    Double, double, toil and trouble
    Fire burn and cauldron bubble
    Double, double, toil and trouble
    Something wicked this way comes.

Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
    Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting,
    Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing.

    Double, double, toil and trouble
    Fire burn and cauldron bubble
    Double, double, toil and trouble
    Something wicked this way comes.

In the cauldron boil and bake,
    Fillet of a fenny snake,
Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
    Witches’ mummy, maw and gulf.

Double, double, double, double toil and trouble
    Fire burn and cauldron bubble
Double, double, double, double toil and trouble
    Fire burn and cauldron bubble

    Something wicked this way comes.

    Hehe. :)

  11. Hello, me is amy.

Skool is skool. What else is there to say? I hate it, because I screw up. Not grade-wise. I get good grades. But Im horrible a talking to people. Im irritating sometimes. I dont mean to be, but I just accidently say stuff or do stuff and I hate it. I no one at school is very interesting. And a lot of them are really self- absorbed. And I hurt those who arent by being opinionated.
    Sorry. Bad day.

  12. #24, it’s ‘owlet’s wing’ not ‘howlet’s wing’. Of course, that could have just been a typo. Sorry, since it’s in Harry Potter, I’m picky about it being right. Even if it was only in the movies.

  13. 34, yes, something like that.

Today would have been my dog’s tenth birthday if she hadn’t died on November 20. On the ninteenth she failed in one of her porch escape tricks while we were at the horrible goblet of fire movie. (Yes, that is one of the reasons I don’t like that movie.) She was hanging upside down by her hips for who knows how long. We brought her to the vet, but she didn’t make it through the night. Anyway, this would’ve been her tenth birthday today. She was like a little sister to me. I miss her. I cried myself to sleep last night. What I find interesting is that I had a cold in Nov. when she died, and I have a cold today. Right, anyway. We don’t know the exact date she was born, just that it was mid-April and we chose today, the 12th, to celebrate. I miss her.

  24. Queen J. that’s the weirdest assignment I’ve ever heard of. Oh, except this thing my brother had to do, which was to go the library with this piece of paper and get all the library ladies to sign it. Then he had to check out a book, any book. It still sounds more enjoyable than translating Bob Dylan into German, though. *shudder* I’m not the biggest Bob Dylan fan. That song in particular is just too… I don’t know, whiny. Michelle, I feel for you. My dog is like my best friend and since I’m home skooled, he’s with me pretty much all day. To any idiot who says dogs aren’t beneficial, I say go suck an egg. my mom and i went for a walk today. we were going to just go around on some streets but then we went through this development that had an aura — you know how places have a certain feeling you get whenever you think about them, well, i get that alot like in my old neighborhood we had an aura and now its gone which really bums me out because i love this house to death, unlike the olde one . . . — anyway, and then we cut through this field of wet clover because we were following the power lines, which go right next to my street, and it was raining so we were wet and the clover was wet and my jeans got really soaking, and then we crossed this little ravine where there was a stream and fifty million prickers and stuff. then we found this woodchip path that went by this REALLY PRETTY white house, well, it wasn’t that pretty really, but it had an auraX10 and we were trying not to be seen because there were No Trespassing signs everywhere, but then we cut through these cornfields and got back to our house. It totally rocked my world babyyyyyyyy ok done now . . . anyway, it was an adventure, probly the biggest one ill ever have . . . actually, if you count going on the Skyline Trail at Hawk Mountain, that was a bigger one. whatever. i’ll leave now.

I was thinking about starting my own newspaper, called “The Weekly Gripe.” Have my friends do some columns, write articles about how the government has screwed up this week.

Speaking of the government, I was surprised at how many people didn’t know who J. Edgar Hoover was. They thought I was talking about Herbert Hoover. I think everyone should know who J. Edgar Hoover was. Just so they know what the epitome of a bad man in a high place is.

Instead of a ball, you use a special disk-shaped stone with a handle, and instead of knocking down pins, you try to slide the stone down the ice so that it comes to rest in the middle of a target. As it glides slowly along, other team members skate ahead and try to keep it on course (or change its course) by sweeping the ice in front of it with brooms.

Strunk and White’s great little book The Elements of Style explains it well. I don’t think it’s online, but everybody should have it. It takes half an hour to read and will change your life (yes, even more than the Shins).

The University of Chicago style manual’s online FAQs also tackles the subject of that/which, in a slightly wordier way.

