17 – I thought Eclipse was enjoyable in the way all the series is: you don’t have to think about it, pay attention, challenge yourself. You basically just float along looking at the pretty pictures. Beach reading, in essense. With that said, though, I find Bella really annoying. One, she’s so dumb. I mean, how long did it take her to figure out what was up with Jacob in New Moon? I had that figured out by the second chapter, basically. Two, she’s really self-centered. Three, her relationship with Edward is so shallow:
    Bella: OMG YOU”RE SO HOTTTT!!!!111!!1!
Edward: OMG YOU SMELL SO YUMMY omG!1!!!!111!
And also the book just seems kind of.. manufactured, if you know what I mean.

    how goes the Kokonventioning?

my playlist has 1111 songs now, which i find absolutely spiffy. won’t stop me from getting more music, but hey i’ll enjoy it while i can (aka brag about it :D it’s like eleventy-one PLUS)

oh and i’m up to dire straits…i did david bowie and def leppard twice, because as soon as i finished with them i got a whole bunch more (especially def leppard) so i went through and listened to them again.

urrrgh, i really don’t want to think about skool. people keep reminding me of it. oh well, this year shouldn’t be too horrible. honors chem will probably be hell (but a rather amusing hell, according to hewitt and danny) but i’ll be on torch and i got hemmelgarn for AP lang+comp (i’m pretty sure). and apparently AP gov is an easy A (nice change from last year…AP US was an easy F unless you worked your butt off. we all did pretty well on the test though, so i guess it worked out)

    anyway

i’m not thinking about it any more. grr.

i should do something tomorrow….mebbe go see a movie or something…

I liked Twilight, though it may have been due to the fact that I was sleep deprived on a 13 hour plane ride and I’d been with Victoria and Molly telling me how great it was for the past 16 days. Now I am faced with this: Did I really like Twilight, or was I brainwashed? Or was I just jealous of Bella and wanted my boyfriend to be like Edward? Yeah I think it’s the last one. Haha.

53- Ahhh, so guilty. I tell you guys things I don’t know myself.

Here’s one that I do know all to well however:
Ahhh my poor dear leggies hurrrrt. I had hockey last night from 8:40 to 10 and again this morning from 9 to 10:30, so I spent about 9 hors at home, 8 1/2 of those sleeping. Ahh tired.

…Even though, if my dad had let me, I probably would have stayed on later at todays, with the U14s practice. Coach said me, Bre, and L could if we wanted, but dad said no. Even though tryouts are sooon… eep.
Heh, we stayed on for an extra hour once, when none of the U14s showed up. Bad them… me and Bre took turns shooting the puck towards the net and L would try to tip it in, but me and Bre were counting points each time we hit Lauren. 1 pint body, 2 points head. :D I got a half point for hitting her in the head, and Bre didn’t it her at all (L’s pretty good about getting out of the way, haha). Later she cjecked her into the boards though, and L fell and was complaining so we said it was 2 points. Good times… I wasn’t as sore then.

Also, I think my first [homeroom] class is in the freshman building, because it’s German I. Unless the freshmen come to the main building. Gosh I hope so! My schedule is as follows:

    First Semester:
    1. German I
    2/3. Honours Prob & Stats
    4. Lunch
    5/6. Honours Engineering I ♥♥♥
    7. AP English

    Second Semester:

    2/3. Honours German II
    4. Lunch
    5/6. Honours Engineering II ♥♥♥
    7. AP English

Yesterday I went to the Discovery Place museum in Charlotte, and they had the most awesome earrings and necklaces and bracelets in their gift shop. Turns out that they are made by women in Monteverde using seeds (gathered in a sustainable way), glass beads, and stones. I got this gorgeous pair of earrings with some large brown seeds (they have an even darker brown patch in the middle- wonder what species?) and some really brightly-colored glass beads, plus a somewhat matching bracelet. All the jewelry pieces are different. It’s all part of a fair-trade agreement so the women can get a secondary source of income to help support their families. I wish I could give the link to the site… just type in ‘women of the cloud forest’ on Google. It should get you to the page eventually.

Hey maybe I should have said this earlier, but I thought you all should know, there’s a meteor shower tonight, 9 PM local time!

I got this info in an e-mail:

August Meteor Shower Will Be ‘A Great Show’

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a great show this year, peaking in mid-August with a display of dozens of shooting stars each hour.

The Moon will be out of the way, leaving dark skies for good viewing as Earth plunges through an ancient stream of comet debris. Little bits, most no larger than sand grains, will vaporize in Earth’s atmosphere, creating sometimes-dramatic “shooting stars.”

“It’s going to be a great show,” said Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. “The Moon is new on August 12, which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors.”

    How many?

This year the Perseid meteor shower could deliver one or two visible streaks every minute during peak times, Cooke said in a statement yesterday. Urban skywatchers will see fewer due to local light pollution.

The meteors in this shower all appear to emanate from the constellation Perseus. The best times to watch will be late night Aug. 12 through dawn Aug. 13.

“The August Perseids are among the strongest of the readily observed annual meteor showers, and at maximum activity nominally yield 90 or 100 meteors per hour,” said Joe Rao, SPACE.com’s Skywatching columnist. “However, observers with exceptional skies often record even larger numbers.”

    Observing tips

To see the show, one need only find a comfortable spot with a clear view of the northeast horizon, away from local lights. A dark rural location is best. Lie back on a blanket or lounge chair and scan the entire sky. In the late evening, starting around 9 p.m. local time, sharp-eyed observers might see “earthgrazing” meteors that skim the northeast horizon.

