.

We only use the polite, formal versions nowadays.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  70. And while I’m at it, let’s clear up the nonsense about the -eth ending. That, too, is simple. It’s just the old version of our -s verb ending. So,

    Modern : He goes.
    Old : He goeth.

    Modern : She cries.
    Old : She crieth.

    Modern : It squeals.
    Old : It squealeth.

    Modern : We pray
    Old : We pray.

    Modern : You stink.
    Old : You stink.

    Modern: I cease.
    Old : I cease.

Note : That -eth only appears on the verb after he, she or it.

That’s all there is to it. Simple.

OK, there’s one weird exception. Old legal documents like deeds of ownership usually start with

Witnesseth that I, Eric of Bogham….

which is either a verb without a subject (maybe it implies “This document witnesseth that …”) or else it’s an imperative (I call upon these persons here present to witness that….) in which case it’s ungrammatical, because it should be “Witness that….”. This one continues to puzzle me, and if anyone can sort it out, I’d be very grateful.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  71. Ohh! On the subject of period clothing, I made a ball gown out of some curtains and a skirt and a slip-type dress. I have pictures. Maybe i’ll send them in…

  72. 84- Thy ugly feet.

88, 89- Hmm. I may not be able to speak anything but English, but with all the lessons I’ve received, I can certainly speak it very well. (And archaically. Which I thought I was making up. Wow.)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  73. (91, 84) Or thine ugly feet.

(“Thy” and “thine” work like “a” and “an,” depending on whether the next word starts with a consonant or a vowel sound. So do “my” and “mine.” The Elizabethans weren’t entirely consistent about that, but making the shift shows you know what you’re doing.)

Thy feet, but thine ugly feet.
Mine eyes, but my two eyes.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  74. 62- Will attempt. Heh.

63- I am going to have to try that! Tolkein goodness, that is!

66- Gasp! That would make my life complete!

79- You could always Google for a nice one around wherever you live…

80- The one by where I live has costume contests for the really serious people. But it’s mostly in great fun. People are aware of the fantasy element in it. Mostly. It’s all a good time.

84- Gah, no! Uhm, for shoes, black boots. Under a long skirt, naturally. People don’t really notice them, and they work enough. I did consider just being a barefoot peasant before I remembered the roads at the Faire by me. Ouch!

Huzzah for ye olde grammar. I shan’t mix up thy and thine again!

I still have over a month to wait for the Faire to open. Alas. Well, I suppose that means more time to make costumes. And recruit people to accompany me! I have one good friend who is also overly enthusiastic. I’m trying to talk my boyfriend into going, too. And also my sister, so I’d have another excuse to go. She’s not very keen on costumage, though. Sigh.

There is “steak on a stake” at the closest Faire. I’m a vegetarian, so I don’t eat it. But it sure is fun to say. So I ask random people if they’ve tried it. Just to say, “steak on a stake.” Heehee.

  78. Alice~ you were cringing at the thought of corsets? Don’t. You will only wear them in later time periods. Earlier times the women were wearing what we call “jumps”. It’s like a vest that laces up and has boning in it. Or, you can wear “stays” they are a bit more rigid than jumps, they have more boning, and they don’t have arm holes. Boning was baleen.[sp?] It’s like wale teeth, but they aren’t teeth. You know, the cage like thing that’s in front… Now days they use thin strips of flexible metal. I have survived wearing jumps for a week or so straight, and it’s not hard.
The purpose of that type of undergarment was for support, not to look skinny. Think about it, if you’re lifting heavy iron pots daily, you’ll need some sort of back support. They’d get that in the jumps or stays. You see people who work in hardware stores wearing back supports? Same principle. They actually thought that if you didn’t wear them you’d grow up deformed. Boys wore them untill they were about 7 years old, then they’d be dressed in breeches. Untill then, they were dressed just like the girls.
So wearing the stays and jumps are not uncomfortable, they are actually nice. I like wearing them because they keep me from slumping, and that actually feels better, beleive it or not. It is true, when they are laced too tight they aren’t very fun, and can ruin an appetite, but if you lace them correctly they’re pretty comfortable. So fear not. I’ve been known to do 23 cartwheels in the full regalia. Skirts, jumps, shortgown… the whole thing. I think I fell over when I finished the 23rd one though…..

If you want to do 18th century, look up different historical sutlers for the shoes. I know Burnley and Trowbridge (www.bunleyandtrowbridge.com) sell both 17th and 18th shoes for a fairly reasonable price. That’s where I got mine. One note though: get some shoe inserts with arch support!!! It makes a HUGE difference, ecspecially if you’re going to be wandering around a event or Faire.
Maybe look up the Silly Sisters (www.sillysisters.com) while you’re at it, they have GORGEOUS 18th century clothes. Do some sleuthing, there’s a lot out there. Have fun!

