I am curently enjoying the first snow day I’ve had sinse I was in first grade! This is one of my favorite bar jokes.
A duck walks into a bar and asks the bart ender “Got any grapes?'” the bar tender replies ” No we don’t this is a bar.” The next day the duck comes back and once again asks ” Got any grapes?” Once again the bar tender say “No we don’t this is a bar.” On the third day the duck comes back and asks “Got any grapes?” The bar tender who is really ticked off with the duck says ” No we don’t this is a bar and if you ask one more time I’ll staple your bill to the counter. The next day the duck comes back to the bar and asks the bar tender “Got any staples?” the bar tender replies “No” The duck then asks “Got any grapes?”

I LOVE his Cartoon Histories (and the Modern World one too), even more than the Cartoon Guides. That taught me about 80% of what I know about European History.
The Cartoon Histories were HILARIOUS… I hope he’s writing more.

I saw his cartoon guide to physics or something titled similarly. My 9th grade science teacher had it, and one day, when I was bored in class, I read nearly half of it. ‘Twas awesome!

Quite honestly, I intend to believe in the supernatural as long as I live. I mean, I’ve never seen a ghost that turned out to actually be a ghost, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ghosts. There were those wonderful two days when I thought that the thing in the lights booth was a ghost, and then I looked closer.

70- Not always. I don’t think about souls, bodies, supreme powers, or any of that. Now that I do think about it, ghosts are generally acknowledged to be dead people, but I don’t think of them as dead people. I think of them as just sort of being there.

72- *thinks* The first is a classic ghost story, fine, urban myth if you will. It’s also relating the ghost to death. The second is more like what you said. Also, the ghost didn’t do anything, and the story had nothing to do with dead people, and I saw it.
I don’t believe in the really dramatic type, like where the ghost causes more than a reluctance to go to the place where it is. I do believe in ghosts that are just there.

78- Excuse me? My eyes change color overnight, every night, and will change color according to moods. I have blacked, but normally they change between green and grey/blue. Although yesterday they were brownish/green with yellow in them, and today they were light blue. I have never had the same color twice in a row.

I don’t really know if I believe in ghosts or things like that. I believe in paranormal activity, because that is just things that don’t have a scientific explanation, and there are plenty of those.
I don’t get why people think their eyes change color. A lot of my friends claim that their eyes change with their moods or to match their outfit, but I don’t see the difference even when they point it out. Maybe the light or how dilated the pupils are could change the color a little, but it isn’t noticable.

Ghosts…..hmm. I have heard too many stories of really little children saying things that make it seem obvious that they saw ghosts. And these kids are way too young to be telling stories just to freak out their parents. I’ve also talked to people who live in haunted houses. I remember one lady in particular who lives in a town near here in this great old house and several people have seen the ghost that is in her house. It’s been the same ghost, but the people who saw it didn’t know beforehand that others had seen it. Yeah, a bit spooky for my liking.
However, I have slept over Civil War graves and never saw a ghost all that night.

108- You’re right, it probably falls under a general heading of “magic and curses”. And, as Zahi Hawass is always saying, there is NO mummy’s curse! (Well, there are curses written on tombs, but they haven’t ever come true.)
I don’t think Extraterrestrials count as being supernatural. The chemicals for life are very common elsewhere in the universe, so life there would be as natural as life here.

A vampire is a being that used to be human but then became immortal and has to drink blood in order to stay healthy.
A ghost is the soul of a person who has passed away but is trapped on earth.

Sorry for the double post, but I just remembered something!
Once I went on vacation somewhere..I think it was the Florida Keys…and there was this mini-museum thing with a creepy doll, and they said if you took a picture of the doll – whose name was Tom or Thomas – it would steal something from you!
We didn’t take a picture of it, but there were letters from people who had there stuff stolen from them.
They could be fake, but I didn’t take any chances.

