Life, the universe, pies, hot-pink bunnies, world domination, and everything
Since I was cursed by getting the last post on the other thread which no one will read, I will get first post by saying that EVERYONE SHOULD COME HERE AND POST AT THE SOLSTICE MINUTE. Thank you.
I wrote this weird little one-off for a collaborative fan-fic project thingy on another site, with all original characters, not much action and lots of technical jargon… and everybody was talking about how much they loved it!
Also, I just took my APUSH regents exam, so I’m done with 11th grade!
Yay! How ’bout posting the one-off on Books in Progress? I want see!
Sure thing, although I’ll probably have to include some backstory so you guys understand what the heck the characters are talking about!
Okay, it’s up.
I have had similar experiences. The writing people love most is the stuff I churn out on the spur of the moment. A character I came up with in a five-minute QuickWrite is now considered my iconic work in Writer’s Club.
My best writting is always stuff I just sit down and do, no thinking, no planning, just letting whatever’s in me that wants out onto paper.
Same here, Jade! Teachers have been on my case ever since first grade because I never do the brainstorming/planning sheets they give out. I just have to write, not sit there and plan.
Know what? I’m going to do that as soon as I eat breakfast. You people have inspired me.
The best time for creative writing is early in the morning, right when you’ve woken up. Or so I’ve heard.
I write best very very late at night. Some of it depends on the person.
i write best early in the morning, right before i go to sleep
I love waking up at about six thirty, and sitting on my bed with my laptop and writing. It’s like I have a couple hours all to myself.
I use them, I just don’t pay any attention a to them after I’ve finished them.
Ditto. I hate planning sheets.
In defense of the outline, you really can’t write an academic paper over 5 pages without one. Then they’re fantastic! Remember this.
Otherwise though, eh.
not true though, as long as you have a good thesis worked out your introductory paragraph can serve as your “planning sheet.” the little handouts they give are full of fail
DITTO!
Daisy: I also. ^_^ *is extremely ready fangirl for pretty much anything if it involves cute zombies* [snip snippety-snip deviantART snip] (It would be amusing if the GAPAs snipped that self-snip…. XD)
Two main things:
1) Toy Story 3. Amazing. Yes, I cried. Pixar movies can always do that to me, but this one really hit home, especially since I’m moving towards college myself in just a couple of years. It was just fantastic. Hilarious, moving–I think this is the only Third Movie In A Series that I’ve ever seen that I’ve had nothing bad to say about.
2) I’m going on vacation with my family for a week, and I don’t think I’ll have internet for most of it, so I’ll see you guys in a week!
Ehhh… I had several friends invite me to go see Toy Story, but the think is, talking dolls scare me. I mean, seriously. These dolls not only talk, they go places and do things! IT’S SO FREAKY, DUDE.
Anyway.
Have fun on vacation!
i’ve been thinking about this and i wonder if anyone here could give me some input. i’ve been trying to think of some way to make what i write more visible. i’ve tried entering contests locally and otherwise but i don’t think that’s the way to go. publishing isn’t practical or likely. i just want people to be able to read some of the things i write. but especially with poetry i feel like it’s so terribly self-absorbed and presumptuous to just throw it out there, or to ask someone to read it. i can’t think of a legitimate medium through which to communicate, i guess. blegh.
Ooh, hat’s very tough. Uh…I would ask your friends to read it so they can give you crits and compliments, and if they think it’s good, to pass it on. That way, you can get advice and people can still read your story or poetry. I have the same problem, only I’m just too shy to let people read my stuff.
You could find some print publications that accept and print written work. Maybe a newspaper, either general or school? I’m sure there’s a semi-underground “art” or “creative” scene where you live that prints ‘zines full of poetry and other writings. Basically, you just have to do some aggressive poetry-whoring.
Addendum: snoop around “hipster”-style coffee shops to find posters about said ‘zines.
i tend to think of where i live as a cultural deadzone but you’re right, there has to be SOMETHING i can do…our school literary magazine is online this year and i sent something to that, hopefully there will be something at college as well (oh jeez that sounds crazy…)
Cicada publishes poetry sometimes?
And there are plenty of poetry contests! I won one two years ago; in fifth grade.
axa – I don’t know if you were ever subscribed to the cricket / cicada magazines but cicada publishes teen work. They’ve also got their online thing (the slam? something like that) where you can post, get feedback, etc.
Good idea! Also, maybe Grady and/or POSOC know of some forums.
i’m not too big on the slam….but i gave their magazine submissions section a better look than i had previously, that seems pretty promising. thanks lizzie
School is out! I’m so glad…I’m on my way to the Cape for Father’s Day and then off on my road trip with my mother on Monday. ‘Twill be fun.
*wanders off singing I’m So Tired*
Last night I dreamed that Fiddler and Ebeth were writing VERY NAUGHTY THINGS on the R&R thread, and I was rather surprised the GAPAs had moderated them. I think it was Fiddler and Ebeth, anyway–I can’t precisely recall. I think they may have been talking to either Ducky or Starr, as well. And I was reading it all on a weird iPod Touch app that was… sorta like the inside of a subway train? Along the top, where various adverts usually reside, were the Recent Comments. It was all very strange.
That… isn’t too far-fetched… Though Fiddler wasn’t in that conversation, I don’t think. *self-snips reference to off-blog contact*
Well, that was sort of what happened on one of the Kokon threads. It was the first time I heard one of the GAPAs use the word “kokonniptions.”
Wonder if it will be the last…. By the way, POSOC, did you ever get a look at the May/June Muse? (I know you said you no longer subscribe.) The Q&A was an answer to a question you asked.
I never did. Our library doesn’t carry it.
GAPAs, could I transcribe the Q&A for POSOC? If you didn’t want it posted online, maybe I could email the transcription to the to you and you could then pass it on to POSOC?
Piggy,
We and Muse share the rights to republish the material, so I can authorize you to transcribe it and publish it on the blog. By all means, go ahead.
Hurrah!
i love it when i’m in peoples’ dreams
fern and i are VERY NAUGHTY PEOPLE. sometimes. she is sailing away from me now though my friends and family are bad at doing super-spontaneous three-hour road trips to see my friends from the internet.
although that reminds me if anyone wants to kokon in pittsburgh i will be there for a bit next month! and can introduce you to my Totally Awesome Friend who is going to the art institute and doesn’t know anybody in pittsburgh yet. snip away if this is too much info but i believe it’s sufficiently vague? how are kokons planned without info-revealing? i don’t even know, don’t mind me i haven’t slept much
been reading scott pilgrim though. FANTASTIC. love it. reminds me a bit of questionable content (the webcomic, not content which is questionable). very funny.
*is happy I was in someone’s dream*
And is it just me, or does it seem like Ducky and I always seem to be mentioned together here? Perhaps we are quite similar…. :/
Perhaps…
Yeah, I sometimes get you two mixed up, it’s strange. Did you two join around the same time?
I’m pretty sure Ducky joined before Starr. But my convoluted time sense might be confusing me.
A couple of weeks before, I think.
I’m posting this from my new MacBook! Setting everything up was pretty crazy (I don’t think I’ve ever had to enter my name, phone number and address so many times…) but it didn’t take terribly long.
I’m not really sure how much I like Safari, because the browser doesn’t fill the screen, and there’s no way (That I can see) to have separate tabs. I like the spell-checking feature, but as there doesn’t seem to be any way to right-click, I don’t know how to get suggestions for the CORRECT spelling.
Still, it seems pretty solid.
Also, apparently in conjunction with Toy Story 3, they’ve touched up the “Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs” from when the toy Buzz was on the ISS with some video and animations, and put those on the NASA site, which I like.
Screaming “To Infinity, and Beyond!” right after “Go at throttle up.” actually DOES make it less scary. (Especially when you consider that both can be taken to mean the same thing.)
For a Mac, hit (command t) for a new tab (no parentheses).
What about right-clicking? I see I can cut and paste with the same letter commands by using “command” in place of “control”.
I think you do command+click.
What about getting suggestions from the spell-checker?
Control+click. I love that feature.
To enable right clicking on your Mac, go to system preferences, go to track pad, select “secondary click” aka right click. After that, with two fingers on the track pad, hitting the “click” will be right clicking.
THANKS! You’re a life-saver!
ooh, thanks. Any more mac tips for those of us confused by our computers and a bit confused why exactly we bought a mac in the first place?
I don’t have any right off the top of my head, but if you know of something in particular about your Mac that is causing confusion, I might be able to help out….
Oh, and Lady B. was close with her suggestion of command+click. A bit of experimentation has determined that control+click can be used for right clicking, if any of you find that easier than two fingers on the track pad +click.
command-click opens the link in a new tab, control-click rightclicks.
Ah. I’m used to Adobe tutorials and such, and most of the time “command” is the substitute for “control” so I didn’t remember there was a control key, too (not having spent more than a few hours on a Mac).
You can scroll up/down if you swipe up/down with two fingers on the trackpad, it’s much easier than scrolling. It might not be automatically set up, you might have to tinker with the settings.
You can set up right click on the trackpad:
System Preferences -> Trackpad -> Secondary Click, and set it to bottom right corner.
I currently love the time travel thread.
Oh my gosh, what happened to my body? I fell asleep on the couch watching the Red Sox and had this weird dream about going to California for History Day because I answered some trivia questions right that I think Fishy was in, and he was definitely in my dream this morning too but I can’t remember that.
Owww. I’m in pain. Also…I think I missed my chance to go to the concert with Pseudonym, Keiffer, Enc, AM, Beetles, and Their Muserly Friend…I heard Nym leave but then I could barely move my lips let alone walk…
Oww.
Seriously, say your goodbyes to me now.
Oh no, Magnolia! *sends magical healing powers to remedy your pain*
…I wasn’t able to come to the concert. *sits at home all alone like she has no life* (Oh, wait, I don’t! Haha!) *chucks stuffed HPB at wall* *feels better* *falls asleep*
Ow…
*hugs* *chamomile tea*
Feel better!
GAPAs, I believe I posted something on Part One of the Random Thread late yesterday or earlier this week (bad short term memory, I can’t remember which of the two times I got short Internet access this last week I went on MB) but it doesn’t appear to be there. How curious. It doesn’t seem like anything I did on the hotel Wifi actually went through though, so maybe it just wasn’t working. *curses Internet access* It was acting up the whole time, so I’m not surprised though.
Anyway, I had a lovely (but very busy) week…I visited lots of family friends, (some of which we haven’t seen in a long time), saw the newest version of Karate Kid, (although now I wish I could see the older version), ate tons of fast food, and went swimming several times including once in a waterpark. Now I have so much time on my hands! It’s a great feeling compared to before when everything was rush-rush-rush. I’m exhausted, though, and just want to settle down and sleep.
Anyway, I’m off to catch up on the other threads that I missed….
261, Cat’s Eye, previous thread –
When I first read that post, I thought it said “I FEEL LIKE A LOBSTER DYING FROM POT”. Then I read it again, thinking “Why is the lobster steaming while doing drugs?” and realized how stupid I am.
I am rolling on the floor laughing.
That, my friend, is grade-A comedy.
Who’s Justin Bieber?
Seriously, who the cake is he?
A ten-year-old girl.
A recently deceased ten-year-old girl.
You really don’t know? He’s a super-popular singer ( at least among some squealy preteens ) who, yes, sounds like a ten-year-old girl.
Yeah, I honestly didn’t know; I’ve never heard any of his music. Two girls in my gymnastics class were chattering.
You really don’t need to know. As I suggested to my friend Erin, save your time and look up Story Musgrave instead.
Well, at this rate, people are going to think of me as “the sci-fi nut” instead of “the freaky maths nerd”. What I’ve done so far this weekend:
Saturday:
Go to the mall with my friends like any normal girl would do, even though we’re the nerd group, there’s only about 2 people there who dropped their languages from Year 8, and we almost never go out on weekends.
Go home. Go on the computer. Go on MB. Read webcomics. Do what would be procrastination if I had anything I should be doing. Read Star Trek slash fanfics because D recommended them to me. Drool. Be disgusted. Drool some more. (This is getting more worrying…)
Decide to watch a movie. I’ve got the LOTR movies, some Audrey Hepburn movies, some Shakespeare movies, and who knows what else lying around unwatched, but I go for Star Wars. Get excited about Darth Vader. And because I’d just been reading weird Star Trek fanfics and obsessing about Doctor Who, I kept thinking about Vulcans and Daleks.
Sunday:
Go on the computer and drool over Star Trek fanfics again. Get annoyed that most of the pairings are between guys because there’s 2 female characters(Amanda and Uhura, I’m talking about the new ST) and they can’t be paired with each other because that would be disturbing even for a fanfic. Spock’s mother with his girlfriend? No way. Try to think of as many ST plotholes as possible.
Plan to watch Doctor Who even though the episodes you’ve seen are getting progressively worse. (Now I’ve said that, i’ll probably like tonight’s one.)
2:30 AM.
Two people are on this blog.
One of them is me.
…
[/haiku]
Highly illogical as it is, I’m still up and on MB. Only 21 minutes after the solstice!
You’re 24 hours early.
Very illogical, then.
11) It seems that I’m not the only one having odd dreams. Last night (IN MY DREAM), somehow I became impregnated, and then went into labor. Thank God I woke up before…. I don’t even know. Probably one of the weirdest dreams I’ve ever had, if not the weirdest, and that’s saying something.
I’m assuming you’re male from your tone.
I have no idea about thanks for all the fish’s gender, but believe me, as a girl, it is really weird and freaky to dream that you’re pregnant. Not to mention scary.
Fishy is male.
Uhh…that’s really weird.
Justin Bieber sounds like she’s high. I hope she never achieves a higher level of stardom than she has already, the little twerp. As far as I’m concerned, she never existed and never will. Baby, baby, baaaaabyeeeee!
