August? Blog-ust

MuseBlog came into being four years ago this month. To celebrate our anniversary, we’re dedicating this month’s Random Thread to our beloved blog itself. As August passes, we’ll cycle through a gallimaufry of images from threads gone by.

Now playing: “July Jam” was the theme for Lady B.’s first Random thread image.

In February 2007, Lady Bunniful was a Photoshop newbie. What better way to learn her way around than to create a valentine for MuseBlog?
The Muse Academy seal, of course.
Another early experiment, the Kokopollihedron became the flag of Museica. From August 2006.
A hot pink salute to the D.C. metro, from January 2007.
From April 2006, the bunny variations that gave Lady Bunniful her name.
To mark “GAPA Appreciation Day,” we give you the “DAPAs” from DisneyBlog, April 2008.

(Users’ Manual: Obey The Rules. Consult The Guide. Have fun!)

Did anyone read the comic “Brewster Rockit: Space Guy!” today? I think it applies to us:

    Characters:
    – Agent X is a CIA agent leading a civilian tour around the ship, has convinced them there are no aliens
    – Brewster is the captain who is a moron more or less but funny
    – Tour does not believe in aliens

    Agent X: *showing tour something*
Brewster(yelling): Agent X! Twelve crewmen are hurt and C-deck is being destroyed by photon torpedoes! This looks liek the work of space squids!
    Tour: *stares*
    Agent X: *ahem*
    Brewster: I mean… uhh… mice.

Ah, GAPA apreciation day! Thank-you GAPAs.

    *is back in Canada*

One of the things that struck me about the USofA was the size of the people. There are a lot of really large people south of the border. I knew there was high obesity rates in the USofA but I was not expecting it to be quite so aparent. Also: the heat. Washington DC was SO hot. Maybe it’s just because I’m from the land of igloos and polar bears, but I cannot imagine having to wear a suit to work in the summer in DC. I would die in a pool of my own sweat. Beside the heat, I love DC. I want to go back soon.

You don’t have to tell me about the size of people here. I live in the US! My mom worked with an anthropologist once, and he said that, because America is a relatively young country, its inhabitants act like teenagers, going crazy, because we haven’t yet developed a better way of living.

Anyway, yesterday was the last day of Pirates of Penzance. It was better than the first night, at least, and it came together pretty well. Better than I thought it was going to, anyway. :) The cast party was at some rich person’s house with a pool, a hot tub, and a water slide longer than the entirety of my house.

Also, I had a dream about MuseBlog.

I almost finished my dress yesterday! I need to stitch it up the back, put in a zipper, hem, put snaps on the sleeves, and grade and overcast the seams. But it definitely resembles a dress. I’m particularly proud of the sleeves. The fabric’s still a bit stiff but I imagine it”ll soften up after it’s been worn and washed a couple of times.

Happy Birthday, MuseBlog! GAPAs, you are amazing.

Marching Band camp starts on Monday, as does soccer practice. I’m slightly excited and more-than-slightly nervous. I mean, I’m already not extraordinarily good with people, but when you factor in that many of them are older and bigger, well, that is when I begin to do stupid things, such as laugh hysterically at basically nothing for ten minutes, or babble on incoherently (‘coherent’ is my new favorite word) about the birds. Oh, well. There’ll be freshmen like me who are, admittedly, better at hiding their scared feelings, but probably just as freaked out as me.

    • Thanks, Kiga. These were actually created in CorelDRAW, which is a vector program that works somewhat differently from Photoshop, although these days both types of programs overlap considerably. I was trying to learn some new techniques, used the HPB graphic as an experimental vehicle, and sent the results to Robert, who posted them on the blog. That was how I earned the title Lady Bunniful.

41- It is, a bit, but no worries! We will soon fill you in, because we’re all just musers here! :) The bunnies were born in the mail pages of Muse, before I started subscribing (so over 5 years ago), anyways, they came out of the great Cat vs. Dog war. After that the Editors decided to cover up any requests for a dog issue of muse or a cat issue of muse with hot pink bunnies. Thus were born the HPBs. I believe Paul Baker wrote an article about them once…. but I’m not going to dig it up. *lazy* I hope I answered your question.

It means instinctively constructing rules for which floor tiles it’s okay to step on and then walking funny ever after. Sorry, I haven’t been on in a while. I was on vacation in the US for two months. It really tops the Odd Scale if you have to go on holiday to visit your own house.
I think I’ve had my share of small people. I spent, in total a month baby sitting persons under five years old. The first time they babble about their stuffed animals, it’s cute. The six thousand, four hundredth, and eighty-ninth time, it’s just plain irritating. And you would not believe how much drool I mopped up. Not counting the baby vomit and the blobs of mashed carrots that somehow flew 20 feet from the table onto the television in the living room.