111-A vampire is either a person who drinks blood or a zombie that drinks blood. It can sometimes turn into a bat and is solid. It may not have a reflection in mirrors or show up on camera, but it can be seen with the naked eye.
A ghost is the spirit of a person that is still on earth. It is not always seen, but can show up in pictures even if it wasn’t seen at the time. It is not solid, and can go through walls and such.
I don’t believe in vampires and I’m not sure if i believe in ghosts. I think that a lot of it is just a placebo effect.
I believe that there must be intellegent life somewhere else in the universe, but it may or may not have reached earth.

I believe in magic, but only when something odd happens. The ghost in the lights booth– there was no question that it was a ghost (until, of course, it wasn’t). The bees disappearing– I believed in magic. The end of the world as we know it… sure.

For clarification: Animigi is the plural form of Animigus, invented by J.K. Rowling to describe humans that can transform themselves into animals. Werewolves aren’t actually called Animigi because they can’t control their transformations.

Funny you should mention the sock gremlins. There is a slightly different thing in my laundry room, a sock monster, which either eats your socks, or chews them beyond repair.
I don’t really believe in supernatural beings (demons, etc.) For me, that’s getting too close to polytheism, which is seriously against my other beliefs.

Sock gremlins and sock monsters? Hmm, I always figured it was my own messiness and the washing machiene that was to blame.
Oh, and Beavo, alchemists did exsist, they were sort of the precourser of modern scientists, however far modern science has come. Alchemists did however find many things in their research. Nicholas Flamel actually did live, and he wrote of discovering a substance that could turn other metals to gold, or at least something resembling it.
Of course, many quack salesmen used illusions and tricks to “demonstrate” turning metals to gold and thus making money off the gullible public.

Dancergirl saw a TV show about the Key West doll and wrote about it last November on the Scary Stories thread. She said the doll’s name was Robert, though. That seems more plausible to me, somehow.

Um ok, sorry I havnt been able to get on. Ok so I was watching the travel channel the other day (at Halloween they always show stuff about ‘haunted’ houses, and it so much fun to watch) and this thing came on about a ‘possessed doll’. I copied this from a website to tell everyone. Here it goes:
The story begins in the home of Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Otto. The year1896. It was well known the Otto’s mistreated there servants and were not the kindest of people. One such servant, that aided in the care of the couples son, Robert Eugene Gene,(Gene) was said to be versed in the ways of voodoo. She for one reason or the other became very displeased with the Otto’s, and decided to do something about it. As the story goes the servant gave Gene a doll. The doll standing three feet tall, and stuffed with straw. With life like features, that were at first very endearing to Gene. He decided to name the doll “Robert”.
The doll became a constant companion to Gene. It is said that the Otto’s often heard Gene upstairs talking to the doll. This in it self might not have been so bad? The Otto’s were puzzled to hear the boy answering himself in an entirely different voice than his own?
Many Strange things began to occur in the Otto household. Many neighbors claimed to see Robert move about from window to window, when the family were out. Gene began to blame Robert for mishaps that would occur. The Otto’s claimed to hear the doll giggle, and swear they caught glimpses of the doll running about the house.
Gene began to have nightmares and scream out in the night, when his parents would enter the room, they would find furniture over turned, their child in a fright, and Robert at the foot of the bed, with his glaring gaze! “Robert Did It”…. The doll was eventually put up into the attic. Where he resided for many years.
When Gene’s parents died, and the Otto home came to Gene, Robert was rediscovered in the attic. Robert hold on Gene was strong, and from the moment Gene laid eyes on him, Robert’s influence could be again felt. Well Gene’s wife Robert unsettling. One day she decided she had enough of Roberts glare…and returned him to his attic sanctuary. Gene was displeased, and demanding that Robert needed a room of his own where he could see out of the window. He put Robert in the turret room, by a window. It wasn’t long after that Gene’s sanity was questioned?
The citizens of Key West heard about Robert, and his evil doings. Many people walking by the home reported that the doll watched from the turret room, and mocked them as they passed… School children feared walking by the Otto home , in fear of Roberts mean glare.
Gene, himself reported when visiting the turret room, found Robert him in the rocking chair by the turret room window, displeased with his accommodations…home. Finally Gene himself had enough of
But Robert had other plans. Visitors that entered the house could hear something walking back and forth in the attic, and strange giggling sounds. Guests no longer wanted to visit the Otto home.
Gene Otto died in 1972.The home was sold to a new family, and the tale of Robert had died down…
But Robert waited patiently up in the attic to be discovered, once again. The 10 year old daughter of the new owners. Was quick to find Robert in the attic. It was not long before Robert unleashed his displeasure on the child… The little girl claiming that the doll tortured her, and made her life a hell.. Even after more than thirty years later, she steadfastly claims that ” the doll was alive and wanted to kill her.”
Robert, still dressed in his white sailor’s suit and clutching his stuffed lion, lives quite comfortably, though well guarded, at the Key West Martello Museum. Employs at the museum continue to give accounts of Robert being up to his old tricks still today…