18) ………. I hope these dreams don’t mean things.
(hewasactuallybeingsatiricaljustinbieberisaboy)
I’ve always had my doubts, though. O.o
I want to SQUASH him.
I want to SQUASH PIES in his face until he makes SENSE. *prepare for rant!*
I mean, half his songs are whining about some girl! And the other half is just “Baby, baby, baby”!! God, I just want to grjeknsjfksd his howeifh!!!! This is like twilight. id you know he’s number 7 or 8 on Google’s Top Ten WomenList???
Win. ( about the Google thing )
Seconded.
yes. A 16 boy who doesn’t appear to have hit puberty yet. Which is sort of unusual, but could be normal I suppose. When he does (and his voice changes), his carrer is, in all probability, over. Thus I can’t help but have doubts to weather or not he is a castraghti (spelled wrong. If you know what I mean, great. If not, I feel a bit sorry for Justin Bieber and so will not explain)…..but I do feel sorry for him, esp. in that case
The singular is castrato. The More You Know…
And now I’m going to stop because this conversation is already getting less work safe.
Does anyone have experience with eye infections? Particularly ones that turn your entire sclera red and turn the areas near the tear ducts purple? It also kind of feels like several needles stabbing the cornea every time you blink.
Curse the eye doctors for not being open on Sunday.
…Ow. Sympathies. Ow. Just… ow.
*hugs* Thanks. At least I can open it!
What is good in life?
To chase fireflies barefoot on dewy grass.
To climb mossy old trees by moonlight and sing Filk songs to the sky while looking at the moon with binoculars.
To lie on your back and look at the summer constellations while eating mango sorbet.
To do jigsaw puzzles of the moon by the light of an orange lava lamp.
To race down the beach at the water’s edge in the wet sand, leaving squishy ephemeral footprints.
To curl up near an opened window with a teddy bear and read about the conquest of Everest.
To go to bed knowing you have had blissful moments such as this in your day.
All I can think of are ways each of those can go horribly wrong.
Like the lava lamp exploding…
That was one, yes. There are a lot of slippery things, as well, in that list.
I saw your post in the RC before I saw KaiYves, so I, too, was only thinking of ways those could go wrong when I read it…
You are disturbed, my friend. Why mess with happiness?
Because happiness needs to be messed with!
I guess I shouldn’t have said “near an open window”. I kind of brought it on myself.
What can go wrong in life?
You can slip on the dew and break your leg.
You can fall out of the tree and break your arm.
You can choke on a lump.
You can get burned by a lava lamp explosion.
You can drown.
You can fall out the window and break your back.
You can die in a hospital, knowing your life sucks.
STOP DESTROYING THE HAPPINESS
SORRY! I’m pessimistic! Besides, it was PIGGY’S IDEA!!! *points accusing finger at Piggy*
Hahahahaha.
YAY!! AUDITIONS ARE OVER! *crosses fingers.*
Good luck!
STOP SAYING THAT! Say, ‘Break a leg!’
Sorry. BREAK A LEG
Thank you. OHMIGOSH THE PHONE JUST RANG! *dashes off* Nope. Not Theater of Ch.
Friend from vermont/NYC(she used to live here but moved) is staying for a few days! And hanging out with her all week. I’m pleasantly surprised to see that the internet can survive without my hourly attention.
Also, a few days ago I built a giant octopus named Oliver out of seasweed on my beach. I built a Loch Ness Monster type thing last year. I ran out of seaweed on this one though so the head was a bit small. I may send in pictures to the visual arts thread because before it got all dried out and torn up in Hurricane Illinois out it was pretty cool looking.
Today was great–had a sleepover last night, we woke up at 9ish
and made crepes for breakfast (with strawberry and blueberry fillings), people left, me and my friend fell back asleep until 1. Then we walked to another friend’s house, picked her up and went to lunch where another friend (who was at the sleepover but had to leave after the crepes) worked, and the food was yummy… then after talking a bit me and Out-of-town friend went back to my house and swam in the lake because it was realyl warm and nice. We just finished watching blade runner and we’re getting ready for bed. This is how summers should be.
I built a really crummy sea serpent out of seaweed when I was ten and my family went to Disney World.
I missed the summer solstice by about an hour. Oh, well.
At what time is the lunar eclipse on Saturday? In Eastern Time? It will only happen again in 18 years…
18 years? What are you talking about? Lunar eclipses happen all the time. In any case, it begins, Eastern Time, at 5:50 a.m., and has maximum eclipse at 7:40, but you can’t see the maximum eclipse in that time zone because the moon will have sunk underneath the horizon by that time.
Ah, it’s the only Saros 120 eclipse until 2028, which apparently is a type of eclipse.
A Saros cycle is a “family” of eclipses. At any time, you have several eclipse cycles running at once, and every 18 years, you’ll have similar ones that are part of the same cycle.
It’s a partial lunar eclipse. According to the NASA website I checked, it lasts from 0857 UT (Universal Time) until 1419 UT and reaches its maximum at 1138 UT. That translates into 3:57-9:19 a.m. in blog time (currently U.S. Central Daylight Time), peaking at 6:38 a.m. So you’ll have to get up early to see it before the moon sets.
KaiYves probably knows more about it.
I just invented a new extreme sport. It is called Get A Lot Of People Killed, or GALOPK for short. (The name was not my idea.) The rules are very simple. There are several relay teams competing against each other. One person, (typically the one who can live the longest without breathing) is at the far end of the course, choking on a large amount of Bingo balls. (You know, the ones that have the number and letter on them?) The rest of the team is at the other end, and the first person runs the obstacle course. (First they have to coalwalk while dodging flying razor blades and giant axe pendulums, then they have to swim a piranha infested pool of acid.) When they reach the choking person, they extract one bingo piece via CPR, taking less than ten seconds or else having flaming, boiling oil dumped on them. Then they have to take the piece back across a pit of mambas full of checking hockey players and tag the next person (before checking to see if the bingo ball is one they need), who then runs the same course, does the CPR, etc. until one team gets a bingo.
Who wants to compete? It may well be in the 2010 olympics.
I wanna be the referee!
You forgot to give me any credit. I’m the one who gave you the idea and the name!
(Totally NOT my idea for it to become so deadly.)
I’ll be a snake-wielding hockey player!
In the 2010 Olympics?
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
Typo. Should say 2012.
Ducky- But I know the GAPAs don’t like references to off-blog contact.
Jadestone- Yay!
WN- There is no referee. The game is governed by mob-rule.
((I’d like to see this become the AA official sport, just to see how everyone reacts…
Oh gods. AA stands for Antediluvian Academy, not Alcoholics Anonymous.
Just so there’s not confusion.
And why would we think that?
Because most of the blog is not on Demigods, and besides, AA is almost always used to mean Alcoholics Anonymous.
Um… how many people are on a team? You’d have to go through at least 25 to get a bingo…
No, the minimum is five.
Not sure how many people…
WAIT 12 on each team. If you use everyone on your team before getting a bingo, you have to run through it as a three legged race, with two people tied together, then it goes to three people tied together, then four, then 6, then 12, then the whole thing starts again but you do walking handstands instead of running.
But they’d all be dead long before the end.
Why do you think it’s an extreme sport? Sheesh.
You are so disturbed. I refuse to participate.
Look, the people doing this would be trained professionals. Well, the hockey players would be.
No thanks.
That sounds like even more fun than high school!
So now I have Google Chrome on my laptop, just because I’m more familiar with the interface than with Safari.
Also, I bought a jigsaw puzzle in the afternoon. It’s 200 pieces, so it’ll take a while.
Any musers in the Munich area? ‘Cause that’s where I’ll be for the next month! Though my German teacher probably wouldn’t like me meeting “strangers”…
STFP, but I had to announce my discovery of some new (to me, anyway) pages under the “What’s Here” tab. I’m kind of wondering what’s going to be under the “Links” page… more than what’s in the sidebar?
I believe those pages are for the sake of the mobile theme.
Ah. Well, with my crummy phone, I probably would have never found that out.
Greetings from the land of flickering lightbulbs! Or something of the sort. =) You already know me – I’m no newbie. But after years of visiting the blog and moving from one alias to another (each seeming individually legit), it’s time to scrap them all and simply visit as me. I know, it all sounds very mysterioso, but think of it as… a new beginning, perhaps? A restart.
I chose not to just appear as a newbie and really start over because the GAPAs, in their wise knowledge of IP addresses, would probably just figure I was alter-egoing. They’ve caught me before.
But there’s no “alter-” in this equation of egocity. Is that a word?
Gah. This is what happens when you run on 4 hours of sleep and 20 hours of wakefulness. I don’t handle caffeine well.
ANYWAYS. Hi. I’m here. Idk how long I’ll stick around. But… I’m here.
Geez I missed this place.
I’m 17. I play the cello. My life is a slight mess because I still haven’t decided where I’m going to college in the fall. Right now I’m set to attend four. *facepalm* I chose the name “Sans Orchestre” after a Gilles Apap album I just bought. I met Gilles at a music festival I just got home from – absolutely phenomenal violinist. Curses like a mad French sailor. Funny as hell.
Agh. Bed. ‘Night.
Well, welcome back. I suppose you’re going to refuse to tell us who you originally were? Bother. The only person I remember who tried to come back to the ‘blog pretending to be a newbie was… what was his name? He swore at us and impersonated other MBers. You don’t seem like him.
Would it be too much to ask what general timeframe you first came to MuseBlog in? (Then again, each of your aliases probably had different timeframes. Hurm.)
i think i pretended to be a newbie once, just for lulz. but nobody found out and i got bored.
You’re thinking of AJAR. That was my first thought, too, although I (too) wrote that off as rather unlikely, given….That Sans Orchestre sounds quite different than anything we got from AJAR.
Anyway. Welcome (back, I suppose), Sans Orchestre. We always do appreciate returners to the ‘blog….Even if it is now going to bug me who you are (were).
E2MB came back in a few different aliases. I don’t think he impersonated other MBers or swore at us, but he did leave after a while.
CELLO. Nice to see you! CELLO.
I kind of want to know who you originally were, as well.
And I also don’t handle caffeine well. I drank a bottle of iced tea at 7:00 and it is now almost midnight.
Welcome!
Please stay, you seem like you’ve got a nicely shaped head on your shoulders. And you play the ‘cello! Where are you deciding between, may I ask?
Welcome back! You know that I’m going to spend sleepless nights trying to figure out who you are now…but anyway, hi again I guess.
Some of Sans Orchestre’s previous aliases were quite prolific.
Sans Orchestre, we Administrators would like to hear more about it before you do more posting. Either add a comment to this thread, or get in touch with us by e-mail — whichever you prefer.
I am lonley

What time is it?
It’s summertime
It’s our vacation!
What time is it?
The time of our lives
School’s out! Scream and shout!
Forgive me.
Forgiven..
I just did locks of love!! Now my hair feels very odd, because it’s so short…
I’ve done that…
I’m probably not doing it again though.
My friend had hair down to her knees, but now it’s up to her neck.
Yay LBK! I did that once too, and unfortunately my hair never grew back to its original length of two-ish feet.
Ha! North Korea is out after losing 7-0 to Portugal!
Spain might not advance. Can you believe it?
Yay! My new gravatar’s showing up on my computer! I like it better than the old one.
I’m noticing a strange phenomenon with the search results.
Here is a sample of some results I found:
Random Thread: Gloriana’s Realm”>Random Thread: Gloriana’s Realm
Books”>Robert’s Time Capsule: Comic Books
Random Thread: Strange New World, Part 2″>Random Thread: Strange New World, Part 2
At this point, I’m thinking that it’s caused by a colon, but–
Books in Progress, v. 2010.1″>Books in Progress, v. 2010.1
RRR 2010
Now it appears to be caused by any punctuation; RRR 2010 is fine. But–
Quotations, v. 2010.1
Now I’m utterly confused.
We were testing a new search plug-in, but it seems to give odd results. I’ve deactivated it.
Ooh! And a pretty new visitors map! New MuseBlog shininess!
Oops. I’ll take down the visitors map. Some MBers don’t want their location revealed.
Concern jinx!
STFP, but after playing with the map for a bit, I would like to point out the concern of possibly knowing where other musebloggers live. For example, I can set the time to a very small amount of time ago, and if I knew that a museblogger active at that time lives in Colorado (random state), then I would be able to figure out the exact city they live in.
Especially considering that if this is the same map that briefly appeared in the fall before I expressed concern….I learned not long later, that if you hovered your pointer over any given dot….It told you the city. So you didn’t just have a visual, you had an exact location, which kind of defeated everything the GAPAs have ever done to keep us from posting our specific cities.
We can switch off the city labels, but it’s easier just to lose the map.
I agree, especially as even without the labels, it gives away more than I, personally, would really like.
It’s summer. Finally. Though, I can’t quite call it summer vacation, because I have to do algebra homework, read half of my AP Bio book, read half of my AP Euro book, and write an essay or three for AP Euro.
*sigh*
Does anyone else have a vegetable garden? Mine is growing quite well. I have sunflowers, bush beans, tomatoes (normal and cherry), pumpkins, zucchini, and various gourds (the funky kinds). It’s being taken over by weeds, though. I need grass clippings to put over it. (I’m a lazy gardener.)
P.S. GAPAs, the preview button isn’t working…
I had a porch garden once. Now it’s a weedhotel. What does a clairrbet sound like?
Hahaha, weed hotel! I like that metaphor. What exactly is a clairrbet?
I meant to type clairnet.
Well, what’s a clairnet?
A cross between a hairnet and a clarinet!
I meant a clarinet!
A clarinet is a mix between a flute and total awesomeness. It sounds like a wind blowing through the trees, but it can also sound like pure funk. *needs to learn how to play it*
* wanted to play trumpet for band but mom singed her up for clarinet*
I will teach you Once school starts and I have band.l promise. l mean I promise.
