Evolution, v. 2007.2

Several MBers say they’d like to discuss evolutionary ideas about the history of life and how organisms have changed over time. That’s what this thread is for.

No heckling, please; let’s try to keep things peaceful this time. Also, please avoid off-topic posts. If you want to talk about topics that evolution does not cover, such as the Big Bang theory, the origin of life, or supernatural ideas beyond the reach of science, please go to the Origins and Beginnings thread.

Washington, D.C., Kokonvention — Part 2

Kokontinued above.

The GAPAs have been conferring amongst themselves. In typically all-embracing GAPA style, we’ve decided to hold two Kokonventions: a big one on August 15, and a smaller one on August 10 for those who can’t make the other one.

We’re still working on a program of events for each. Right now, the main difference is the August 10 will have three GAPAs present (Rosanne, Robert, and Rebecca), whereas August 15 will have just two (no Rosanne, alas).

So… roll call, please. Who’s still interested?

Ships’ Logs: Beyond Museica, Part 7

Oh, who can tell, save he whose heart hath tried,
And danced in triumph o’er the waters wide,
The exulting sense – the pulse’s maddening play,
That thrills the wanderer of that trackless way?
That for itself can woo the approaching fight,
And turn what some deem danger to delight….

— George Gordon, Lord Byron, after six threads worth of Ships’ Logs, as overcome as the rest of us

Continued from part 6.

O’er the glad waters of the dark blue sea,
Our thoughts as boundless, and our soul’s as free
Far as the breeze can bear, the billows foam,
Survey our empire, and behold our home!
These are our realms, no limits to their sway-
Our flag the sceptre all who meet obey.
Ours the wild life in tumult still to range
From toil to rest, and joy in every change.
Oh, who can tell? not thou, luxurious slave!
Whose soul would sicken o’er the heaving wave;
Not thou, vain lord of wantonness and ease!
whom slumber soothes not – pleasure cannot please –
Oh, who can tell, save he whose heart hath tried,
And danced in triumph o’er the waters wide,
The exulting sense – the pulse’s maddening play,
That thrills the wanderer of that trackless way?
That for itself can woo the approaching fight,
And turn what some deem danger to delight….

Role-Playing Writing, Part 1

Alice’s idea, sort of a cross between RRRs and RPGs with a touch of epistolary novel. Here’s how she described it:

Everyone makes up one character (made up, mind you!) and we decide on plot, time, etc. just like usual. Then we start. It would be in the form of letters or e-mails, and we would say at the top of our post who the letter was to.

Everyone would have to read all of the posts, though, to prevent conflicting plot twists, but their character wouldn’t know about whatever the letter said unless it was addressed to them.

Get it?
If not, then phooey. That was hard to explain.

Green Man and Pink Bunny

Two pictures from Em, both below the fold.

Em’s description:

I was going to send these awhile ago, but I never got around to it. The
first picture is from my trip to Germany, and there is a rather lengthy
story behind it.

*Ahem*

Long Long ago, when you weren’t even born, and we had to walk 2 miles
every day in the snow just to get to school,(Where did we live, anyway,
Alaska?) a lovely person named Paul Baker (You may have heard of him)
wrote an article for Muse Magazine on the subject of those lovely little
carvings in cathedrals on the roof bosses and miserychords and such. When
Em went to France and Germany this past winter holiday, she entered many a
cathedral and church, these being the major points of culture in Europe.
(Aside from beer and outdoor cafes, of course) Keeping in mind the afore
mentioned article, she spent most of her time staring at the ceiling.
(Tourists don’t really have enough time to request special tours of the
choir lofts) Finally, in Germany, (The people in Paris had much better
taste than this) she came across several green men (see aforementioned
article) and took some photos of them.

Yes, it is quite a lovely story, Isn’t it? The second picture is my
much-improved Hpb pic (You may remember the first one) and I threw it in
simply for kicks. Please show the lovely Green man to the MBers!
Otherwise, what was the point of me spending so long looking for it?
(Okay, so I had to go in the churches anyway)

Robert Writes a Book Review

We’re not sure whether anyone on the blog gets the New York Times, but there was a Muse connection in last Sunday’s book-review section. You can see it here.

And speaking of reviews, did anyone see Pollyhymnia’s review of the upcoming Nancy Drew movie?

(Pollyhymnia, a.k.a. Polly Shulman, is a Y.A. writer and reviewer who pops up on MuseBlog occasionally. We’ve had a series of threads about her novel, Enthusiasm.)