hmmm….I don’t really belive in this stuff, but i like to hear stories about supernatural things.
Like once my friend was saying how she went to this old house that’s now a museum with her class and they saw a doll blink and a face in a window.
When I was little I was really scared of aleins for some reason. I think it was because we watched a movie at a camp I went to about someone being abducted by aleins.

As you said, we’re finding new extrasolar planets everyday, and a few of them have been in the Goldilocks Zone (That is, not too hot or too cold for life). In our system alone, we know that there is life on Earth, that it may have existed in the past on Mars, and may exist now on Europa. That’s about three habitable environments in this one system. When it comes to intelligence, we aren’t sure, as there’s only us as an example, but as I said, the unknowness is exciting!

135- I don’t think extraterrestial intelligence is very likely. It takes thousands of years of evolution, and Earth is the only planet we know of that has had a life-supporting environment for that amount of time. Planets in the “Goldilocks Zone” might not be too hot or cold, but there are other factors then temperature, such as atmosphere, water and, geography. What if there’s poisonous gases, little or no water, and volcanoes? It makes it very hard for life to develope and evolve.

I think they’re fascinating. And the effects of untreated diabetes is very simular to the actions of a vampire: gums recede, creating looks of long teeth. The victim starves and is unable to redcieve any nutrition and may have eaten meet and starches like crazy, almost wolflike…The skin pails, the eyes dialate so the victim would find sunlight painful. The victim gives off a sweet smell, and falls into deathlike comas, reviving suddenly as they carried her to the cemetary. Very vampiric….

They sound horrid and the older they get, the less likely it is that they’ll be replaced…There was a high school with one of the aforementioned pa systems and a handful of students who didn’t like the pa system… They decided to do something. Something involved blowing out the speakers. The rumor has it that they got a lovely deep bass humm out of the speakers but didn’t blow them. The next day, the morning announcements were as clean and understandable as could be…

I did indeed start school. It’s . . . different. Actually I fit right in, and I like it for the most part, but having such a set routine is really restrictive. And I’m very thoroughly involved in theater, which is good… Except that as SOON as I get involved in theater, our local theater goes out of business. Luckily the school has a good drama program. But it’s really sad. I loved that theater.
162- That happened to my friend. We were really really good friends despite that fact that she lived in Portland half the time, and then she started wearing makeup and thinking about boys and then we sort of drifted apart . . . Last time I saw her we didn’t really have much in common. We wandered about in the twilight eating blackberries and talking, and then we went in and couldn’t think of anything to say.
I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately. If we were in the same school, with no past memory of each other, would we even be friends?
I still don’t like boys or wear makeup, and the moments when I don’t care what other people think are simply glorious.

Make-up. Well.
I put on a thin line of eye liner for any concerts I’m doing (cause those lights can wreck havoc with appearances), but other than that, I don’t put on much anything. I mean, maybe some lip gloss or chapstick when I think about it (which is about twice a week), and maybe a bit of blush for any classical music concerts, but yeah, that’s it. I don’t bother most of the time.
I’m really into fragrances, though. I mean, not those strong ones that old people use that make you choke. I like the french L’Occitaine sprays, especially the green tea one, because it’s so light and everyone who hugs me likes it.

We’re talking about makeup? *scandalized* I don’t wear it. I own lip gloss and lipstick, both very pink and very pretty, which I never wear. Once or twice I got it done by someone else, the first time professionally for a fashion show (age eleven) and the second time by someone who worked at the makeup counter at Macy’s (age thirteen).