But that’s only if the person playing it knows what they’re doing. A beginning clarinet player can cause ear damage.
I love playing the clarinet. It’s a great instrument.
I just cracked up when I saw that.
Same here. Interesting mental picture.
Would that be like a hairnet that has a mouth piece?
Yeah, or a clarinet where if you blow into it, a hairnet bursts our the end.
Or a clarinet made of netting, with little sparkles at the intersections that twinkle when you play.
I am totally going to shove a hairnet up someone’s clarinet when band starts again…
Or a hairnet with made of tiny, interwoven clarinets.
*laughs hysterically at the mental images*
I have hairnets from ballet season, and I play the clarinet. Hm. XD
Hm, you’re right, it isn’t.
Yeah, I have summer work in English, Spanish and Science Research, and I’ll be at Yale taking classes for all of July, so I don’t know how much of a vacation it will really be.
Just spent a hour reading summaries of old Twilight Zone episodes. Very enjoyable.
I before that, I did some good reading and writing, and hopefully I can work on my puzzle, too. A very productive day!
This is a test of the preview button.
Hm. It says “Preview error”.
Testing Preview button, testing, one two three, testing.
Oh! It seems to be working again! Yay!
Anyways, I’ll be leaving for two (!!!!!) weeks for a Marine Biologist camp in Maine. So that’s where I am if you don’t hear from me for awhile. All my RPG characters are subject to PPing if needed.
o.o
Marine biology camp? I’m sooo envious… I would love to do something like that. HAVE FUN!
(Preview is still not working for me…)
Lucky! Have fun!
GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND IN MY BASEMENT
A SHARP POCKET COMPUTER
It’s 9.5 by 12.5 inches. Sharp PC-1500A is the actual name I think. It has it’s own little adding machine paper printer, with 4 different colors! Who needs a laptop!
Been trying to play around with it. It turns on and stuff, but whenever I try to really do something I get “ERROR 13” which someone on the internet said means it’s out of ram (6.2K of it ). I can’t figure out how to fix this so far, been looking through the instruction manual but may have to try the applications manual, personal programming guide, or master programming guide. It’s very amusing though. I need bigger pockets (and a traveling outlet XD)
WHOA THAT IS SO COOL. *twitch*
Testing preview button…”Preview Error,” it still says.
OH WOW!
That’s really awesome! How’s that supposed to be able to fit in your pocket? Technology has advanced sooo much, we’re lucky to have all of this amazing technology in our lives.
That’s so cool! I would never find anything that awesome in my basement. XD
((Maggie, my preview button works normally.))
I found a typewriter that’s built into a suitcase for easy storage in our old building’s basement.
I would still like to have a printer as tiny as that one. I wouldn’t know where to get one.
Cooool…
It does look kind of like a calculator. But how the heck would that fit in anyone’s pocket?
Hah, that is cool.
My mom walked by while I was looking at it. She says that the printer part probably disconnected, which would make it smaller, though still not small enough to fit in a pocket.
She also said a bunch of other stuff, but she didn’t think it was interesting, so I’ll refrain from quoting it.
Very cool! You know I’m writing a story set in an alternate eighties (I call it “Shuttlepunk”.), and that might show up now…
Is Grant O. still around here? If so, I’d like to see more how-tos…
he has been summoned
You make him sound like a Balrog.
Drums in the deep!
I hope he doesn’t still hold a grudge. The last thing I want is to be taken down by a Chairman with a flaming whip.
Just wanted to let people know that Enc wanted me to tell y’all his computer got hit by a virus and he won’t be back up till at least Sunday.
I BOTH LOVE AND HATE APPLE RIGHT NOW.
I just got the iOS4 software update for my iPod Touch. It’s really useful and everything, but today something weird happened. I tried to listen to some music, and it wouldn’t play! The app crashed after about 5 seconds! The same thing happened with my videos! I hope this stops happening soon…
Speaking of iPod Touches, I’m thinking of getting one soon (yup, after the rest of the universe already has one) but I’m not sure….any opinions? And does anyone know if it’s true that a new generation will be coming out in a few months? (Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this, GAPA’s, but I didn’t know where I else I should put it.)
I got one as a package deal with my MacBook, but I haven’t really used it that much, because everything it can do, the laptop can do, and I like a bigger screen, anyway.
It makes sense that Apple would release a new version of the iPod Touch, since they unveiled the new iPhone. I’d wait a while–it would be better to live a few more months sans iPod than get one that will be “outdated” soon.
I already have the iPod classic but it’s behind a few generations from the current one and pretty bad. :/ Still, I’m sure I’ll be fine for a few months. I might wait, but I’ll see…the main thing I want from it (besides the obvious iPod) is the Internet, but I’m not sure.
‘Kay, so I’m curious… My preview button appears to work fine. What browsers are people with and without problems using?
I’m on Safari.
Safari check-error
v. 3.0.2
Firefox 3.0 check-Nothing happens.
Netscape 7.0 check-Nothing happens (not that anyone else uses this browser, especially this version, but i like it).
I’m on the most recent, I believe. Er… 4.0.5.
The most recent one is 5.
Oh, okay. I guess we haven’t updated this in a while.
I’m going to Germany! I leave for the airport in thirty minutes!
I’ll keep you guys posted! Many happy returns!
Errata: My preview button works fine, and I’m on IE8.
Yay! Fun!
Have fun!
Whee~ have fun!
It’s supposed to be really pretty there!
Enjoy it there!
Um, hi. I know it’s been a super long time since I last posted, and I want to explain. When I first stopped posting, it was because, for certain odd reasons, I actually couldn’t. I finally regained the ability to visit this website at the beggining of summer vacation, two weeks ago, but I was preparing for Matrine Biology camp. When I got back, I was nervous about posting, since I hadn’t been on for so long. So I’m finally posting today. Sorry for rambling.
(By the way, I’m getting “Preview Error” too.)
Sorry, typo. It should be “Marine Biology” not “Matrine Biology”.
Hi there! I’m glad you’re back!
Why would you be nervous about posting? We’re all Musers here.
MARINE BIOLOGY CAMP?
Sorry but that sounds really fun and exciting! I’d go into marine biology if it weren’t so so so competitive, lookin at other types still. (vaguely)Where is it, and what sort of things will you do?
Yay! Welcome back! (not that I deserve to say that, odf course…)
Welcome back!
OMG HI!!!!!!!! I’m going to Marine Biology camp too, in Maine!!!!! WELCOME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gosh, is everyone going to marine bio camp? Glad you’re back and posting!
Randomosity, hiya! Welcome back!!!
No, no, it’s LATRINE Biology.
Back to the Justin Beaver (Yes, Beaver – his two front teeth look weird) comments:
According to my friend, Justin Bieber is a baby, baby, baaaaayybeeeee!
Yeah, yeah, I know. Some random girl is gonna come up to me one of these days while I’m talking carp about Baby-er and smack me. God help me – no, wait, god help JB, cause if that happens he’s my first target. Little twerp’s like half a foot shorter than me – and he’s allowed to drive *shudder*.
Cello – Sweet, Germany’s the best, according to a friend. He says they love it if you speak German there because apparently we have a really cute American accent.
Also, thank you to all my fans. I can’t say that’s an achievement, though, since all my fans are 13 year old girls that heard about me from another one, who heard about it blablabla. I goes all the way back to the only person who actually is a fan and who has heard my music.
Latrine biology? Okay…
U.S. puts in a sweet goal in the 91st minute so they’re going to the second round…and will be first in Group C, England beat Slovenia so England will be second place! Yay! Exciting game.
Cello – Sounds like fun! I’ve never been to Germany, although it sounds like it’d be a really cool place to visit.
Randomosity – It’s nice to have you back!
Castle –
I finished the part of the ACT that I was supposed to do today, which means that after tomorrow, I’ll be done with 11th grade…
But I’m still in the building, bec ause the computer teacher likes me and she has Photoshop, so now I’m trying to make a signature banner to use on web forums. I wanted to do the Apollo 8 Earthrise photo with “Ex Luna, Scientia” (“From the Moon, Knowledge”.) written off to the side, but the dimensions weren’t right.
So I found a photo of an Earthrise from the Kaguya probe and I’m trying to find the right combo of Grain and Lens Flare to make it LOOK like an Apollo photo…
(There’s something ironic about trying to make a photo from 2008 look like it’s from 1968.)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
USA beat Algeria into da DUST!
That’s a lot of O’s…
And South Korea advanced yesterday! Happiness all around!
(Preview Error)
To Errata, starr, and Piggy – Thanks!
To just Piggy – I’ve been meaning to ask you, is your avatar the character called No-face from Spirited Away? I don’t watch much anime, so I will not be surprised if I’m way off.
To Castle – I learned that Biology meant the study of life, and I do not believe that toilets are alive, but that would be quite interesting! (I laughed when I read that.) Also, I love your avatar.
To Jadestone – It is fun! I went to the Lawrence Hall of Science camp in Berkeley, for high-school students. There was one evening that was spent discussing college options, and you may be interested to know that only the fields concerning marine mammals are competitive and difficult to get into. Other marine creatures, especially invertebrates and algae, are surprisingly easy to get into, if you don’t mind entrance exams. At the camp, we basically did a watered-down version of what research students do. We observed marine life in all sorts of places, even the underside of docks! We went tidepooling and collected specimens. We spent about two hours each day in a lab, we did a fish dissection and a project requiring us to choose test subjects from the specimens to experiment with.
Of course it’s No-Face!
SCHOOL’S OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’M SO HAPPY! THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT SUMMER!
WOO-HOO! *high five*
Okay. I’ve downloaded new browsers-
Flock
Firefox 3 up to 3.6.4
Safari 3 up to 4.0.5
Netscape 7.0.2 up to Navigator 9.0.6 (It’s old, but classy)
I’m not getting IE, and I can’t get Chrome because it doesn’t support Tiger. Maybe I should try Iron. Well, I’m off to see the relative advantages of each browser.
Flock rocks for FB, and wait-MB has a feed! On to Firefox.
Sans Orchestre: The GAPAs appreciate your reasons for wanting to start afresh, but we think that concealing your past identities is the wrong way to do it. MuseBlog is (among other things) about understanding. We think you should trust your fellow MBers to understand your history before moving ahead. In any case, our commitment to honesty wouldn’t allow us to mislead other MBers.
~The GAPAs
*feels he should start singing the “We’re All Musers Here” song*
There’s a song?
Either there is, or there will be soon.
Of course there’s a song. I don’t think it’s been written yet, but it’s there.
So let’s write one! To an original tune, probably a pop hook or two incorporating the phrase.
Told you there would be one soon.
53 – Thank you. I like it when people compliment me, but only when I deserve it. And yes, my avatar is pretty flipping cool.
I have roller skates. They’re pretty beat up, but that’s fine with me because they were also only $25. They actually look exactly like the pair of boots that I long for, except with wheels. Unfortunately whenever I try to practice I just end up rolling down the hill, because our street is far from flat. But yay.
I feel strangely….empty, I guess, today. Just sort of drained, with no motivation to do anything. At all. Perhaps it’s because I just finished reading the Millenium Trilogy ( The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) which I started on saterday (so, 5 days….and three individual trips to two separate bookshops in 2 counrties…(I was on vacation)) Yeah, you could say I was obsessing. I miss my friends. Especially since I have to spend 3 hours a day in Geometry class (so far, much review) for 3 weeks this summer so that perhaps I can skip geometry and go straight into Math Analysis as a freshmen next year. Fingers crossed.
Actually, I’m sort of glad I’m not with my friends right now. I don’t know how they would handle the motivationless, fairly depressed, PMSy, nothing-like-her- usual-self Clare that is writing this post. Yeah, most have met me like this before, but usually I avoid them and just kind of listen to their conversations. Or read. okay, I could just keep rambling but I’ll put you out of your misery….bad days suck.
How was the Millenium Trilogy? I’ve heard some good reviews and some bad ones.
amazing. Excellent. addictive. I recomend it highly…(sort of inappropriate, though….i think you’re around my age (14) so as long as you sort of don’t really think about some bits you should be just fine.)
My mom has read that series, and she says it’s kind of disturbing (although really, really good). I’m thinking I’ll read them later in the summer when I’m not about to go off to camp.
I’ve reverted to an older version of the Preview plug-in. Please let me know whether your Preview button is working now, particularly if it wasn’t before (or was before but isn’t now).
Seems to be working just fine now, although it wasn’t working before. Yay!
Humbug! Humbug, humbug, HUMBUG!
Apparently there’s been thunderstorms in Chicago, so the flight there was cancelled, which means I missed the flight to Germany. Now I have to go on Friday early morning instead, go through either Denver or Atalanta to Dullas (Washington, D.C.), then go through Frankfurt to Munich. That’s three places for my bag to get lost! AAARGH!
My previw button still works.
Yeah, big thunderstorms.
BUT.
This means you don’t have to go through O’hare airport! Which is a blessing I assure you. Even the pretty lights on the C terminal walkway don’t make up for the CROWDING MASSES OF PEOPLE.
So you win on that front!
Yeah, I heard… *is on vacation* And there was a tornado last night, I heard…
god, I dispise O’Hare….
O’Hare is bad for tight connections, but I’ve enjoyed some long layovers there. It’s huge, so there’s a nice assortment of bookstores and newsstands. And there’s the rainbow-light tunnel, and there used to be a dinosaur — in section C, I think — though they may have moved it back into the Field Museum.
My favorite airport may be the one in Milwaukee. It’s the only airport I know with a store that sells old books. I could browse in Renaissance Books all day.
I actually do like the museum-ish section, and I love the dino. In fact, waiting for planes in O’Hare is actually pretty cool, it’s the security getting in and the sheer quanity of people (not to mention the smoke) getting out that I find bothersome.
