THREADS CLOSING EARLY TONIGHT

Your hard-partying Administrators will be offline for most of the evening, so the December Random Thread and “Welcome, Newcomers!” thread will be disappearing around 6:45 p.m., Museblog time. Replacements will appear a couple of minutes after midnight. Until then, we suppose you can use this announcement as a temporary random thread, in a pinch.

See you next year (and decade)!

Happy Winter*, Everybody!

The winter solstice occurs on December 21 at 2338 Universal Time. That’s 5:38 p.m. MuseBlog time (U.S. Central Standard Time), or 11:38 p.m. Icelandic time.

*Or summer, for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere.

Science Magazine’s Breakthrough of the Year

By popular request (well, one request, anyway).

You can read all about the Breakthrough of the Year (and accompanying “Insights of the Decade” section) at Science‘s home page.

NOTE: Robert was neck-deep in all of this. Yes, like the other Administrators, he does have a job other than moderating MuseBlog.

Muse Academy Holiday Party 2010 — Gift Tree

Place your presents under or on the gift tree for the Gift Exchange.

Note: this thread is only for posting gifts. All other comments or discussion should be on the Holiday Party thread. When it’s time to reveal the contents, they will be posted here as well.

Describe the outside appearance of your gift. (Wrapping paper, size, general shape, what it sounds like when shaken…however you’d like to describe it.)

Suggestion: make sure you keep track of your gift and its description, so you don’t risk forgetting what you gave.

Muse TV

KaiYves’s description:

Maybe we should have a Muse TV thread, where we write a “TV Guide” listing for an imaginary Muse TV channel. There would be news reports covering Kokons and goings-on in Kokonino County, documentaries about things Muse has done articles about, serialized episodes based on events in the various RPGs, and in the commercial breaks, campaign ads for Koko, advertising for MA, the H&H, and the Emporium, and Army-style recruiting ads for fighting against the HPBs.

Something Wonderful

Robert writes:

Our friend Pollyhymnia sent me a link to this YouTube video, which made my day. I’ve often doodled in math class, but never this productively:

Chicago Kokon Possibility?

Muse‘s editor, Elizabeth Preston, sends this announcement:

I wonder if this might be a good event to post on MuseBlog, for any Chicago-area readers. We’re having a Holiday Magazine Fair next Saturday (December 11) from 2-4 at the Chicago Cultural Center. All the Cricket Magazine Group magazines will be represented. There will be science and writing activities and artist demos, plus free hot chocolate, brownies, and magazines to take home. Our editors, art directors, and designers will be hosting the event—we’ll be easily recognizable by our festive bug antennae!

You can find out more about it here.

Muse Academy Holiday Party — Planning Thread

The weather is bleak this time of year off the coast of Iceland, but as end of term approaches, Muse Academy students and faculty alike have one thing to look forward to: the annual Holiday Party and accompanying Gift Tree. Although less spectacular than the balls the Academy holds on May Day and Halloween, it’s delightful in its own spicy, coniferous way.

(For reference, here’s how the party and the tree unfolded last year.)