As an editor, of course, I enjoy reading style manuals. Fans of British English should see what the British news magazine The Economist has to say about differences between British and American style.

I was thinking, which is always a bad idea. It’s funny (funny-strange) how the link policy here is so different from that of the gaboomba- here links are discouraged while when we were using the gaboomba Robert would actually add them to our posts in case someone didn’t know what something was or something. It’s also funny-strange how in the gaboomba three weeks could go by without anyone posting while here if three hours go by without posts people get all “hey, where is everybody? Why aren’t my posts getting posted?”. Hence I don’t know who half of the people here are or what we’re talking about in most of the threads.

He was eight feet tall, apparently made of foam rubber, and coloured pink with yellow spots, if memory serves. Whoever was inside him obviously couldn’t see anything. He wandered round various television programmes burbling “blobby blobby blobby” in a robotic voice, and bumping into things. He presented the most embarrassingly pointless spectacle to darken the annals of British televison in a very long time. By comparision, Barney the Purple Dinosaur is a paragon of erudition and gravitas.

I’m going to have to put the kettle on. The memory is too vivid.

Now that that’s all settled, whe can all obsessive-fangirl-ize about Eats, Shoots, and Leaves. Ah, the wondrous sound of the words ‘full stop.’ So much nicer than dingy little ‘period.’ Not that ‘period’ isn’t a perfectly fine word or anything, but ‘full stop’ is so much more round and beautiful.

  98. I’m going to England this summer! Next weekend I’m having a partay! I’m learning to drive stick-shift! It’s really hard! I keep stalling out! There is no cohesion between those three subjects! Why am I ending all of these sentences with exclamation points! I’m going to stop and move on to something!

There is a book coming out that heralds the decay of society. It’s called “The Alphabet of Manliness,” and it’s by a man named George Ouzounian, more commonly known as Maddox the Pirate. He runs his own website, the most commonly visited website out there. I’m not going to post the url because most of his material is really offensive and inappropriate for most of the people on here.

Close, “sweet melpomene.” J. Edgar Hoover was the tyrannical head of the FBI for 68 years too long. (Yes, that’s how long he was head of the FBI.) Evil man! A horrible irony: he violated the civil rights of civil rights leaders. He did this in probably a lot of ways, but I’m only aware of his tapping Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X’s telephones.

anyway, i just woke up and i am still hyper from the partay last night. i was there all night.

it was undoubtedly the froodiest partay i have ever attended.

the food was excellent, though i had no idea what it was. very spicy for the most parte, but some of it was quite sweet.

the indian musick pwned. i seriously need to get some of it. all of it had an amazing beat and very flowy rythym. there were even dancing routines, which were brilliant! then everyone danced and i even managed the electric slide. [and, as usual, jumped and headbanged to “everytime” but that’s a long story…]. there was this really cool dance to the indian musick that involved hitting sticks together in two big lines, but i couldn’t get the “hang” of it.

and the womon had the most amazing outfits. positively flamablamablous! they were really bright, mostly had skirts and belly-shirts, and were heavily beaded so that they literally shone. they also had shawl-like-scarf things attached….and they wore henna tattoos.

in all, coolest partay in the history of all things celebrational.

  132. We were in Juneau and Sitka Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, ’cause my sister’s in a youth symphony that travelled there.

We flew to Sitka on Friday. It’s really pretty there. The vegetation is quite a bit different than it is in the part of Alaska where I live. There’s hardly any deciduous trees in Sitka/Juneau and the conifers are a much lighter brighter green. Where I live we mostly have only black spruce, and they’re tall, but straggly looking. We wandered around town most of the afternoon, looking for somewhere to eat, and for our hotel, since we were dropped off at Totem Pole park, on the opposite side of town. The weather was surprisingly sunny. In both Juneau and Sitka, it usually rains almost constantly. However, all three days we were there, it was either sunny or cloudy with no rain.

On Saturday, we took a six hour boat ride on a catamaran from Sitka to Juneau. It was lots of fun. We saw an otter, a couple of humpback whales, and a couple of harbour porpoises. The coolest thing we saw, though, was a pod of at least 50 killer whales. It was so cool. They stopped the boat in the middle of the superpod (that’s what they’re apparently called when they’re that big. And superpods are apparently an extremely uncommon thing to see.) for about fifteen minutes or so. There was at least 50 swimming around the boat. Some of them were kinda far in the distance, and some where just a few yards from the boat. It was awesome!