“Earthgrazers are long, slow and colorful,” Cooke said. “They are among the most beautiful of meteors.” But don’t expect more than a handful in an hour, he said.

Later and during the overnight hours, the shooting stars will be higher in the sky as Perseus rises. Some skywatchers enjoy counting the number of meteors they see per minute, per hour or during a 15-minute interval and comparing notes.

Telescopes and binoculars are no help, as the meteors move too swiftly and are best observed with the naked eye.

The cosmic rivers of debris have been laid down for millennia by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which passes through the inner solar system every 130 years. Perseid meteoroids are exceptionally fast, entering Earth’s atmosphere at roughly 133,200 mph (60 kilometers per second) relative to the planet, slamming into the air like bugs hitting a windshield

So I stepped outside right after posting, to try to catch a glimpse of some of the earthgrazers. I was at the end of the driveway for an hour maybe, and I saw one. It was out of the corner of my eye though, so I couldn’t be sure. But it was very bright. Later I went back out and looked over the whole sky. With those predictions of “one per minute”, you’d think I’d have seen one, but I didn’t.

104- my backyard opens up on a flood plain, so we have raccoons and skunks and possums and armadillos fairly regularly. And mom once saw a mountain lion in the floodplain. And we get coyotes and deer also. Haven’t had wild hogs in a while, though. and tons of snakes.

Last night at about 12:30 my mom and I drove around to watch the Meteor shower, and the sky was flashing constantly. Once we got to a clear area without so many trees, we saw lots of lighting, and we thought it was part of the meteor shower. But then the wind started blowing furiously, and so we went home. On the way a sign blew over right in front of us, and almost fell on our car. Once we got home we found out there was a severe T-storm warning, so now we dont know if we saw the meteor shower, the storm, or both. Plus there was alot of smog and clouds in the way. But anyway, I know I saw at least one earthgrazer, maybe two.

Yes, I’m back, if only for long enough to tell you about my Grand Adventure that kept me up till three in the morning. (That’s not the reason I’m back, but it’s probably all I’ll have time to say.)

Okay, so yesterday we were on our way to the City, and everything was going smoothly. We were going to arrive at my uncles house by eleven, get up early in the morning to go fishing, etc. Then there was this huge noise, and when we pulled over to the side of the road, it was revealed that our tire had lost its cap. And it was the spare. But there was still a little bit of air in it, and we were on the highway, so there was nothing to do but keep driving on the mostly airless tire. Which exploded before we had gone two feet. So we rolled over a mile on the steel rim to the nearest exit, which, just our luck, had nowhere to park for a half mile or so. Eventually we stopped in a huge empty parking lot that we found, next to a tiny little espresso shop with a purple neon sign. Which was closed, unfortunately. Miraculously, the rim that we had rode a mile and half on still looked perfectly sound. So wed called a tow truck, and had my grandparents come and pick us and the boat and our luggage up, and then of course we had to eat dinner with them, even though it was 11:30 and far too late to eat dinner. We didn’t get to my uncles house until two, and then stayed up even later playing with his roommate’s cats and stuff like that. So much for fishing at four thirty. I only woke up when I did because voices in my dream were telling me it was nine o’clock and I had to get up. Which it was.

So that is my Grand Adventure, minus some small details. On another note, they have a lot of the H2G2 books here, which I haven’t read yet and most likely won’t, since I have Titus Groan and it’s an exciting part. So I don’t know why I bothered saying that.

I got a haircut today. It was just a trim, but now it looks so short! But much neater. I had a lot of dead ends, apparently.
My toenails are now painted a lovely purple shade called “Catherine the Grape”. It’s from some brand’s Russian collection. Such clever names they come up with. “Kreme de la Kremlin”. “Boris and Natsha”. “An Affair in Red Square”. “St. Petersburgundy”. “Moscow Mauve”. “Russian Navy”. Well, I am now going on a diet and start excerising more to prepare for PE this year. The highschool PE teacher is apparently merciless and I’m not very athletic. I must say that I’m not too worried about the exam at the end of the class except for one of the sections. Jump roping. Jump roping drives me CRAZY! I can jump, and I can swing a rope, but I just can’t seem to get the hamg of doing it at the same time! I can only do a good jump when a think REALLY hard about it. One of the reasons that I’m happy about the rain is that it will help the whole environment. We haven’t had rain in months, literally, so the land around here is parched. The creek that runs through our town has slowed to a trickle. The trees are losing their leaves early do to the heat. There have even been talk of water rashioning in our town. And, my garden is dieing. Rain ,will hopefully help solve a lot of these problems. That’s why I’m so happy.

It rained yesterday. During marching band. The first time we went inside. The second time we kept marching, we were in the middle of going all the way through the first song for the first time. Later it stormed and the power went out. Fun. Today we went to 4H judging(I got in 4H because of the lego robotics team and own no animals) for the county fair and my duct tape dress(which I seem to have entered) got a blue ribbon. Not like there were any other duct tape objects to compare it to, or any real standard like there was for sewing, which took up the rest of the category.
re: mice/mouses/touchpads : I’m quite used to using the red dot found on IBM ThinkPads (and occasionally the blue center scroll-down button) to navigate my computer. Our family is crazy about them, so we have feeders, bird houses, etc. We know the names of all our birds and if we ever see a new one, we fratically search in all of our bird books to find out what species it is. I think that my favorite of alll our birds is the phoebe. Every spring, it comes back from its migration and makes a nest over our front door. The birds are amazing because they catch insects to eat midair! They always perch on top of our bird feeders so they can easily take off after a bug. You can tell when they are about to fly because they start bobbing their tail up and down. They are so CUTE!