I wear lip gloss/chapstick, but mostly because my lips get really dry without it. Otherwise, just stage makeup, which is incredibly fun. One of my favorite uses of eyeliner is to draw mustaches on my sister’s face, (because she wanted to look like Will Turner from POTC) if that tells anything about my makeup-appreciation.

Makeup…The only time — literally the ONLY time — I have ever put on makeup is when I put some on to look like a genie for halloween. =) That was funnnn…. And it looked pretty. But my mom doesn’t wear makeup, so as far as I know there’s none in the house. And while I might eventually wear mascara or something if I ever felt like I needed it, that’s the only thing I think I would ever feel like I should wear. Hopefully. And right now I don’t actually think I “need” makeup. Not to be egotistical, more to be self-esteemful. Hope you guys see the difference.

I don’t wear the stuff. My mom doesn’t use it either, so I have no acsess to it, nor would I know what to do with it if I did. A few times my friend Katie and I have gotten our hands on some and just fooled around with it, like the time she put mascara on her eyebrow and it got all black and bushy looking then wouldn’t ash out…..good times, good times…..
Then my friend Danielle who always wears makeup now and then decides that she’s going to give me a makeover and gets out the crling irons, hairspray, makeup, etc. and attacks me. One time she did the whole thing, and I looked okay, but m=not myself. My hair was so laquered with hairspray that it was stif, but it still wouldn’t hold a curl!
When I was 11 I wanted to run away with the circus, so I learned about clown makeup and did that a few times. I settled for an aguste face, if anyone cares. But I doubt that’s entirely on topic…

Oh well, my attempt at changing the subject to dogs was fruitless.
Did you know they took a big survey and 90 something % of boys prefer girls who wear makeup? I’m not basing my decision to wear it off of that, just stating a fact. And this may sound like a lame excuse but I live in the south, in a very small town and EVERYONE wears makup. I mean girls usually start in fifth grade so I was a little late in wearing by those standards.
I just put on a small amount of mascara, blush (i’m super pale) and sheer gloss. Its all natural stuff too.

I could never do my whole face every day for school.
Makeup is something I do when I’m bored and don’t know what else to do.
I like looking nice but it’s not worth the effort most of the time, and I look fine how I normally am.
I dye my hair a lot because I like changing the color of it every few months.
Ooh! This reminds me of a story. If you are meeting your friend’s parents for the first time and it is Halloween and you are dressing as a prom zombie, do not stay in character. I did this recently and now my friend’s mom think’s I’m a stuck up brat who thinks I’m more popular than everyone. I thought it was pretty clear that I was being sarcastic, but either her mom is too gullible, or I’m a better actor than I thought I was.

i never leave the house without at least mascara. if im not in school, i wear eyeliner, but thats it, because my cheeks naturally look like they have blush on them. A couple of times, people have comented that i have put on too much blush, and it is ALOT of fun to tell them that it is natural, and if they don’t like it, they need to get a life. I dont need makeup though – i have the kind of face that makes it look like im wearing makeup when im not, so it makes my mornings alot faster. Also if I’m wearing makeup, i look alot older, and it attracts TOO much attention, and it can be awkward at times.

I only wear lip gloss and stage make-up. I got a lot of funny looks when I came to school wearing make-up yesterday for our performance of Annie so that I wouldn’t be attacked by our make-up “artists”. How exactly is makeup a discussion topic? I mean, I wear the stuff, but no one here is debating the relative merits of department store vs. Walgreens.
Actually, I don’t wear makeup all that often offstage. (As an aside, my makeup for the last show I was in was so tacky it came out on the other side and actually looked pretty awesome.) Mostly it’s just for when I want to look particularly nice, and even then I go more for subtle–just mascara and gloss usually.
I do, however, love nail polish. Speaking of which, I really need to replenish my stock.

I only wear make-up sparingly and never day to day. I just don’ see the need, and I’m horrified of putting too much on, or of it being too obvious that I’m wearing it. The most make-up I wear is lip-gloss if that counts. I only ever wear much more than that onstage. and grudgingly.