That afternoon, we went on a short drive around Juneau, which if you don’t already know this is the capital of Alaska, and only the third largest city in AK. We drove by the capitol building, the governor’s mansion, and the government buildings.

Sunday afternoon we flew back home. Then we drove all over trying to find somewhere that was open so we could eat dinner, ’cause we didn’t just want to eat leftovers at home ’cause it was Easter. Finally we went to Fred Meyers and got fried chicken and jo-jos. We’d stopped at Carrs first, but they didn’t have any hot food. I s’pose ’cause it was Easter.

Oh, yeah. Friday and Saturday night. The youth symphony my sister’s in performed concerts.

It was lots of fun. ‘Specially seeing the humongous pod of whales!

  134. y4hpb, I really hope your mom’s surgery goes well! I know what it’s like to have your mom go away for surgery. A couple or so years ago my mom had to have surgery on her back ’cause she has scoliosis, and when she was a teenager she had a rod put in, but it needed replaced ’cause it had got messed up. So she was gone for at least a couple weeks I think, to get a new rod put in and to have like most of her vertebrae fused.

It sucks not having your mom around. I wish your mom luck and hope her surgery is succesful, and that she’s gone as little time as possible! And that the time she’s gone passes quickly. Unfortunately, it will probably seem like an eternity to you. At least the day she’s having surgery probably will.

Anyways, I hope it goes good, and that she doesn’t have to have any other surgeries!

  156. Okay, this is funny guys. I was doing my literature homework on “The Monkey’s Paw” and the last assignment was to write a story using the basic plot structure of “The Monkey’s Paw”. I was randomly inspired, and started writing. I got about halfway through when I saw the words “Create a plot structure only”

I think you might be interested in what I wrote. i did go slightly overboard.

Bobbie and Rosie were an old couple living in a little house in an anonymous patch of woods just outside of an anonymous town, in New Jersey, because New Jersey is so anonymous it is now famous for its anonymity. They were in hiding because a group of Musers, or fans of Muse Magazine, were in the habit of mobbing their house, screaming wildly, and demanding autographs, which is the kind of thing that generally only happens in overy-dramatic television and various peoples’ imagination, but nevertheless it was happening quite frequently nowadays to poor Bobbie and Rosie. The reason for all of this was their involvement in a fan page for such Musers, which had made them quite popular indeed.

One evening as Bobbie was sitting quietly at his computer and deleting links that might possibly be potentially dangerous to those innocent young minds, or what innocence was left in such minds, he noticed a particularly strange link that hadn’t been posted by any known posters. There was no name entered, and the email was invalid. It was probably just more spam. Angrily, he zapped the whole post, but not before opening a window to the link. What he saw surprised even old Bobbie, who had seen many strange websites in his day.

“Rosie,” he called, “come look at this!”

Rosie was sitting in the corner, and persisting in a lack of knitting or knitting-related activities, which, contrary to popular belief, was not unusual for a woman her age. Instead, she was working on the daily Sudoku, which was causing her considerable frustration and annoyance, so she was quite relived to comply with Bobbie’s request. Setting down her pencil, she walked over to where Bobbie was sitting and looked over his shoulder.

On the screen was, in bold capital letters, “CONGRADULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN GRANTED THREE WISHES!”

“Good grief,” said Rosie, “What a ridiculous advertisement. I can’t even see what they are selling!”

    Suddenly, the screen went black.

“Darn,” muttered Bobbie, “Must’ve pulled the power cord again.” As he bent down to fumble with the tangle of cords and wires, lighting flickered across the screen. Startled, Rosie jumped back. Bobbie looked up at her sudden movement, and said, “What?” Then he noticed the computer screen, which was by now flickering dramatically. As he did, there was a rumble of thunder so loud that the old couple glanced out the window before realizing that the source of the sound was the computer. Red letters scrolled across the screen, “BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR…” and a text box appeared below them with a flashing cursor.

Bobbie hit the mouse button various times, fiddled with the keyboard, and turned the power on and off, but the still-flickering screen stayed unchanged. Both old people stared at the screen in bewilderment. The constant flickering was giving them headaches. The thunder rumbled again, this time louder.

Finally, “You could try typing something in the box,” Rosie suggested nervously.