Renaissance books in an airport? that is amazing!
Clare: Renaissance Books is the name of the bookstore. I think the name implies that used books are “reborn” when somebody new buys and reads them. The books they sell aren’t that old — at least, not that I’ve seen.
Okay, that makes WAY more sense….
Still. Nothing better than a good bookstore.
There’s still a dinosaur skeleton there, but it’s just a replica now, the original’s been moved back. The lights on the way to the C terminal are indeed pretty, but I’ve seen them a lot now… : /
O’hare’s a good airport to go to two or three times, and certainly worth looking around in, but flying out of it every (well, every OTHER, I suppose) flight kind of wears at the charm.
A replica dinosaur skeleton in an airport? Cool!
There’s a small museum section in the Salt Lake City airport.
And there’s an art museum in the Denver airport now, isn’t there? And, I hear, a huge statue of Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead. Imagine walking past that on your way to your flight.
Well, at least it’s not Set.
That sounds REALLY annoying. Even if you do get to miss O’hare airport.
(My preview button also is continuing to work.)
GAPAS! I’ve just realized a grave injustice in the HG2MB! It lists Chuck *retches* Norris but not Watership Down! How could you be so inconceivably one-sided (and for the wrong side, at that)!?
D: D: D:
HOW COULD THIS HAVE GONE UNNOTICED FOR SO LONG?
We assumed everybody already knew about Watership Down.
What’s Watership Down?
*luaghs like a maniac*
Read the disclaimer, read the book!
https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=900
And context: https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=252
*lifts pie threateningly*
Preview button… Works. This is from safari on my iPod touch.
Preview button is now working on Firefox.3.6.4. *is happy*
Flock is based on Firefox, and it has all the add-ons, plus even cooler stuff-if you juse Firefox, try it out!
Flock Rocks! Utterly no point for Firefox or Navagator if you have Flock. Safari is pretty good too, but I only have 4.0.5. By the way, Flock Rocks even if you can’t get the latest version. I also couldn’t make it speak American English.
Let’s see. How many MBers can name the characters in my new avvi? ((The main three that you can see.)) (((The ones with heads, and not just bodies. XD)))
I already know Armada can… and Enc and fireh probably can. Plus, Nym might be able to name them, two, if not all… Anyone else? XD
*challenges*
You may have my choklit if you can.
And a cookie on top of that if you can name the main body in the back.
The only ones I can name are Mr. Mistofelees (spelling?) and Rum Tum Tugger. And I suppose maybe Misto (even though I don’t know who en is)?
Um, Nym, Misto and Mr. Mistoffelees are the same person. Misto is just a nickname. XD
Ohhhhhh.
Yeah, I was very confused about that for a while. XD * fail *
Jellicles? *has read the book but never seen the musical*
Yes, Jellicles. ((Although, names are preferred. XD))
I’ve seen the 1998 video version, not in person, and I’m meaning to read the book. ((If you mean the Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, I’m meaning to read that. Otherwise, I don’t know of any books.))
The GAPAs are getting two permissive, I think. Now there’s nothing objectionable about a stone wall.
….What? *does not see a stone wall anywhere*
I think cromwell’s avvi is a stone wall, Armada. (I almost typed ATM again.) Correct me, somebody, if I’m wrong.
It says powder, if no one’s noticed.
Um… *fails to see how stone walls are related to Keiff’s avi* Okay, though. I see nothing objectionable about a stone wall either…
Do you mean “too permissive”?
Having read the T. S. Eliot book of short stories the show is based off, I can name a lot. Never seen the show though.
The book is much better than the musical, in my opinion.
Having not read the book yet, since it refuses to come in the mail quicker, I have no real opinion at the current time.
Ohhhh. Cats. Yeah, I was wondering.
Sans Orchestre: In case you’re checking the sidebar, there’s a message for you at https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=7483#comment-376432 .
Yup, preview wasn’t working before but is now.
Posting from the library, as my parents have banned internet for myself and all of my cousins for the rest of the week.
Nevertheless, life is GOOOD!
I’m at the beach right now…yes, be jealous. Be very jealous. However, it’s so hot that I’m pretty sure I’m going to be a shriveled grape by the end of the day, so maybe you shouldn’t be so jealous after all… *sigh*
Beeeaaaaccchhhh…. I’m so bad, I live right near the water, and almost never go…
Sometimes my family will go down to the beach if my dad can fit it into his work schedule (he works part time at home, which makes it a lot more convenient, but he still has meetings back home and things like that) but right now I’m with a friend at her beach house. So far we’ve gone down to the beach every day, but it’s really hot and the water is freezing so it’s not the best combination…
Anyone here good at writing prophesies? I need one for a story I’m writing.
The plot is an oddly patterned, cloned Espeon escaps from Team GaTR (Team Galactic and Team Rocket) and travels to a town, where she saves them from…something. Then, her “brother”, the original, shows up as an Umbreon and is turned away. This makes the Espeon mad and she does something bad to the village, then goes off to find her “brother”, who she loves. Along the way, I want her to meet a Sharpedo that does not have the Rough Skin ability (it has Swift Swim instead) and a sweet escaped Rampardos (as it he escaped from his trainer). I want the Espeon to find her Umbreon “brother”, discover he’s evil, and battle him, only to learn that he’s just being controlled by Team GaTR. I want the Sharpedo to sacrifice himself to save the Espeon or something.
Names: Espeon-Cheshire
Umbreon-Absalom
Sharpedo-Jetstream
Rampardos-??? (I don’t know what to name him…ideas please?)
Fan fiction? It will be in writing (instead of drawing), correct?
Errr…what type of prophesy? *is interested in Pokemon fanfic*
The Espeon is named Cheshire? Okay. What is Rampardos like?
* is also interested.* I can help. Maybe, illustrate or something.
GAPAs, I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but you can at least make threads using Flock, if not more. Just wanted to tell you.
I have changed my gravatar. MWAHAHAHA. I’m quite pleased myself. It’s a picture I took while on Spring Break.
Also, because I now have 2 emails, I have set up a gravatar to have on when I’m gloomy. It’s another picture I took. A long (I think) time ago. In chicago.
I can’t see it, yet though.
I’m still quite pleased with myself.
Ooh, pretty!
It’s very nice. Me, I’ll stick with Ches here for now.
Agreed! It’s a pretty picture.
You do that. I’ll probably go draw myself another one.
8~ Huh? Me? Saying dirty things on the R&R thread? Recently? Nope. BUT NOW I WANT TO KNOW WHAT WAS SAID. Hey, c’mon, I’m being a sailor here. You’ve piqued my interest.
ANYYWAYY, moving on…
HIIIII GUYS! Guess who’s back in Put-in Bay? That’s right. Me. I still don’t like it. But I have another line handler when we’re docking and getting underway, so that’s nice.
NIAGARA HAS A HEADRIG NET. This is amazing, because when you’re off watch you can go out and lie in it and it’s AWESOME. I’m done raving. Well, not really, but for now I am.
After leaving Put-in Bay last week we motored to another random island while doing maintenance and then anchored for a few days, doing maintenance, swim calls, loafing in the headrig, good stuffs like that. Then we motored to a pudunk town in Ohio to pump out sweage and take on water and do laundry. Then we motored back to Put-in Bay again, where we are now for Pirate Fest. Whoo. So we’ll be getting to tell people all weekend about how we aren’t pirates. Funfunfun. >.<
I had all this stuff to say, but now I don't know. And I need to get off the computer and back to the ship soon. So bye, I love you all.
OH OH OH! Kokonvention on Saturday with Grant and Ebeth, for real! I'm ridiculously excited about this.
I hope somebody’s equipped to take pictures. Have fun! (As if you could help it.)
i don’t even remember what was said. it was me and julia though, so you can probably imagine what sort of conversation it was
Oh yes, I have a camera, a camera in my phone and a webcam on my computer. I’m sure there will be documentation of this historical event. As well as the ship and other good things. I’m sure it’s going to be epic.
i also have a camera! which i should go charge now! i am not bringing my computer though (living on the edge, what? good thing i upped my texting plan. NEED CONSTANT COMMUNICATION OH EM GEE)
I’m leaving for the airport now! I’m going to actually be going to Germany this time! I hope!
Good luck!
I spent all day at a water park, now I’m totally, like, dead. Beyond dead. I can’t stand roller coasters, but I really have a soft spot for water rides, especially the really tall crazy ones that make you feel like you’re going to fall off and die. I would’ve gone on the rides more often, but the lines…
….Well.
I give up.
I honestly give up.
I just can’t like anything without someone coming in and telling me that it’s/I’m stupid, can I? Not one single thing.
Whatever. I don’t care anymore. I try to make friends, but at some point I have to choose between having friends and being myself. And I have to keep making that choice again and again. I try to make some kind of life of my own for myself, but I just can’t manage without anyone else. Honestly, I’ve got Keiffer, and…. nobody else, really. Nobody anywhere.
I’m having a bit of a hard time lately… can you guys tell?
You’re cool!
Thanks.
*sighs* I guess I just can’t put aside my friends’ differences when they keep (unintentionally or no) dissing my likes thoughtlessly…. I just need to get my act together, really. It’s my problem, not theirs. Mostly.
Armada, I’m proud of you for coming and saying that. I know it must have been hard for you. *huggles*
Aw. T’ank you. *huggles back* Yeah, I’m working on it….
I’m sorry if I’m been a jerk. * hugs in apology * I’ll try to be nicer.
You are an awesome person, by the way.
Sorry that sounded so stupid…
No….. it’s not you. It’s fine. *huggles* You’ve always been supportive of me! It’s mostly real-life friends and older online friends.
Actually, a lot of it is our problem, too.
Sorry. I’ve just recently been getting back into the habit of holding real conversations with people. Something happened and I got out of it, and I’m trying to get back in. So far, it’s only been working with people who often prod me… I’ll try harder with you.
*hugs* Thanks, SR. You’re fine, really, like I said to Pseudo (I know everyone calls her Nym now, but that’s a character from Henry V to me…. XD), it’s mostly real-life friends and older online friends. The MA MBers are really great for the most part…
Hi, everyone! How’s life? I’ve read the entire thread, and it seems like most everyone is having wonderful adventures and such. As for me, I’ve been cleaning my room and sorting through all of my old school stuff (I found a huge box of stuff from Kindergarten in the attic! That was a long time ago!). Next week, I’m going up to Michigan for a week, then, in July, I’m going backpacking for a whole month! Then, I’m going to college! I’m supersupersuper excited, but I’m going to miss all of my friends from high school.
Axa (5): Try submitting to online literary magazines. There are hundreds of them out there, and they’re always looking for submissions. I took a mini-class on the subject with someone who runs a really successful one, and afterwards my school started a literary magazine, which seemed to generate quite a bit of interest, so there’s definitely a market of readers who are interested in reading that sort of thing. If I remember tomorrow, I’ll FB you a list of links or something. [Ahh, I just scrolled down the page a bit more and saw that you said you submitted to your school’s magazine. Yay! That’s probably the best way to go. And I’m sure there are lots of opportunities in college.]
oxlin (9.1.1.2.2): Like Luna said, I can answer pretty much any Mac-related question, but I’ll give you an overview of some Mac features I use on a regular basis. CTRL+W closes a page (that’s one of my favorite shortcuts). COMMAND+TAB will bring up a list of applications, and if you keep holding down Command and press the Tab key, you can switch between applications really easily. Depending on what computer you have, you’ll have a variety of F-keys you can use, too. F11 (or, on new laptops, FN+F11) makes all of your windows hide on the sides of the screen. (FN is the bottom-leftmost key on your computer.) I use this when I want to look at my desktop for something. Press COMMAND+SHIFT+3 to take a screenshot. You can also click COMMAND+SHIFT+4 if you want to take a specific screen shot–it will turn your cursor into a little plus-sign-looking-thing that you can use to crop an image on your screen. I think I’ve rambled on for long enough, but let me know if you have any questions, etc.
Jadestone (23): Oliver is a fantastic name for a giant octopus. Sounds like fun!
Sans Orchestre (30): Welcome back!
Clare (72): That’s a pretty picture! It looks like it’s sort of foggy at the edge of the water.
Fiddler (73): Hello! I’m glad you’re having a good time sailing! Have fun meeting Grant and Ebeth.
I’ve looked into some mostly online based magazines, but i think i need to invest much more time into searching to find some that are better fits. But oh that would be lovely (if you don’t mind)!!
I am so tired I am dizzy. Trying to sleep on the way home, twisty roads and bright lights and I am tired. Tired…
Went to the city today. Much drama and heat (at least, what passes for heat in the Pacific Northwest but isn’t really particularly hot at all by other standards). I bought a grey summer dress and $43.44 worth of books (Men At Arms, Interesting Times, Wyrd Sisters, Cat’s Cradle, Galapagos, and A Fine and Private Place).
cat’s cradle is one of my favorite books! assuming you’re talking about the one by kurt vonnegut, that is…
Yeah, that was a funny one. We had to read that for school last year. And then at Space Camp, I tried to use some of the terminology and nobody got what I was talking about.
“I don’t think I’d want to be on a team with a group of other people who were all from the same school, because that would be such a granfalloon, when a real shuttle crew is such a perfect karass, random people from diverse backgrounds brought together for a mission that will benefit the world.”
COME TO THE DEMIGOD RPG!!! I CAN’T CONTINUE ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait, COME TO THE DEMIGOD RPG!!! I CAN’T CONTINUE ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
GAPA’s, why aren’t there morphing chameleon threads anymore?
People stopped posting on them, so we stopped making them.
Could we perhaps try them again?
Possibly, but I think the Paleo threads serve much the same purpose.
Oooh, I forgot about those… I almost never sign in.