199- I think drugstore makeup can work just as well as department store stuff. I’ve never bought any at walgreens but Target is good. I wear about as much as you do. I love polish too. N.Y.C color makes the best colors in my opinion.
I wonder how wearing nail polish even started. Nails are just there to protect nerves, but I guess one day someone just said “Hey, lets paint these hard little things at the end of our fingers/toes!”
I guess it is just one of lifes great mysteries.

The only video game I have ever played is DDR. If that even counts as a video game. And it was only twice, at the house of a family friend. Oh, yeah, and I also watched Kingdom Hearts being played at the same family’s house. That was interesting. We don’t own any kind of game console. I don’t really see the appeal of video games very much. I have a long rant about video games, but I don’t think I’ll go into it right now.

Nail polish: I used to love it, and I still have three bottles of the stuff, but I haven’t used it in ages. Years perhaps, I don’t really pay much attention. For the reasons that (1) it takes too much time to dry-time in which I could be doing something else. (2) It smells horrid when wet and is probably not that great to be breathing. (3) Hot pink (or purple or sparkily) fingernails look really strange with full colonial dress. (Though it would match that one pair of stockings I have…) (4) The aforementioned problem would e less severe if I had nail polish remover, but I don’t. This is probably the worst problem that I have with it.
All that said, I now feel like going and painting my nails…..argh, the power of suggestion.

Video games, huh? Well, the closest I ever got was the ancent GameBoy that my cousin gave me. I don’t even know where the thing is now, but it was one of the really old ones, not even in color! I had two games, and I stank at both.
The best thing about arcades is air hockey. Now that’s something that I can do with reasonable skill.

Makeup: I am allergic to most of it. I only wear it for special events like the attending of a wedding.
Video games: The parental units think they’re trash. I have played video games a few times at friends’ houses, and usually my method is to press all the buttons until my character dies so someone else can have a turn. They don’t interest me much.
But computer games! There you have me. Especially Harry Potter computer games. I sincerely believe that my brother and I have explored HP 1 and 2 to their limit. We got the first one when I was nine, I believe, and for years afterwards, I dreamed that I was playing the game or a character in the game.
We have 3, 4 and 5 too, but haven’t played those as much. I like 3, but miss being able to cast spells while running. HP4 is too much like a video game. HP5 is rather boring–the physics are realistic, but the controls are AWFUL and there are no magical beasts to combat or secret places to explore. Does anyone share my sentiments?

Folks, you have your video games thread here. Don’t try to change the topic so you have two threads about something, or I’ll ask for the topic to be Zemtee! Now, that wouldn’t be fair either, I hope you understand. But please use the assigned thread for the games discussion…
I come back to speak of the makeup: When I say makeup here, I mean that in a vague sense, and I’m sure you know of more precise terms for different things. But I mean makeup as anything, even hair dyes, lipstick, eyelash gunk, nail polish… anything you apply to yourself to change your appearance.
If you really just want to wear the stuff because you like it, okay. That’s your choice, whatever. But. Do NOT wear it to get attention from boys. Whatever you think of yourself, nice boys won’t care about it and might even find some of it weird. And it could make you look bad when you may already be naturally beautiful. You may not think it is true, but it is the case. If you wait for somebody nice, you won’t need to wear makeup. Makeup will only get our attention in a “what happened? Why did she decide to wear that?!” sort of way, not in a way that will make us like you more. So please don’t.
Please note: If you are a girl and you are not attracted to boys, this notice does not apply to you and I realize that. There is no need to post complaining I am assuming you are attracted to guys.

219- ‘Nice’? Sorry, but I actually like makeup. It’s just when it’s used in excess or when it’s especially not needed is when I dislike it. Also, you say that it ‘could make you look bad when you may already be naturally beautiful’. If it could make you look bad, it also could make you look better, right? Also, you refer to guys as ‘we’. Not all guys share your opinion. And I’m not trying to be mean or anything, I’m just trying to say that there are other opinons as well. If I say, “Why did she wear that?!?” then it’s probably cuz she put on a pound of the stuff and made herself look like a hooker. Sorry, but I found the term ‘nice boys’ kind of offensive. I don’t think of myself as not nice, and I think that it’s a generalization that ‘nice guys’ don’t like makeup at all. This is just my opinion, though, I don’t know how other male MBers feel about it.
216- Technically, computer games are video games. I think you’re thinking of games on a console, like Xbox 360, Wii or something like that. Games on the computer are largely the same, though.
217- Do you mean like what the game’s about? It’s like a rhythm game that you play with a plastic guitar. Or why it’s so popular? It’s really addicting, and that’s why I think it’s so popular.