81~ Thanks! I’ll be leaving Friday (!!!!!!!) for home, it’ll be nice to be back, but so different. when we were giving tours in Port Colborne (our last stop) people would come below and wrinkle up their noses saying how “unplesant” it must be to stay down there on the ship, and I’d answer that it wasn’t, since it was home. Sometime when I was saying that I realized just how true that really is, the ship feels like home. Every line, plank, hammock, door, it’s gotten to be so familiar this month that it’s odd to think about leaving and going to live somewhere else. Most strange, and rather depressing.
I woke up early this morning and couldn’t go back to sleep, even though we were allowed to sleep in. I just stayed there in my hammock for a few hours and tried to imagine waking up at home, late like I usually do, and it was so hard. *sigh* Scarred for life, it seems…..

Have any of you ever seen the book/activity set thingy called Treasure Hunter? It’s basically a book attached to the outside of a fiendish cardboard-and-plastic box that can only be opened when the right combination of symbols is set on a dial on the box’s surface. To find the right combination, you have to read the book and solve a series of increasingly harder puzzles that appear in the story.

(In the story, inside of the box is the object everybody wants to get, a journal detailing the locations of various treasures around the world.)

So I found this book/set at work during lunch and spent about an hour on the combination (it was a slow day, and I’d already finished everything my boss wanted me to do.) I FINALLY got it open and enjoyed the extra activities and journal inside.

Now, on the inside, there were instructions on how to reprogram the lock to open to a DIFFERENT combination, which I did. Then I wrote a note explaining what I’d done and wrote some riddles in Pigpen code (I included a code key) giving the correct symbols for my new combination, saying it was to protect the journal from the bad guy in the story.

Before I locked the box again, I left a sticky note inside congratuating the reader on opening the box and told them to write their name and the date they solved the puzzle in the back of the journal.

Hm, I think I’ll attempt to give a summary of my trip, which will either make me feel better or make me cry. I don’t even know where to begin…

Before we even came aboard, we started singing shanties, and we didn’t really stop. Ever. When we finally did come aboard (after about three shanties), we were divided into four watches: A (which was me), B, C, and Apprentice. We got a tour of the ship and got to pick bunks, then we set sail (though there really wasn’t much wind), then we got an even more intensive tour. This took some time, and by the time it was done, we had to strike sail, anchor and eat dinner. I can’t remember for the life of me what was for dinner, but afterwards we washed dishes, which was rather cold and wet since we had to wash them in salt water, but not very cold because it was so sunny. Then there was the evening program, which consisted of talking about resources and plankton, and we went to bed. At about 2 AM I was woken up for anchor watch and sat around on deck feeling cold and talking (in a whisper) about Australia. Then I went back to bed. I woke up at seven to singing. One thing about the Adventuress: they sing a lot. Not just shanties, we get sung to at bedtime and in the morning. Which is quite nice. So we got up, and had breakfast, and after breakfast we had chores. My watch washed the deck. :D It was fun.

    More later.

I could describe the whole thing in detail, but I’d be boring you, so I won’t.
Anyway, the whole social thing was almost funner than the making-stuff part. We all talked all the time we did stuff, I helped Jamal strip the bark off his stick after he still hadn’t gotten all of it off after three hours–his stick was made of some kind of insanely hard-to-strip wood–Ailton teased my sister the whole time about the berimbau she made being really his (though why he wanted hers, I don’t know–he made an insanely nice one with the wood burner, it had his name and capoeira name and our group’s name and our mestres’ names and our instructor’s name and capoeira name on it, and the gourd had the outline of Africa and all kinds of decorations on it), and in the evening we had a potluck-cookout-type-thing and hung up a projector screen and watched old capoeira videos from when Joe was a blue cord, and then really old capoeira videos from when Mestre P was a white cord, and then our batizado video from last year, and then we had to leave, but everyone else presumably kept watching. I’ve been quite upset lately because the whole summer it RAINED. And winter stinks. I get all moody because there’s no light, and my mom always keeps the house cold. At least I went camping with my friend, in between the ever-present rain. Then it came back, covered in millet seeds (it got into our bird seed I guess) and ran up the quilt to sit on our knees. And we were kind of freaked out, because normal mice don’t do that. So we put it down, and it sat on the carpet and ran around and got into the plastic bag with all our movies in it. So we caught it in a jar and put it out. I don’t think it can have been a healthy mouse, or it wouldn’t have been so bold. But it didn’t look sick. Perhaps it was a woodland mouse who didn’t know to be afraid of humans, or something?

So I guess I should tell you guys some things that happened in my long absence:
    1) I got my driver’s license in December.
    2) My parents bought a car for me and my brother to share, but since my brother doesn’t have his license, the car is essentially mine.
    3) Said car is an aqua Toyota Corolla (with a really good sound system!) named Medvedev.
    4) I decided that I’m going to major in film in college (with the ultimate goal of becoming a director/screenwriter).
    5) I tried to do way too much during my junior year.
    6) I went to France in February!