Same here. I’ll attempt to read a whole bunch of posts at once, but mostly I forget about them, because they don’t show up on the sidebar.
I’ve been re reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which has brightened my mood. Especially since I’d forgotten about several parts of it from the first few times around and it’s always nice to re read Harry Potter in general.
Also, I just went to the library and checked out (almost) all of the back issues of Muse on the shelf on my friend’s library card! I’ve been trying to space out my time reading them so I don’t read them all in one sitting, but that’s probably not going to last…I also decided to leave two issues of Muse – I think two I have, but I’m not sure, and put them on the main stands in the library so they would stick out more!
My library doesn’t HAVE Muse. *grumbles*
Wow. I haven’t posted on this thread or the previous one. I think I wrote that just for the sake of posting. So I’ll say some more!
I’m going to Holland again! I’m a bit sad, though, because we won’t be staying at my opa’s (grandfather’s) old house. He moved a little while ago, because my oma (grandmother, but that’s relatively obvious) died a couple of years ago. I am happy that I’ll see lots of relatives, both those who live in Holland, and some from the US!!
And now I’ll run off to the Demigod RPG.
Okay, so now I’m REALLY done with the ACT, which means I’m REALLY done wtih 11th grade.
So now I’m on summer vacation! Yay!
I hope you REALLY have a great summer!
I say “really”, because I thought I’d finished the test on Wednesday, but it turned out my teacher had made a mistake and given me the Practice ACT, so I had to take it “again” yesterday and today.
Guys, the ISS is illuminated by the sun every night for the next few days, so it’s easy to see the flybys. I found a site that gives you the time and everything–Google “spaceweather flybys” and click on the first result.
Ooh, there’s one by me tomorrow night! Now let’s see, it would be in…um… that direction.
That’s cool!
Now I just have to remember…
Wicked! Out of the south-southwest just around nine tomorrow!
I knew I’d find a Muser at this camp sooner or later! This week I spotted someone reading a Muse and talked with her about it. I also got to read some over her shoulder! Yay Muse.
Aha! The Kokonspiracy kokongeals. Was she nice?
Yah! She was rather quiet and very muserly. It was fun to meet a Muser and to do a double take when I saw such familiar pages.
5- (Axa) Definitely send some out to markets. Duotrope (duotrope dot com) is a very good list of markets. What sort of poetry do you write? My poetry tends to be myth related and speculative. Cicada does indeed publish poems. Good luck! If you need any more advice, ask me. I’ve been sending out my own poems since last year and one was sold this past May.
oh my goodness! that is so helpful! thank you oxlin
hmm…i don’t know how to describe it. it’s like a series of strong images…aghhh
I may indeed ask for more of your help after I look through these…thank you so much!
i’m so appreciative of everyone….aww jeez…..
Just took a practice GRE. And despite the fact that it has all the things that I hated on the old SATs that they got rid of with their “new” SATs (analogies, column comparisons in math, etc), I did quite well. And all the math mistakes were, as per usual, not because I didn’t know how to do the stuff, but because I made ridiculous, stupid mistakes (for instance, since when does 5X6=20????).
Unfortunately, I did well enough on the practice exam, that I rather doubt my norm of significant improvement from practice exam to real exam will actually hold for the GREs, as it has for ACTs and SATs both…Ah, well.
780 verbal (I only missed one, and it was a halfway stupid miss. The small handful of analogies/antonyms that I plain guessed on, I actually got right, oddly enough. Because they were quite honestly complete guesses), and 680 math (missed 5 through stupid mistakes)
But, yeah, I’m feeling pretty decently about the whole GRE thingy now. Even the essay shouldn’t be too bad, other than my just not wanting to have to write two essays. :/
In other news: I’m building a cardboard TARDIS. Pics probably coming eventually, when it’s more done.
Just send the pictures of the finished TARDIS back in time, and we’ll post them now.
If only I could.
CARDBOARD TARDIS!!! LUNA IS A GODDESS!!! the funny thing about that sentance is that Luna (as a name, not as luna the amazing tardis-building person) refers to the moon which has often, throughout history, been associated with women on account of menstrual cycles and even more commonly been associated with divinity, making moon-goddesses not at all uncommon.
by the way, this is my gloomy gravatar. Because today is a gloomy day.
*falls over laughing* Cardboard TARDIS??! That is a win.
Oh, and Nymmie says she’s in love with you now.
err…P_M? who are you talking to and who are you talking about?
She’s talking to me, and she’s talking about Pseudonym, her sister.
Sister? Who, me?
We call Pseudonym Nymmie now – sorry. She prefers Nym actually but I can’t break the habit.
No, no, she’s half a goddess. Spelluna, remember? (OK, Luna’s much better than me, so she’s probably more like 3/4 of a goddess…)
Hang on, what’s this? Since when am I “much better than you”?
No pessimism. You’re both amazing!
I should’ve known that of all things in that post, that it would be the TARDIS that y’all latched on to and commented upon. XD
If only my parents had the same approval, lol. Dad is annoyed by the giant cardboard box (it’s not full size, unfortunately. Probably only about 4-4.5 feet tall, and only 20 inches sqaure about the base) taking up space and having to be walked around, and Mom whilst not bothered by the whole affair (she supplied the box, afterall, and will be hopefully supplying me with the much needed paint and some other things for more detail), keeps making fun of me by calling it my “retard machine” or retarded machine, or whatever.
From a refrigerator box?
The question is, is it bigger on the inside than on the outside?
Unfortunately, no, not a refrigerator box. It’s smaller than your average fridge box. I believe it was actually a “pastry island” box. And sadly not bigger on the inside than outside, probably not really even big enough for one to sit scrunched up in, as it’s only about 20 X 20. Definitely can’t stand in it, but it’s all good. Still not sure where I’m going to put it….My room’s so full of HP displays and the like, there’s not even probably six square inches of floor space, much less 20.
MAKING A TARDIS? Luna! So am I! Or I will be, once I have appropriate blue paint! Mine’s a wardrobe box
It was used previously for a stunt we pulled with my friend that I will have to describe later, but before that it was new (bought it for $12 :D)
Brilliant.
Hmmm… if its made from a wardrobe box, can it take you to Narnia?
FIRST THING I AM GONING TO TEST
Five years later, the Master marries Jadis and they plunge Earth into an eternal ice age.
Ice-nine.
Yikes!
So, my dad is in South Bend on Saturday. Without me. Which matters because I’m Orthodox. I have to make all the food myself (pasta and hot dogs, with tuna and bread), and do all of that…I can take care of myself, but we kind of had an argument. We haven’t been on the best of terms, with the campaign and all. I think I’ll have some friends over. Fun.
International Space Station status: viewed.
Yeah, thanks for pointing that out to me, Piggy. I found when it was visible, decided to tell my dad when he got home, and forgot about it until literally as it was flying over, when I asked mom what time it was, exactly, and we all rushed outside to see if it was still there. Sure enough, it was.
Cool! I’ll try to catch my sighting tonight.
And… it’s cloudy. Why!?!? Why does it have to be cloudy!?!?
Leaving for vacation in about a half an hour! So I probably won’t be posting on MB, or anywhere else for that matter, for two weeks. Three if my parents get another week. Byr!
Woah. I had such an epic vampire dream last night. It wasn’t even that unique, it was just that most people were vampires and we had to hide and they were frozen during they day and it was so caking creepy that I’m making a run-on sentence.
So anyway, I was watching E! (for The Soup) and a commercial came on for some show about a young woman who presumably has enough of an interesting life to have it televised, and it said, “A Super-New episode of *Place alliterative name of show here*” I would like to know what qualifies something to be super new rather than just plain new. I even get brand new, but I’m pretty sure something can only be so new.
Anyone doing anything interesting for the summer? I’m going to Jamaica for days and possibly England with my cousins!
SFTDP
*for six days
I was reading this magazine, and in every issue they have a short list where they tell what’s in style that week, and this was the most recent issue’s list:
In: Bisexuality, French macaroons, and Parasols
Five minutes ago: Bipartisanship, Whoopie pies, and SPF 90
Out: Bai Ling, Cupcakes, and Trees.
First (and last) time I’ll every be “in”.
Honestly, though, how do they come up with these? Since when are trees “out”?
And cupcakes? Seriously?
Yeah, now can “trees” be out? We kinda need them…
Trees are out as far as SUN PROTECTION goes, Nymmie!
And I love cupcakes.
88.4.1- I’m going to leave mine with the ability to flatten, so I can store it underneath my (newly cleaned out!) bed, or against the back wall of my closet.
I’m also not sure if I want to cut doors into it or just paint them.
But I do know the box is big enough to sit in for up to 45 min, as that’s what my friend Feather did
She came down from Vermont (she used to live here but moved my sophomore year) to visit us, except she didn’t tell our mutual best friend JB (she wanted to surprise her). So we bought the box and hid her inside it (even taped the top shut. Half an hour before JB was supposed to come. Oops.) and waited for JB, who we had told previously that Feather had sent us a box of graduation presents. We had her open the box and she was completely flabbergasted when she pulled back the flaps and saw Feather staring up at her XD For a second JB really thought she’d mailed herself! It was very fun and amusing.
My own story about playing with boxes…
Once, when I was younger, we got a table in a very big box that I played in with my brothers. At one point, in the midst of playing, my brothers decided to take advantage of the fact that they outnumbered me and trapped me in the back of the box. Then they closed up the front and announced they were going to mail me to Jamaica without any food.
They were quite young and considered this something they could reasonably get away with.
I was also quite young, so I saw this as a reasonable threat and plotted an escape. Before the planning-to-send-me-away, one of my brothers had brought a Batman action figure into the box, so I punched a hole in the side of the box with Batman’s head and then widened it with the toy and my fingers, trying to dig out.
Before my hole was anywhere near big enough for me to escape through, my mom came in, shoed my brothers away, and opened the box from the top.
We moved so often when I was growing up that we frequently drafted boxes into new uses. The most box fun I remember, though, was rolling down hills inside them.
Fiddler~ Heyy guys! We’re Kokonvening in Put-in Bay, Ohio right now. We’re having loads of fun, weirding out the locals (well, the locals who are sober enough to be weirded out), and enjoying the random pirates wandering around. Well, I’m writhing in pain because of the historical inaccuracy of their costumes, but that’s a subject for another post.
Anyway, Grant and Ebeth are totally flammy and Ben is kind of awkwardly quiet in a cool way. Life is good.
Oh, and we called Robert and Rebecca and harassed them and were obnoxious, and it was good. ♥ GAPAs are so cool.
USEC Grant Orndorff- ‘ey guys! We’re enjoying ourselves greatly here in Put-In-Bay (mostly because we are masters of self-entertainment). There has been cannon fire, which has caused me to jump in an amusing fashion, like just then while I was typing that sentence. I’m wondering what would happen if pirates actually attacked here; there are plenty of lovely weapons lying around but not, I suspect, very much gunpowder. Great fun indeed. ‘Bye for now.
Ebethykins – CANNON FIIIIRE! there are pirates all over. i’m wearing a pirate-y bandanna. it’s a good time. if the GAPAs had any doubt of my insanity before, those doubts have certainly been laid to rest by those phone calls, especially the messages we left them. Grant keeps legitimately jumping into the air. Like when he says he’s jumping, he is not lying. i have been taking lots of pictures! this event is well-documented. most of put-in-bay seems to be bars, but there is music coming out of them which i can randomly sing to. d’awww grant just gave fern a condolence hug because she works so hard on the ship. TRUE PLATONIC MB WUV.
Ebeth’s friend Ben – I’m all up in your forums.
Incomprehensible, maybe, but never obnoxious. Although the blog seemed to think you were spam. Maybe it knows something?
Putin Bay? *feels Russianly patriotic*
*wishes he lived near other MBers*
*wishes other MBers lived near him*
*crosses out last sentence and replaces it with “other MBers wish he lived near them*
HIIII
I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS MY TURN
HUG EACH OTHER FOR ME
Aw, I am jealous envious! That sounds like fun! -sniffle- Why is the Midwest so far away….you must all promise to come to the PNW someday! Or perhaps I shall go there…someday…
Cannon fire… -more envy-
Piggy just got done eating the best bratwurst of his life. Farmers’ markets are wonderful places, in case any of you haven’t gone to one.
Went swimming in the ocean today, then running along in the surf. Pure bliss.
I have returned, with the addition of a watch tan and lots of sand in my shoes and the loss of half a toenail! National parks are beautiful things.
AGREED!
Prom afterparty (I feel so pretentious saying that) was at a National Seashore! It was great!
Sounds amazing! We went to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison on this particular trip.
77 (Armada): Don’t stop being who you are! Not for anyone’s sake! Once one gives up oneself, one is swayed by conformism and loses all control over one’s life. I don’t think that sounds like a very good plan for the future. Plus, you’re awesome the way you are.
88 (Luna the Lovely) and 89 (Jadestone): Have fun! Send us postcards from your respective inter-dimensional travels! Don’t forget to pack your sonic screwdrivers!
95 (Pseudonym): My comments upon cupcakes and trees, as spurred by that list:
Cupcakes are good. Not as fab as muffins, in my opinion, because cupcakes are all about the surface–the frosting, sprinkles, and such–whereas muffins are honest and all about the good things inside them. Muffins are somewhat like the baked-good equivalent of girls who are comfortable with themselves without frosting makeup. Cupcakes are fun and nice, so I don’t disapprove of them.
Trees are essential. They allow us to breathe. They give shade, and prevent landscapes from being flat. The wind rushes through them and makes a lovely sound. They can never be “out.”
98 (Fiddler, Grant, Eboo, and Eboo’s friend Ben): Oh, that sounds awesome. I’m glad you’re having fun. You phoned GAPAs? How unexpected and enviable.