Oh, Andrew… *Sigh* Of coouuurrrssseee you’re a nice guy, I don’t think it’s possible for a Muser to be otherwise…
I think I’ve been around long enough for people to realize I often don’t make myself completely clear. Although this isn’t great, I really hope people will eventually realize what I’m saying is carefully woven into the post, and may be difficult to understand right away. This is a great example of this. If I can explain it more clearly, you will realize what you’re saying doesn’t have to go against what I’m saying, it really doesn’t.
What I’m saying is girls should not wear makeup exclusively to attract attention from guys. It seems to be tradition around here for most of the girls to dye their hair blond (it often looks like they all used the same color 
) and to wear very minimal clothing. This is extremely bad and I’m sure you can agree with that. Also, it is true, even if you like makeup Andrew, that it is not essential for girls to wear it to have boys like them. And whether some makeup MIGHT make you more beautiful is a matter of taste, but I can’t believe you don’t think it possible to be beautiful without makeup.
My point is nice boys (Andrew included here) won’t mind if you don’t wear makeup, even if they don’t mind some makeup. Does that make more sense? Even if you find makeup can make girls more attractive, you don’t mind when girls don’t wear makeup, true? And of course, this is a small part of why nice guys are attracted to girls, a lot is who you are, which makeup usually doesn’t change. And Andrew, please don’t get excited, all nice guys DO find personality the most important part of a relationship, looks are nice, but you can’t just depend on that to like someone.
I’m leaving before I confuse you more!

conciously or not, when you apply make-up you’re making a statement about the sort of person you are and the values you hold. you are choosing to use you dollar opwer to support a shallow industry largley founded upon inhumane practices. in addition, you’re trying to ge the wolrd to like you for a entirley superficial characteristic: your apperance, and consequently de-valuing youself in your own eyes. you are saying “my personality, thought, intelligence and spirits are not my most noteworthy or important attributes. the parts of myslef that are most unique aren’t worth being displayed, so instead, here is my shallow little avatar.
please girls, love yoursleves more than that.

224-YES! This is what I’m trying to say. Nice guys will be able to fall in love with girls who don’t use makeup. Period. Andrew, I repeat, maybe you do think makeup can make a girl more attractive to you, but if you wouldn’t be able to fall in love with someone who didn’t use makeup because you thought they should have, well… That’s not a nice guy. So I hope you’re not like that. I’m not trying to criticize you or assume what you’re doing or how you feel. But a ways up on this thread someone said 90 some % of boys prefer girls who wear makeup. I believe the nice boys occupy the 10% remaining. You may think makeup looks good, but you don’t shallowly base your decisions by if someone is wearing makeup.

Kokonilly, do you have a better place for this? The romance thread? Because this isn’t girly anymore, this is a discussion of whether nice boys can fall in love with someone even if they don’t wear makeup, no matter what your taste is… And are you a girl? Or a boy? I’ve given up on guessing even if I am almost certainly right, somebody always ends up getting mad. What do you think about this, either way?

222, second to last paragraph, last line- I do think it’s possible, and in most cases, I believe it’s true. And I absolutely do not mind if girls do not wear makeup. And I don’t think I have a preference towards girls who do wear makeup, or girls who don’t. Nor do I have a problem with either case, except in girls who wear too much.
226- Don’t worry, it did, and I understand what you mean now. Yeah, I agree, if you don’t like someone based solely on the fact that they don’t, or should, wear makeup, (but would otherwise like them) I don’t want to be friends with you. Or even know you, for that matter. I really don’t want to associate myself with that kind of shallow trash.

Reason 1: he is Canadian
