What’s Going On

It’s like this:

Previous April Fools’ Day celebrations on the blog consisted of pretend-takeovers by various nefarious entities. MBers were getting tired of that (last year, some of you were so uncomfortable with Victorian diction that you clammed up entirely), so this year we decided we’d do something simpler: We’ve found a bunch of goofy plug-ins and unleashed them on the blog. Text will appear distorted, rainbows and unicorns will appear if you don’t move your mouse every five seconds or so, and — oh, yes — there’s an Asteroids game embedded that will allow you to destroy the home page if you can find and activate it.

Silly enough for for you? If not, try a little Pac-Man:

[Sorry! We’ve taken it offline now. Maybe some other year. –Admin.]

[8:30 p.m. MuseBlog time on April 1: we’ve decided to leave the unicorns and the Asteroids game up overnight for the late-night crowd. Everything else will be restored to what passes for normal around here. Sorry, Comic Sans fans! –Admin.]

Lizzie’s Recital

Rather than moving a lot of sound files, we’re posting a link so you can hear it on Soundcloud as long as she keeps it there. Enjoy!

Staving Off February

KaiYves has asked us to repost this piece of classic MuseBlogiana. Great idea, Kai!

Back in April 2008, UberMuser Grant O. sent us some sound files of narration for a proposed slideshow about ways to survive winter. He called it “Staving Off January.”

Before we knew it, Midnight Fiddler had drawn up some storyboards, and a New Zealand MBer named Zoe (who then went by Treble_Cone_Freeskier) turned them into a real multimedia presentation.

Here it is, to help you get through the rest of the winter:

Staving Off January.

They’re not exactly pouring in, but we’ve received a couple. Herewith:

Welcome Back!

For those of you who didn’t read the meager updates on our Muse Academy emergency blog, MuseBlog was offline almost all day yesterday because our host company was having server problems. We reappeared about 10 p.m. blog time, a bit dazed and lonely but apparently none the worse for wear.

So in case anybody was wondering: no, it wasn’t you, and it wasn’t SOPA. Just a technical glitch that we probably wouldn’t understand even if somebody explained it to us v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y.

Anyway, it’s good to be back.

Anatomy of a Random Thread Graphic

The other day Castle made the mistake of asking inquired about the construction of the Uranuary Random Thread graphic. Since I couldn’t think of a short answer and because everyone else runs and hides when I talk about this stuff and there was the chance that some explanation might be useful to those MuseBloggers who do graphics, I thought I’d try this method of providing a few details. Click on the image below to see the large version.

Let me know if this is useful or if anything is unclear.

Revamping the HG2MB

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to MuseBlog hasn’t been revised in ages and could use an overhaul. Any help will be much appreciated.

Concerning “Voldynet”

As most of you know, one of the fundamental principles of MuseBlog is the GAPAs’ insistence on pretending that the rest of the Internet does not exist. We do this for two reasons:

  1. We see MuseBlog as an island of civility in a generally barbaric Internet. We’re not fond of the way online culture has developed so far, and, frankly, we think we do it better here.
  2. We don’t want MBers or their parents to think that we’re here to make it easy for them to connect with one another on other websites. We’re not, for reasons including but not limited to those listed in item 1.

Toward these ends, we strongly discourage references to activities on other websites and Internet services, particularly popular ones like Facebook. Just to make things easier for ourselves, we’ve even added the word “Facebook” to our spam filter’s standard “zap list” of obscenities and insults.

As a joke, MBers started referring to Facebook as “Voldynet” — i.e., the Voldemort Network, That Which Must Not Be Named. Some even seemed to think that it was all right to post comments about their Facebook activity as long as they called Facebook Voldynet.

So, to clarify: it isn’t. We still don’t allow any references that might help MB readers (who include a fair number of Mysterious Lurkers along with the regular MBers we know and love) to find you elsewhere on the Internet. That might seem unreasonable and even quaint, but several younger MBers have told us that our stubborn insistence on that rule is the only reason their parents let them post here.

On the other hand, that doesn’t mean you can’t talk about Facebook (etc.) at all. It’s part of your world, after all. So you can talk about it, if you’re careful. For example, it’s allowable to say “My friend got in trouble after her parents read some incriminating posts on her Facebook page.” But it’s not allowable to say, “Hey, everybody, go to my Facebook page right away and see the cool link I’ve posted there.” Got it? In between those extremes, of course, are a lot of gray areas, but we’re sure you’re smart enough to negotiate them as long as you remember the spirit of the rule and the reasons it’s in place.

If you understand all of that and still decide to post a comment violating the spirit of the rule, we (abetted by our trusty spam filter) will zap it — and talking about Voldynet won’t help.

Yr. obt. svts,

The dictatorial but ultimately well-meaning

Chess: MuseBlog vs. MuseBlog, Game 2, 1-0

Game 1 is over. Guess what: MuseBlog won. Congratulations, MuseBlog! Also, condolences, MuseBlog. Better luck next time.

So here we go again. As before, anybody can make a move at any time. You don’t have to restrict yourself to playing one color, but please don’t make more than one move in a row. The game will be over too quickly if people just use it to play themselves.

Attention, MuseBloggers!

The September threads have been posted early tonight, and the August threads have been closed. We hope this doesn’t inconvenience anyone; it seems like a slow night on the blog, and the GAPA on duty wants to go to bed. Sleep is for the wise!

I Saved Alternate-History Threads

As KaiYves describes it, this started with an idea for a story called “I Saved the Titanic.” Then she thought “I Saved Pompeii,” “I Saved Apollo 1,” and several other things worth saving. Then she thought, “Why not make this a thread?” So we did.