Fiddler: Weirding out locals–huzzah! Historically inaccurate costumes–horrors!
USEC Grant: I sympathize. About this time last month, I was in a restaurant and the little buzzer that alerted us to our food being ready went off. I jumped in a fashion that was very amusing to a young patron at the next table.
Enjoy looking at the weaponry. They can be quite beautiful, can’t they?
“Ebethykins”: Yeah! Cannons! Platonic MB Wuv=awww!
Ebeth’s friend Ben: Good for you for being “up on us,” which I presume to mean up-to-date. I must wonder, though: do you know all of our secrets, young padawan/grasshopper?
99 (Piggy): I thoroughly approve of your approval of farmers’ markets.
Well, I approve of your approval of my approval. I also, upon thinking, offer my approval of my approval of your approval of my approval.
Farmers’ markets are nice. They contain delicious fruit, and occasionally tamales. At ours, we have crepes.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING US HELP YOU HELP US ALL.
(Thank you for approving of us approving of you approving of us all?)
haha ben knows none of our secrets. well, he met julia, but she and i told everyone we met through a knitting club although i don’t think people really believed that
For some reason my avatar appears to be…nothing on my computer. I only see a blank square, not even the avatar I would get if I didn’t have gravatar. I haven’t changed it, so I don’t know what’s going on. *confuzzles*
that is odd, as I can see your gravatar just fine.
I’m on a different computer now and I see it just fine as well. Strange.
*de-lurks*
Hello, all. I have had absolutely zero time to be on MB since summer began. However, I am rather enjoying myself.
I’m fourteen in a week!
…I have mixed feelings about this.
(goes rant-y) yeah, and I have to waste 3 hours a day five days a week of my glorious summer doing a geometry course that is primarily review AND getting 30min-1 hour of homework for it at your school (my school too in the fall ) Which incidently means i’m nearer to your nieghborhood than usual. Cool. Anyway, Happy Birthday. Being 14 is pretty cool. Sorry I got momentarily rant-y there
Wait, do you know each other offline?
Indeed.
Are you within Kokoning distance from Northeastern Oregon?
I wish. Nope, [Snipped for being way too specific. –Admin.]
(My appologies Admin. ) We live in Western Washington.
Hm… How about Portland?
How about taking this to the Kokonvention thread? And please remember the rules.
Happy nearly-birthday, shadowfire!
Happy week-to-birthday-day, shadow! *sulks in corner, because I have to wait two months to be 13*
South Korea lost to Uruguay!
Awww…*choklit* USA lost to Ghana…
105- You’re 12?! *will be 14 in November*
88/89- Life sized TARDISes? My goal for college is to paint my dorm door to look like a TARDIS door.
Ok, my computer will be back tomorrow. I’m using my dad’s machine right now, but I don’t like typing on it because the keys don’t go down as far. So it feels like I’m not actually typing.
So, my computer will almost certainly be back tomorrow. They said it’ll be a week to 5 days. It’s been 6 days already.
And, SQUEEE. The Big Bang was epic. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER DOCTOR WHO SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I knew the coat in the Byzantium forest wasn’t a production error! He lost it, then he got it, and lost it again? Unlikely they’d make that mistake.
We find out who River Song really is next series! And essentially the same story arc, which hasn’t happened before. Apparently, the next Christmas special will be “the most Christmassy Christmas special every” according to Mr. Moffat (Who is EPIC WIN IN EVERY WAY, SHAPE, AND FORM) I wonder who/ what the Silence is- is it something from before the universe? Omega (from the old series)? Is it the Doctor?
I loved the beginning of the Big Bang- it was just what I look for in a time travel story. You meet a future version of you, then you become your future self. And it’s so sweet between Rory and Amy. 1,894 years of guarding her. *puppy eyes* Oh, and little Amy is so cute. *more puppy eyes*
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.
Did Mr. Moffat realize that when he first wrote River Song? Because, if he did, then I have to commend him for brilliant planning. I he didn’t, then obviously there must be other forces at work. *spooky hands*
And, of course, I have to love the way the Rory put the Doctor’s sonic into Amy’s pocket. And then the Doctor pulls it out 1,894 years later.
The only thing that could have made this episode better is if it was real. And I was in it.
Bye, won’t be posting until tomorrow, probably! *throws kitten out as my blue box vanishes*
Re: TARDIS dorm doors. Mm. My friend made a TARDIS out of a refrigerator box I believe and then it was on her dorm door. Now it gets passed down to whomever in the science fiction fantasy club manages to fit the most amount of stuff in the least amount of space.
Re: Dorm door TARDIS: WIN.
Oxlin- Ooh, nice. I can fit lots of stuff in very small bags.
My favourite little red bag can contain my sunglasses, my hairbrush, lots of my little lucky thingummies that everyone else calls junk, my “sonic screwdriver” which is actually a flashlight but who cares, more junk, a frisbee, my mp3 player, more junk, a smallish notebook, two smallish stuffed animals, three (small) towels, and MORE. And then that bag fits within my purse which usually would contain at least five books, my laptop, several notebooks, a toothbrush, lots of pencils, lots of highlighters, lots of erasers, lots of mechanical pencil lead, my library card, another hairbrush, another towel, and the occasional hat.
My friends think I’m insane, and humour me by asking “Are you sure you’re not related to Mary Poppins?” when I pull a stuffed animal out of a bag that couldn’t possibly be more than six inches long, three wide, and nine tall. (estimated. I might dig out a ruler later.)
Wow. This post is unnecessarily long.
Yesterday I bought some oven-hardening clay from Hobby Lobby. Last night I was making some small, comestible-themed sculptures with it, and then I made a cupcake-shaped necklace charm by sticking a loop of jewelry wire into the top before I baked it. It’s a vanilla cupcake with pink frosting, a blue muffin cup, and multicolored sprinkles. This morning I made some more charms (strawberry, watermelon slice, sun, flip-flop, and doughnut), but I haven’t baked them yet.
That sounds fun!
Hey Robert, I never realized that your (er, precisely what relation was he again?) ancestor and namesake was the governor of Guam! The first motion picture played in Guam did so under his administration.
*wishes he had an interesting family* The biggest claim to fame I can think of in my family would be an assistant manager at an office building, or thereabouts.
Admiral Coontz (1864-1936) is my great-grandfather.
Or should that be “was my great-grandfather”? He isn’t anything now, but he wasn’t my great-grandfather when he was alive. Language is strange.
I thought that was it. I was worried I’d get the number of greats wrong.
Imagine the grammatical difficulties if you went back in time and became your own great-grandfather.
It’s an interesting family. Admiral Coontz’s father, my great-great-grandfather Thomas Hart Benton Coontz, was a boyhood pal of Mark Twain’s and later became mayor of Hannibal, Missouri. And the admiral’s father-in-law founded the first brewery in Alaska. We’ve done all sorts of odds and ends to keep busy, over the centuries.
Of course, all of their accomplishments pale in comparison to yours: founding the organization which, by the time this century is done, will have gained control of the world and nearby planets.
Oh, I don’t think I deserve any particular credit for that. I’m sure they’d have done the same if they’d had access to the Internet.
*tries to imagine an alternative-universe steampunk family history*
*fails but finds the attempt amusing*
Okay, I’ve wanted to share this for a while. In Latin class, we were studying Satire this year, so our final project was to think of a modern topic, re-imagine it in an ancient Roman context, and then write a newspaper article about it. Me being me, I chose space exploration. Explanations appear in double parentheses.
EXPLORATION- Why We Need Expeditions to Serica ((Serica was the name the Romans gave to the place silk came from. It was really China, but they didn’t know that.))
An ambitious new plan for exploration of the East was announced today by Carolus Sphaerus Audax, head of the Imperial Ministry of Travel and Cartography. ((“Carolus Audax” means “Charles the Bold”. Charles Bolden is the NASA Administrator. “Sphaerus” means “celestial”.))
“Rome owes its very existence to an explorer- Aeneas sailed into the unknown in order to reach Italia’s shores. We owe it to our forbears to continue the mapping of uncharted lands. Our emperor agrees, and he has pledged seven million denarii towards trading expeditions beyond the Black Sea in the next decade,” Carolus said. ((Aeneas was the mythical father of the Roman race.))
No stranger to exotic dangers himself, Carolus, the son of freedmen from Napoli, served deep in Africa as a legionnaire before his appointment to the Ministry last Iunius. ((Bolden is a former astronaut who was appointed in June of 2009.))
“My own experiences on the frontiers of our Empire convinced me of the importance of exploring these mysterious lands,” he told reporters. “And all we’ve learned in the years since then has only strengthened my resolve.”
The East does indeed hold many resources, according to experts. Scientist Pliny the Elder says that the Kingdom of Serica lies beyond the furthest areas seen by Alexander the Great and is the source of silk, that rare and valuable cloth demanded by our well-to-do citizens. Aegyptian scholar Gaius Tristius says that the Sericans may be a great civilization similar to our own, with an emperor, a large navy, plumbing, and even strange magnetic stones that can be used for navigation.
“The world is so large that it’s arrogant to assume we’re the only civilization out there.” says Tristius.
Many entrepreneurs viewed today’s announcement with approval, including the Oriens Chi society, a private group dedicated to exploration of the East. ((“Oriens Chi” = “East X”. SpaceX is a real private spaceflight company.))
“I’m ready to launch a caravan at once if the government will provide an escort,” reported Oriens Chi founder Claudius Elonius Caela, famous to many for his experiments in creating a pollution-free raeda. “I firmly believe the silk trade with Serica will be the next great business frontier.” ((Elon Musk is the founder of SpaceX, who is also well-known for his work in creating electric cars. “Caela” means “sky”.))
Such sentiments were echoed by equite Ronus Brassus, already famous for his popular tours of Gallia, Dacia, and Hispania. “I think it’s really a given that once the legions have built a bit of infrastructure and made things safe, Romans are going to want to travel to these places. Serica, I feel, will be our next big destination.” ((Sir Richard Branson is the leader of the space tourism company Virgin Galactic. “Equite” is a Roman aristocratic rank usually translated as “knight”.))
Not everyone supports the Emperor’s decision, however. Senator Caius Antonius voiced his disapproval to reporters on the Curia ((The Curia was the Roman senate house.)) steps:
“Personally, I think it’s an absolute waste, spending all of that money on trips to the desert. Those denarii could be better spent on games for the Circus or gladiator contests. We probably won’t find anything at all; there are only barbarians out there, anyway. The Ministry might as well try flying to the Moon!” ((The “games for the Circus” he talks about are the origin of our modern phrase “bread and circuses”.))
Few onlookers noted the irony that the Senator gave his speech in a toga of the finest silk. ((In the book Detectives in Togas, there’s a character named Caius, and someone makes fun of him by writing “Caius is a dumbell!” This Caius is also quite a dumbbell.))

Write IX Via Draconem, near the temple of Apollo
((This is quite similar to ads for the Planetary Society and other space advocacy groups. “IX Via Draconem” means “Number 9, Dragon Street”. SpaceX’s rocket is called the Falcon 9, used with a capsule called the Dragon.))
My random thoughts:
-I hope this expedition goes better than Aeneas’.
-Is this Iunius in the Julian or in the pre-Julian calendar?
-How would one make a pollution-free raeda? Some sort of device for, er, catching the motor’s exhaust, so to speak?
-I’ve never heard “eques” translated as “knight”. I suppose it makes sense.
-The spelling “Caius” has always aggravated me. It’s so irregular and pointless.
-It should be pointed out that the Circus was short for the Circus Maximus, which, instead of the elephant-and-clown fiasco it is today, was a stadium in which chariot races were held. Circus means circle, which is the basic shape charioteers raced in.
-Togas were never made of silk. Only wool.
-What would a senator care what the citizens thought? They weren’t elected. The tribunes and quaestors would be much more useful people to bug.
It’s satire, it’s not supposed to be completely accurate.
SAYS YOU
*disappears in a flash of light and cloud of smoke*
That’s amazing.
Hi! I haven’t actually been on this entire month, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get back into my groove.
I had heard about Doctor Who, mainly from MuseBlog and a video-sharing website. I didn’t have any burning desire to watch it, so I didn’t. Then, my friend called me up and started yelling, “OH MY GOSH HAVE YOU WATCHED DOCTOR WHO? IT IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER TO BLESS THIS PLANET,” so of course I had to humor her and watch it. OH MY GOSH IT IS THE MOST AMAZING THING TO BLESS THIS PLANET. that is all.
And now for something that also calls for the caps lock key to be used: I HAVE A JOB! Which is exhausting and takes up my free time and I don’t really do anything interesting, but one of the good things that comes with a job is that I MAKE MONEY. to SPEND ON STUFF. Like a TARDIS or Converse. My dad vetoed the idea of a car, unfortunately. Speaking of my dad, I actually work for him. He’s a dentist, and he has a sneaking suspicion he will be audited soon, so I have to organize eight years of randomized receipts. Once I’m done with that, I’m going to start some publicity stuff, and then I get to learn how to be an assistant to the assistant. YAY!
I also want to say how much I really appreciate MuseBlog and everyone who is on it and the GAPAs who are more than generally amazing. I’ve changed since I’ve started out here, and I think I’ve changed for the better. So thanks to everyone. You guys have kept me somewhat sane when I was ready to go crazy and you’re just so GOOD at being awesome.
Congrats on having a job!
Hey y’all! I haven’t been on in ages; [insert generic exclamations about new threads, etc.]!!!
Well, I was on a road trip with my mom to Canada, passed through New York, stopped at Niagara Falls, crossed the Rainbow Bridge into Canada, went to Toronto, witnessed lots of protests, went to Montreal, heard lots of French, went back home. It was a lot of fun, but it’s good to be back to the MB!