Another book to look up, (while we’re at it) is Shakespere’s Insults
My favourite one: “Methinks thou art a general offence, and all men should beat thee.”

  82. 101~ yes, and their ribcages were a different shape than ours are today, because of it. And they were NOT corsets!!!!!! Corsets are a more recent take on it. But yes, it was because they thought you’d be deformed if you didn’t wear them, like your back would collapse. I’m not sure how long that went on, but if you think about it, dressing all the kids in skirts wasn’t a bad idea, it’s a lot easier to change diapers that way.

My friend has cousins that live in this place, where it;s like living in the middle ages. You have battles and sleep in tents if you don’t build a fortress, and people come in and pillage your home and steal your wife (they give her back after a few hours though, if you don’t go and get her), and leave a flag so you can go after them. It sounds really fun, I’d like to try. They have weapons too, though their battles are more catipulting odd things at others and randishing soards so no one get’s badly hurt. There’s bruses, though.

  106. I went to a Renaissance fair in 6th grade for a field trip, it was lots of fun!! There was this one area where they were teaching dances from back then (which I obviously was really excited about) and then we saw jousting, and some people picked kids out of the audience to be in this mini play thing (which was highly amusing considering few of them can act) and the guys they picked to be the killers started killing the wrong person. So the person died and then came back to life, and the killers then killed the right guy. It doesnt sound funny, but it was actually quite hilarious, becuase they were pretending to kill this person and then the narrator goes “um…he’s over there” and everyone burst out laughing. Anyway, I think it would be fun to be part of a Renaissance fair.

  112. OMG OMG I LOVE THE RENAISSANCE FAIRE!!!!! I go there every year – my record so far is seven years. I always dress up in costume – first i was a peasant, then a page boy (yes, i dressed as a boy), then a gypsy, then another gypsy! (i try to reuse costumes every year if i havent’ grown too much) I’m going to try and join the cast this year, but I don’t know if my parents will let me AGAIN because it’s quite a ways from my house, and in comes the factors of gas money and time and such. And I’ve only got a leaner’s permit, so they won’t let me use the car beacuse of course that still means that one of them has to accompany me….

BUT ANYWAYS, there are always dances that they do at the end of the Faire, you know, period dances, and i’ve memorized a few, i love them so much! Because renaissance dances are so much more fun than any others. I’m afraid I’m going off topic here, but has anyone tried those dances that they did in the time of the French Revolution? Because those are BORING. just boring compared to the Renaissance.

    http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/dihtml/divideos.html

A set of videos giving you all the basic steps and a few full dances, from renaissance to ragtime. It’s a bit formal, they don’t look as if they’re actually having much fun, and the violinist is obviously more used to playing Mendelssohn than Arbeau. But it’s very useful.

  118. How about mythology? This may be boring to everyone here, or maybe there is already a thread for it, but greek mythology just seems to be stuck in my head today. I like Madusa, there was this whole story about her and her sisters once, it was in some kids book, maybe not the actual thing, but before they became hitious monsters, some god was trying to impress them, so he told them that the temple of Athena was his. They went inside, and when Athena got there and found out she was furious, and thought it was the sisters fault or something (?) and turned them into monsters. I think they werent evil but everyone thought they were and they invented gorgonzola cheese, get it? But this was just a book for kids, its twisted and isnt the real thing, unless the ancient greeks really were bizarre and decided to put that cheese thing in the story…..dunno. I probably have everything mixed up. Dont laugh!!! *is confused, tries to remember everything* I have just totally and utterly embarassed myself. Oh well!!! *skips away*

  122. 159- *knows she’s barging in* I liked that book. Being a dane, with a grandmother of twelve grandchildren in one of the oldest families, these stories are still common houshold tales. If someone’s (especially a little red head boy) is misbehaving, my grandmother willl scold that he’s following in Loki’s footprints, and “do you know what happened to Loki? Now he’s chained to a giant rock, and there’s this poisonous snake….” Usually gets the villains behaving a little more civilized. On the back of our oatmeal box that we get at the kiosk, there’s a picture of Thor and his goats. Has anyone ever been to the Iceland Airport? Well, there’s these huge posters any where that show a face, and then says something like, “My name is Maunus. In Norse mythology, Maunus means great. My name is Great.” They’re pretty cool. My cousin’s name is Maunus, by the way. And my brother’s name is Thor, and there’s another cousin named Mikkel, and my grandfather is Leif. :D