There’s more, but these are the main things. I can elaborate on some of these points if you want.

On the application it does ask how far you can swim, I think 100 yards was the least amount given, but I can’t remember. Something like that I think.

Our practice field was very far away from the dorms and indoor practice area, so we took a bus there. I think they leveled the “road” with a dump truck or something, because it was really bumpy. By luck, we happened to have an incredibly cool bus driver, who instead of driving really slow along the offroad part took it at a decent clip so that it was like an amusement park ride. A couple of clarinets chose a different thing to imagine the bus was being ‘attacked’ by for each ride (4x/day). And on the last ride back, it was dark out and some people were singing the theme to Mars and a mello was chanting “doitagaindoitagaindoitagain” at top speed with the most incredible articulation I have ever heard and we went around a circular part of the road a bunch of times and it was all just fantastic and it is at moments like that that all the marching and running and sweating and aching feet and waking up at six fifteen am for a week and sitting through football games is worth it and I love being in marching band.

Kind of a random thought, but it’s very weird to think about surnames that are very famous now, like Disney or Einstein, and realize that all the ancestors of the people who made them famous had that name, too, and they didn’t consider it any different from Smith or Jones.

First day of school is over and done with. Lucky me, I get to start the day with AP U.S. History and AP Language and Composition. I already have an essay due tomorrow (which I am putting off for a bit). Also on my schedule are physics, Honors Spanish IV, Latin III, precalculus, forensics, and a computer programming class, in no particular order. It appears that long gone are the days of getting As without trying very hard.

    Dang.

I’m also taking those APs! And I still have two books to finish, three assignments to do (2 for history and 1 for English), AND a History test to study for, AND SCHOOL HASN’T EVEN STARTED YET!!! Sorry. I think it might have been better to do History all in 1 year instead of 1 1/2. Must go and do my work now! Cheerio! *stalks off*

That last sentence scared me, but that’s not very soon, I’m only going into sixth grade, and school doesn’t start until September 8th. However, I’m starting to miss my friends, and the Science Olympiad team. And maybe math homework. Maybe.

For the book? We’re using…uh…Out of Many. And I’m not sure about the programming class. I’ve taken a different programming class with the same teacher, and he’s insane. I don’t mean your normal everyday “insane” teacher. Actual insanity. I once asked him how I would print out a receipt (I made a cash register program for my final project) and he launched into an obtuse metaphor about him giving me money and telling me to build a birdhouse. Then he’d say it wasn’t any good, and give me more money. Then he’d say that one wasn’t any good. “Do you know what I’m trying to get across here?” I could only nod and give up. That receipt was to remain virtual forever. One my friend’s dad had this teacher for one of their classes decades ago, and he said that the teacher looked and acted exactly the same as in the ’80s.

But APUSH should be awesome. I had the same teacher for American History freshman year, and he rocks. Granted, the class is going to be very hard, as it’s AP (obviously), but still awesome. It won’t count for dual enrollment, though, unless I get a qualifying grade on the AP test, so that stinks. But hopefully I’ll be able to go to D.C. with the class in October. The last time I was there our tour of the capitol was cancelled on occasion of Reagan’s funeral procession (which was amazing).

If you haven’t figured it out, I’ve finished the essay. It was only 400-500 words, but I wanted it to be good. And I succeeded: 500 words exactly.

And now onto making a list of ways ancient Rome has affected Western civilization.

I’ve been thinking quite a lot about how I can’t wait to start freshman year in high school. I’m really looking forward to the social aspects of high school, which of course will be the last thing on my mind once actual learning commences. I’m not looking forward to Civics because freshmen don’t have the option to take Honors courses for that. My friend is just going straight to AP U.S. History, because she’s doing the Civics course over the summer, but I got too lazy to ask for a textbook.

Marching Band is awesome! We get to go to Valley Fair tomorrow (the Minnesota amusement park) and stay there after the parade and goof off in the park.

I’m doing driver’s ed, which isn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but it’s still sitting for three hours while intermittently watching funny driving videos with terrible acting.

We bought our tickets in advance, from NY to Moscow, from Moscow to St. Petersburg, from St. Petersburg to Moscow, from Moscow to NY.
    So far so good.
Only, after returning to Moscow from Peter, my mom and I got on a train that would take us to my grandparents’ town, while my dad flew back to NY.
    Ok. Fine.
Except, when my mom and I returned to Moscow again (by train) a week later, the airport people said that “the route was disrupted” so for some reason, we now had no tickets, no refund, and we had to buy new seats at a higher price. *rants and stomps around*