Sorry for not posting recently- the few times when I did have an Internet connection I had to use it for registering for music camp, checking flight schedules, and so on.
In Michigan now! I love Michigan, but I think people are crazy to live where there are tornadoes. Earthquakes I can handle, sort of. Tornadoes, no way.
Cousins are alternating between driving me nuts (the two younger ones) and amusing me with their antics (three older ones).
Have I mentioned that my Indian grandmother is a sexist, religiously fanatical worshipper? In the nicest way possible, of course- I still love her, but she tried to keep me from going outside the entirety of yesterday and when I managed to convince her to let me go for a walk, she got really angry when she found me playing soccer with my (male) cousins and said “The Lord” (meaning some incarnation of BrahmaVishnuShivaWhatever) would punish me for acting like a boy and soiling my clothes. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“…people are crazy to live where there are tornadoes.”
So that would be… Earth?
Piggy, luv, not everywhere on earth gets tornadoes. Just like not everywhere gets hurricanes. Alaska, for instance. No tornadoes (no hurricanes, either).
Uhhhhh no, if you take my advice and live near the water you’ll get waterspouts!
Not frigid water like in the Pacific NW. Sure, we’ve got earthquakes. And volcanoes that could go BOOM. but no bad storms and volcanoes/earthquakes aren’t exactly an annual threat.
Sorry about your grandmother.
In my lifetime there have been, um… two? three? tornadoes nearby, and none of them caused any damage to my house or anything. I don’t think they’re a big deal, but I wouldn’t want to live by a fault line.
By the way, whereabouts michigan? My parents would never ever let me Kokonvene, but I was just wondering.
[We try to keep specifics about locations off the blog, so let’s leave it at “Michigan” — Rosanne]
We get tornado warnings all the time, and occasionally tornado watches. Last week I was out for ice cream with my friends, and when we left the store we were like “oh hey tornado siren. Wonder how long that’s been going on” and drove home (I can’t even hear the siren at my house though, whoops). Apparently a bunch of families went to their basements, but I walked into the house and was like “Hey dad thanks for warnign me about the tornado.”
“What tornado?”
“The siren’s going off.”
“*turns on weather* Oh, I guess there is a storm.”
To be fair there was NO wind at all outside, and it drizzled for 5 min. It was a few towns north of us that were having the storms and winds and stuff, our alert went off by mistake *eyeroll*
But really there’s not all that much to worry about, there’s a lot of warnings but the chance you’ll get hit by one is actually low. Some places get torn apart every now and then, and it’s those you see on the news. But there’s only one or two of those a year and we get warnings every other week.
We did have a microburst right near my house once though, lots of trees went down.
Why hello there, everyone!
Re: storms: There have been some vicious ones lately. Yesterday brought flash flood and severe thunderstorm watches in the evening (we watched Star Trek in our living room with massive windows, ignoring every piece of indoor thunderstorm safety advice ever). The day before saw a torrential rainstorm with no lightning or thunder but pouring rain that flattened our new plants. Oh, well. I dislike living in Tornado Alley.
Anyway, I popped in to ask if anyone was going to camp here in Minnesota in late July. There’s this science camp at [Snip! –Admin.] (that may be snipped) [Yep. –Admin] where you research either behavioral biology, neuroscience, geology, or physics. It’s three weeks long, like CTD. There are only 48 people attending (including me), and I was wondering if anyone here would be there.
P.S. I’ve started watching Doctor Who – I started at season 1 episode 1, ignoring everybody’s advice, but so far I like it.
Where were these awesome biology camps when i was in middle and high school! I had traditional outdoorish ones which were fun, but it’d have been nice to try one of those as well.
Oddly enough, I haven’t been to very many any camps like that. I guess I’m an indoorsy nerd (like there’s another kind ).
Hey.
I don’t have much of an inclination to post a whole bunch on here anymore, but I thought I’d drop in and say hi to the GAPAs and everyone. Not a lot seems to have changed; the R&R thread is still going strong, Harry Potter is everyone’s BFF and Rebecca seems to be doing fantastical things with her PhotoShop. So, hi! And bye!
Hi! I haven’t seen you in certain posting frequently anywhere, come to think of it.
Beavo!
Hello there, Beavo. Don’t worry about your lack of inclination–I’m sure we can get you addicted again in no time.
I protest! Harry Potter isn’t MY BFF.
Hi Beavo. -hugs-
BEAVO! Glorious to see you again. *bows*
Beavo! Hello!
Beavo! Nice to see you here.
GAPAs, there’s something up with MB. I can’t find my chess game with Enceladus in the search results, no matter what tag combination I try, (Enceladus, SudoRandom, Chess Enceladus, Chess SudoRandom, SudoRandom vs. Enceladus, converging gravatars, etc.) and when I try to access it from the link it takes me to the Summer Solstice thread (which doesn’t have a title or any body text, strangely). Are you trying some new software or something? Or did our chess game just get deleted?
Sudo: Nobody had moved for more than a month, so we took the game offline as explained in https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=7479 . I’ve reinstated it.
Oh, sorry. Well, here I go now.
Yes. A UK exchange student from college just came to my door and asked if my dad or mum was there.
Hey!
So, I’m checking in for a few moments before I turn off the computer again. I’ve been on too long already. *sigh* AND I NEED TO SLEEP AND GET MY LAUNDRY. CURSE YOU COMPUTER, FOR SUCKING UP ALL MY TIME.
Anyway. Kokon was awesome, trip back to Erie was good, now we’re leaving for Toronto. Whee!So no intarwebz for awhile most likely.
That’s pretty much it.
Also, I am very awkward and don’t know how to react when random guys hit on me. >.< And yes, he was trying to pick me up, I'm not just being conceited and thinking that because a guy talked to me he must like me. I've talked to plenty of guys who didn't ask for my number of say they could take me out partying. Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! 0.o
Believe me, random guys hitting on one is something of an occupational hazard of being female, especially young adult female, though be no means exclusively. It still happens to me from time to time, and after all these years I have yet to figure out the best way of dealing with it. Some individuals simply will not be dissuaded with polite suggestions, so one has to be uncomfortably direct. (Strangely enough, it can be easier to deal with in a foreign language, where one doesn’t have sufficient vocabulary to be other than blunt.)
On the whole, though, I wouldn’t take the attention seriously (unless there’s something creepy about the situation). The act of randomly hitting on people always says much more about the hitter than the target.
Today is fun so far. I’m doing lots of reading.
Any day I get to do lots of reading for fun is a good day.
Ouch! My neck hurts from looking up at my Fixed Desktop!
My computer’s back! Yay!
I’m going to be doing silk screening at this camp I’m at. It’s epic. I did a picture of a pair of angry eyes, with the words “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” under them. We’re going to make posters & T- Shirts, and paste the posters around the building. I hope to claim an entire wall.
You should do one with a picture of some guy and make the caption “YOU ARE WATCHING BIG BROTHER”.
IN CAPITALIST RUSSIAN FEDERATION, YOU WATCH BIG BROTHER!
Oh, good one! Maybe we should add that to Musery Loves Company.
(By the way, I spent a semester studying in Soviet Russia when it existed, and there it was definitely a case of Big Brother watching you.)
Heck, Britian’s gone pretty Big Brother. Have you seen how many security cameras they have up in public places?
So I hear.
Come to think of it, the Soviet Big Brother did more listening than watching. Bugs and wiretaps were easier to install than cameras and were assumed to be everywhere. If you wanted to have a private conversation with someone, you’d take a walk in the park. What a strange place it was.
Yes, my parents grew up in the USSR (they even have old passports from there!). They’ve told me that when they were at university, every once in a while during a conversation people would lean over and tap the wall/electric socket and say: “Right, comrade Mayor?” (except in Russian, so it didn’t sound so ridiculous.)
And it’s still an odd place, in my opinion.
After a wave of vandalism against the cameras, Britain even installed cameras to watch the cameras.
No, seriously.
IN CAPITALIST RUSSIAN FEDERATION, PROLES LIE IN HOPE!
Ironic, isn’t it? To have cameras watching cameras?
In capitalist America, hope abandons you!
In capitalist America, Apple buys you!
In capitalist America, mirror breaks you!
In capitalist America, penny flattens you!
In capitalist America, advertisement watches you!
In capitalist America, Facebook browses you!
I might buy it.
Yeah, but we can only do one.
I made a really awesome Kokopelli for president picture, a picture of kokopelli all made out of the words kokopelli for president (or some variation thereof, such as “koko for prez”) If I had a scanner, I’d send it in.
Silk screening?! *envious* You should come to this sailing camp Nym and I do, I’ll send you an email if you wish! ( Please don’t snip me, GAPAs. )
What is big brother? like the Doctor who season one ep. (Rose season one) with the games station and the disinigrating thing and captian Jack nude (luna probably remembers that one :D…..Kidding, Luna!) or is there actually something existant called “Big Brother”
Big Brother is from 1984, a person/ organization that watches over everyone, constantly. En represents how much surveillance there is in the world.
Ooh, I just failed… my first thought at seeing your post in the recent comments bar was “Doctor Who?”, then I actually clicked on it and saw the rest of the post. FAIL.
(Also- I figured out how to use GIMP! And yesterday because I was bored I made a reallllly random picture with GIMP consisting of a picture I took at the lake, the TARDIS, and an eye. XD I was extremely bored….)
I realized I made a really great and sneaky joke completely unintentionally.
In one story I wrote, there are two astronauts named Major Jack Swiftwater and Captain Tom McNamara.
If you switched their titles around, you’d have Major Tom and Captain Jack.
*laughs*
*cracks up laughing* That should go on the WIN thread.
*facepalm*
I didn’t get it- I thought of Jack Harkness. Jack Sparrow didn’t even occur to me.
*double facepalm*
That’s not who you were talking about. Wow… I’m stupid.
*had not heard of either Bowie song*
“Captain Jack” is a song by Billy Joel; the title refers to drug use (which the song condemns, by the way). Major Tom is the point-of-view character of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”.
And then, in Ashes to Ashes (another Bowie song), “We all know Major Tom’s a junkie.”
No, it’s “We know Major Tom’s a junkie”, no “all” in there.
Ashes to ashes, fun to funkie, we know Major Tom’s a junkie, strung out in heaven on high, bringing an all time low…. I think that’s right. Might not be.
Well, neither of my characters is on drugs, although McNamara says at one point that if he’d realized people would make David Bowie jokes around him all the time for being an astronaut named Tom (Who later disappears on a mission, although he comes back), he’d have changed his name.
I actually was thinking of Jack Sparrow and not of the song in that case.
Oh, I also thought Kai meant Jack Sparrow. Well, he’s probably hotter, anyway.
Captain Jack Harkness was the only one that occured to me.
Somebody should write fanfiction in which the two Captain Jacks meet.
We all know where that would end up, of course. *cough*
Hm, maybe that wasn’t such a good idea after all.
Five months later, they’re both immortal and swashbuckling their way across space and time. (And probably dating, assuming Depp was right about the character he plays.)
Five months? more like five minutes!
Five minutes? More like five seconds!
Five seconds? More like five milliseconds!
Five milliseconds? More like five nanoseconds!
(sorry for all the PoPo I started….)
Is “five months later” a Doctor Who in-joke? Because I’ve seen you using that phrase a lot.
Hi everyone! I currently have a mouth full of metal, so excuse me if I’m a little grumpy… :/
Poor Starr! *huggles*
Thanks. *huggles some more* Seriously, though, it’s not really that bad…my mouth is a little sore (Which I expected) but getting the braces on didn’t hurt at all, which was good. I just look ridiculous. *sigh*
*More huggles*
You do NOT look ridiculous, and no one will think you look ridiculous. Braces are normal. However, *choklit* and good luck with regards to getting them off soon. *hugs*
Ha, I suppose you’re right…thanks, P_M. The worst part is only being able to eat soft foods, because right now I can barely chew…which means I’ve been eating yogurt, jello, and applesauce the last day or two. And I don’t mind any of those foods, but they’re getting old…. *stops complaining*
Haha, when I first got my braces my mom didn’t seem to get it, so I had McDonald’s chicken nuggets immediately after getting braces. After that, the pain didn’t seem to bother me.
Oh, and as for all the eating restrictions? I ignored them… I had popcorn, hard candies, soft candies, etc. while I had braces and I got them removed early because they were working so well. So never fear, you won’t break a tooth if you have some popcorn.
Try oatmeal. It comes in many flavors!
*hugs and ice cream*
It’ll get better, don’t worry… Do they hurt? Think about it this way, you’ll have nice teeth after a few years, and you have a right to complain to everyone!
I came up with a really cool concept for a computer game- I even went so far as to make a faux game box for it. I think Kai would like this game a lot. The game is called “Luna”. Here’s the idea:
It takes place in the ’60s, during the space race. You play as a country, hoping to reach the moon first. The easier levels would have you playing as the US or Russian Federation, both of which already had space travel. Somewhat harder levels would include high technology countries that didn’t have space travel, but could develop it, like the UK or most of Europe. Harder levels would be countries like Japan that industrialized quickly, but didn’t have the best technology. Finally, the hardest levels would be third world countries, where there was limited technology and resources.
More coming later, I have to go to bed. D:
I had a similar idea where it would be a strategy game with different “factions” that were countries/agencies/corporations, based on what I’ve seen of my brothers playing the Total War strategy games.
Within a faction, there would be three “modes” in which objectives could be completed. Most of the strategy play is in “Administrator” mode, as the head of your faction’s space effort, giving orders, laying out plans, and working for influence with politicians. (The equivalent of the mode in the Total War games where you see your empire on a map and handle governance, construction and major troop movements)
But certain feats would require going into “Astronaut/Cosmonaut” mode to do things like steering towards a landing or docking, or “Engineer” mode, to chose solutions to design problems or give astronauts/cosmonauts advice on what to do. (That might actually be better as a fourth “Flight Director” mode…) These would be the equivalent of the mode in the Total War games where you zoom in to act as the general on a specific battlefield. Like in Total War, you can have the computer automatically resolve these, but that usually results in failure.