Bobbie gave this some thought, and sat down in his swivel chair. He ran his hands over the keyboard, tapped a few keys, and quickly deleted the resulting letters. Then, summoning his courage, he typed “I wish the Musers would leave us alone” and clicked the button handily labeled, “Wish”

Both people held their breath as the computer processed the command. Then, as quickly as it had started, the lightening stopped, and the text box disappeared. Bobbie’s computer screen returned to the way it was before the startling occurrence, with the exception of the mysterious window.

righto. that’s it. and if you want to know what happens next, it’s nearly midnight for god’s sake. give me a break.

  157. It is NOT spelled with a K.

It was awesome. I went and saw a HUGE, old Buddha, and it was really cool.(Like 50 foot tall) In Tkyo, I went to the Imperial palace, and I heard this tortured screaming, so I turned to the guide, and he said “oh, they are–how do you say—just practicing” Either that or somebody pissed off the emperor.
We also went and saw a cliff that a 11 year old girl threw herself off:
She was returning from a pilgramage on Enoshima Island when a Monk saw her:
    “Man, she’s pretty”
They fell in LUUUURVE, but soon, something happened and she decided thier luuuurve was in vain, and threw herself into a gorge. The monk, blinded by love, threw himself after her.

We can only assume that solved things.
And no, I have no Idea how old he was.
    urgh…

Amazing! That’s exactly like Rosanne and me, except that we live 3,000 miles apart, she already has a husband, and neither of us has ever spent much time in New Jersey. Apart from that, though–uncanny!

  159. Actually.

Konichiwa is correct, romanized. I can’t find the knaji right now, and I doubt wordpress would allow it in any case.

That’s typical Japanese: violent passion that ends in killing yourself.
    xD

I did knit a sweater once, actually. It’s dark green. It’s resting on a shelf in my closet. Here in California it rarely gets cold enough to wear it. Good ol’ dark green sweater.

I don’t remember the traffic question. I think it must’ve whizzed right past me. What was it?

  162. It was in Part Two, comment 264: why people change lanes so much, and whether it slows traffic down or speeds it up.

I’m sure traffic engineers have investigated that question, and I’d be happy to research it for the Q&A column. From my own experiences, I’d guess that people change lanes a lot more than necessary and that it doesn’t do them as much good as they think. Often I’ll see people weaving impatiently from lane to lane, trying to accumulate minute advantages by hopping ahead of other cars, and then I wind up right beside them at the next traffic light. (They don’t remember me, but I remember them. One thing about aggressive driving: it makes you memorable.)

  163. Daaaaang I meant to say kanji. -can’t spell-

I suppose it is a bit like everyone. xD But Japanese are like that somewhat, out of culture. The suicide rate is higher that the homicide rate. Sad, but true. Though that has a lot to do with the school system. But then again that goes back to the whole drive they have for everyting…hmm.

  164. my mother is a crazy driver. she always tries to get away from the mass of cars, and it doesn’t seem to matter to her whether she has to speed up or slow down to do so.

  165. I have a traffic related question. Why is it that cars have the driver’s seat opposite to the side of the road that one is supposed to drive on? If the seat were on the same side as the lane that the car was to be driven in, you wouldn’t have to block traffic when you wanted to drop something in the postbox. That was an, erm, interesting story, Em. Is the monkeys paw that one Poe story where the people wish for, like, fifty pounds or something and it kills somebody? Or something like that? Well actually, if it is a Poe story, it’s a safe bet that somebody dies, so I guess what I should be asking is: is it a Poe story?

  166. I hate changing lanes. I try to stay in one lane as much as possible. Namely, the right hand lane, ’cause that’s where the slow people are, and every body in the left hand lane is always going 5 to 10 miles over the speed limit, and I go either the speed limit or 5 miles under.

By the way, here in Alaska, you can get your learners permit at age 14, and your driver’s license at age 16. I’m sixteen, and I’ve got to get my license soon, ’cause my permit expires in a couple weeks, and I still haven’t practised parallel parking. That is to say, my parents want me to get my license. Technically, I could get another permit, and then have two more years to practise parallel parking before I get my license…

    I HATE DRIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, anyway, I need to take a practise AP Calc test, to find out that I’ve forgotten all of the Calc I learned, and that I will likely get a 1 on the test. (5 is the best you can get.)

  167. Are they still teaching “The Monkey’s Paw”? They made us read it when I was in school, and even then I thought it was a lot of old rubbish. (Please excuse the uncharacteristic display of heated opinion on the part of your GAPA.) At least I hope they’ve had the sense to retire “The Most Dangerous Game” and “The Lady or the Tiger?” I suppose “The Pit and the Pendulum” is sacrosanct…