If the actual 60s space race game was really popular, I thought you could do an expansion pack for the 70s and 80s focusing on the robotics missions conducted in that decade, with the goal of sending probes to as many planets and other bodies as possible before the decade was out, with planet-specific objectives to be accomplished along the way. This would also introduce a “Controller” roll where the player guides a probe through rendezvouses, navigation, encounters and landings as a controller on Earth.
Because nobody likes game developers to switch things up TOO much, there would also be several human missions in the expansion pack, letting you build space stations for the first time. The ultimate final feat of these missions would be a joint mission with your opposing faction, like the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.
If people wanted a proper sequel, there would be a second full game set in the 80s and 90s focusing on construction of infrastructure in low-Earth orbit, with different feats, like building a space station, having space telescopes for different frequencies and creating GPS and communications satellite networks.
A mission would be worth more the more factions are involved, like the ISS being worth more than a station built only by the Japanese and Russian factions, which would in turn be worth more than a Russian-only station like Mir. There would also be more robotic missions, which would be harder because you’d be driving rovers instead of just moving through space.
An expansion pack to the second game would introduce commercial spaceflight companies as factions for the first time, but with more limited resources and more modest objectives.
Yes, I’ve put a lot of thought into this. 53 years of history in two games and two expansion packs.
1) Space Age: To the Moon!
1.5) Space Age: Rise of the Robots
2) Space Age: All Together Now
2.5) Space Age: New Millenium
Wow. That is well described.
Continuing mine…
After achieving spaceflight and reaching the moon, the game wouldn’t end there. It would continue much like real life, except that the space race fever about people wouldn’t stop, and the main mission in the 70’s would be reaching Mars. Of course, the game wouldn’t stop for you if you hadn’t reached the moon by 1969, you’d keep trying for the moon while everyone else tries for Mars. Then, the plot of the game would differ significantly from real life.
After Mars, that country expands into other countries. Most of the world becomes a few power playing factions, like the Russian Federation, North America, South America, Europe, and the Pacific Powers (Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Polyneisa, ect.) Each would have a different goal, such as building as many space stations as possible, creating an actual colony, reaching Neptune, or something like that. This would be in the 80’s during the game.
The first faction to achieve it’s goal would take over the Earth, controlling it in different ways that fit how the player has governed. The last part of the game would be the hardest. You’d have to keep your nation together, get the people interested and involved, and gather the resources to do one project- leave the solar system and land on an exo-moon. (That’s why it’s called Luna!). This is in the 90’s. (I wish.)
Along the way, space flight wouldn’t be your only concern. The US would have to be fighting the Vietnam war, and of course there will always be population unrest wherever the player controls. It would be more a simulation of Alternate Universe history rather than a race into space. It would play a lot like Civilization, but also in some respects like Spore, especially with the factions during the 80’s.
Do you want me to send the game box pictures I made in?
Sure, totally, I’d love to see!
I really like that idea, Enc!
So basically…
What do I do with all my ideas for my plot-thingy? Should I do the bare minimu and y’all can RPG/RRR? Or do I compile everything with all inter-personal relationships and details and what have you, and go like that, a bit more restricted but with all the established facts?
Please reply soon. I don;t have much time, as you all know.
No RPG/RRR because it will a) die or b) boom so that none of the busier MBers can keep up and consequently will drop out FOREVER. Sad.
I think the second sounds better, but I’m actually quite confused and wondering if perhaps we are thinking of different things. What established facts? Did I miss something?
I agree with Alice: nor RPG or RRR. Just write it in whichever way you want it and you can just stop by and ask us for extra detail.
So, I was just on the phone with Shadowfire, and she told me she’d recently become obsessed enough with doctor who to think of Jack Harkness and not Jack Sparrow when she hears the phrase “Captian Jack” I told her I don’t give a cake about Jack Sparrow, and, as an illustration of my obbsessions, when I hear the phrase “Captain Jack” I think immediately of Jack Harkness/Doctor Who and immediately after of MB…by a show of hands, how many of you are Jack Harkness crazed again? I don’t even need to wait for any of you to reply to know there are many of you…and even more Doctor Who people…..I love MB!!!
Me. I *always* think Harkness when I hear “cap’n jack”. Ever since I first introduced myself to DW back in October.
Funny, I am not surprised by this revelation.
I would have been surprised if you had been surprised. XD
Cellos are so expensive.
Also hard to transport and could be used as a murder weapon…
oh, honey. Believe me, it only gets worse.
:/ Are you looking to buy one?
I just got a new cello case! Orange.
Yeah, agreed. So are bows, mine snapped while I was playing Solo and Ensemble and I had to buy a new one…it’s great but prices, gah.
I’ve had an Eastman 100 for 4 years and now realize I have outgrown a half size and need a full size. So, instead of renting which would cost more, I’d buy an Eastman 305. 2200 altogether. Ouch.
Ah, I played an Eastman 305 in school, it was a nice instrument!
I wish I had more RRRs in my life. Actual active RRRs. I think this is because I love to write but am fail at coming up with things to write about.
Hi everyone!
I’m posting here in Holland, and I’ve been having a great time. I’ve done a lot of biking (without a helmet, like a real Dutch kid), and had pannekoek (a big, thick pancake with various foods often in it). I’m having a great time, and I hope everyone’s having a great time too!
(And now I have to go, because my mom’s nagging me, and it’s 10 PM here.)
Good to hear from you, SL! Keep on having fun!
*is envious* That sounds awesome, though! Have a great trip!
Bad SilverLeopard, not wearing a helmet.
I hate getting my period and not knowing if my stomach hurts because I’m having cramps or because I’m actually hungry.
At least for once I can actually stay home, lie down and go to the bathroom whenever I need to without needing to excuse myself. And now that my mom’s home from work we can go for a walk.
*hugs and chocolate* *more hugs*
*huggles* I sympathieze….as for me, I only sort of have that issue cause I get crampy/PMSy between 1 and 2.5 weeks before mine starts, so I know when to expect it without having to track it…which actually sort of sucks cause it means I spend a disproportionate quanity of time in some kind of pain, but at least I can tell when I’m cramping…anyway, that was a total tanget….*more huggles* *magical Harry Potter chocolate*
Ouch. My periods don’t last so long, but sometimes they’re really bad and I also feel really cold and nauseous. And if you get them while traveling…
You are all very kind.
sympathies and huggles! i just found out that my uncle’s wedding is while i’m on my period. blarrgh.
to quote a text i just sent, however, “doctor who puts everything in perspective. i may have cramps, but at least i’m not dying of radiation running through a petrified forest to save my gpa who’s a dalek prisoner”
so that’s what i recommend
actually, every time i’m on my period i think of a tree grows in brooklyn. when i first started, i had a massively messed-up stomach (lactose intolerant, but i was at that funny in-between stage where i was starting to grow out of it – i could have -some- dairy, but not much, and i was always having too much and getting awful awful stomachaches) and i had killer cramps from hell. was up all night in the bathroom trying not to die, and the book i happened to be just starting at the time was a tree grows in brooklyn. read the whole thing that night. perspective.
Ugh, I sympathize as well… *hugs and choklit*
I have three words to say:
GO RED SOX!
And two additional words:
GO SEATTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES! I LOVE YOU, SEATTLE!
I LOVE SEATTLE TOO, FOR MANY REASONS but, pray tell, why do you love seattle?
That was such a fail…I misread SEATTLE as BEATLES. *facepalm*
It’s okay, I once read “kidded” as “killed”. (No, Pete Conrad did NOT kill Gordon Cooper, FYI.)
Because they beat the Yankees! *laughs maniacally*
Vlogbrothers just did a video about Phineas Gage
my first thought was “HAH! old news!” *feels smugly museperior*
I saw that! I felt museperior, too. Although, when I saw the article in Muse, I was very disappointed because I had already read the entire book from which the article was excerpted.
But yeah, yay for knowledge!
ooh that’s pretty cool actually, apparently this couple had a bunch of old pictures and were scanning them into flickr, and they had this one that they thought was a whaler with a harpoon and it actually turned out to be the only existing picture of phineas gage. here’s the vid (with random spaces), zap if you like but vlogbrothers are about as muserly as it gets
[Don’t have time to look at it now, hence the snip. But I’m sure it’s easily searchable on YouTube. –Admin.]
I went to the UBS bank in Connecticut today with girl scouts, though only one other girl from my troop went. This particular building has the largest trading floor in the world, and we took a tour around it. It was truly an amazing thing to see… There were so many people working so hard! (Except for one guy, he was watching the world cup. :P)
~~~
The other thing that has been really awesome this summer is volunteering. It’s so rewarding to work with the animals, especially the really cute blue jay chick, and even the hissing cockroaches. Very cool stuff going on this summer.
Thanks for the pies. I sort of forgot how to do the HTML and I’m lazy, so *pies* to everyone, too.
I dunno, everything’s so fast paced and I can’t seem to keep up. But I’ll drop in every once in a while with comments. It’s summer, I got time.
Enc – 107: Sure, why?
Wow. I pictured you as 15, 16.
Ditto. o.o
Federer lost!! 0_o
Starr – Yes, I’m late here, but you should not get an iPod touch. I made that mistake :/ If you get an iDevice, get an iPhone – without activating it for service if you can. It is worth shelling out a few extra bucks for a camera, and if you get iPhone 4, you get iOS4, which includes multitasking. iOS4 is only available with all features on iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPod touch 3rd gen, and iPhone 4. I have an iPod touch 2nd gen. and therefore did not receive the full update. If you can’t get an iPhone without paying for service, buy the iPod touch 3rd generation. BUT YES, get one.
SFTDP (Again)
And then we can challenge each other in Tap Tap Revenge 3 – my fingers fly, I shall not be defeated.
Wait, you’re able to do that? (Regarding the iPhone but with no service thing.) Aww… *wishes she had known* I do enjoy having an iPod Touch though, it’s just irritating when there’s a lack of Wifi in your current location.
Well, my sister just bought an iPod Touch 3rd generation which does include the iOS4, (Not Em, one of “the younger ones”. :0) so I’ll probably be, err, BORROWING it when I can. And I might get one for myself if I really like it.
And sorry for the double post, but when my dad was considering getting an iPhone, I don’t think there was an option as to whether or not you got the data plan. I think that was mandatory with the iPhone. Then again, that was probably about a year ago, so it might have changed with the iPhone 4 or something.
WOOHOO LOVE THE GRAPHIC
check out those sexay people :3
silverleopard — sounds fun! biking would be amazing, i remember in amsterdam there were so many people on bikes everywhere! i wish i had been able to stay longer, jet lag greatly affected my impressions i think…hmm
anyway have fun!
museperior…..! THIS IS A GREAT WORD
IN AXA NEWS i will be gone until the 4th at least and the 9th at most, party times are afoot and I need to finish getting ready to leave. here’s farewell while i’m sane, museblog! interwebs may be available over the next week but if i post it will be all caps and perhaps i will take that elsewhere.
Oh wow, I love the graphic! Looks like you guys had a great time! Nice tri-corner hats.
Meh, slept ’til 11:00 this morning…I love summer. Although next week I start camp and I’ll have to resume getting up at eight? nine? (either one is far too early in my opinion!) to catch the bus. It’s a lovely camp though, all arts and academics. I’ll be taking an Animation class this time as well as Computer Graphics, during which I hope to learn the ways of the ever-elusive GIMP software…
I just rediscovered the Muse Fanfic I was writing. I think I’ll start working on it again.
I love that picture and those ThinkGeek t-shirts.
I drew a comic today, and I tried to scan it and upload it to a website, but no matter what I did, it was too big a file. It went like this:
(Erin and I are reading a book that says “Transformers” on the cover)
Me: “There sure are a lot of Transformers who turn into space shuttles.
Erin: “Yeah, but they’re all such bright colors when the real one is black and white. Doesn’t anybody notice?”
(Two astronauts standing in front of a red-and-orange space shuttle [That has a white tank, because ha ha, orange shuttle, white tank, it’s backwards!])
First astronaut: “They’re painted the shuttle…”
Second astronaut: “It looks sweet!”
OH MAN LOOK IT’S ME UP AT THE TOP! and my hawt lover fern (her tall bf can’t have her any more, she’s mine) and our beloved commodore grant. what fun
I love the picture! Looks like you had tons of fun!
Fiddler’s expression is so funny.
Beautiful hats. I love and WANT them.
Ditto!
I adore the schrodinger’s cat shirts…Who all is in the picture by the way? Wait, Ebeth already answered that. Never mind (reading is such a good life skill) Who has the purple hat? I may have to come and steal it, but given that you all are very far away most likely not. Anyway….okay I just lost my train of thought.
Fiddler’s got the purple hat, I believe. And yes it is quite lovely. I’ll come with you to steal it, Clare!
I’m leaving tomorrow morning for Switzerland! There’s a boarding school there that has a summer program in French, and I’m going to be there for the next month. I’m pretty excited about it–really nervous too, though–but the upshot of it all is that, although I think I’ll have wifi, I might not be around as much for the next month. Hopefully I’m wrong, but if not, such is the cause. (Also, my mom is yelling at me to finish packing, so I’ll elaborate on this post later.)
we unfortunately do not own those hats, we were just trying them on. sadness.
HAHAHAHA I looooove that picture! I want to be like ebeth when I grow up.
No, you don’t. Ebeth is creepy. (But in a good way!)
Yes, I do. *cackles*
Ebeth is amazazing!
Awesome picture. You guys rock… *wants one of those hats*
Gah, all of a sudden miss MB. Personal note: Must post more.
